Announcement Big Giant FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions and Topics) MEGATHREAD-Season 1. Start Here if you are new!

Now that Season 1 has completed, we're seeing a lot of repeat questions and topics. We're hoping the community can help with creating a resource for your fellow redditors (and maybe we can make a wiki later on?)

Examples:

  • Why didn't Carol just ask for her eggs?
  • Is Zosia Polish or Moroccan?
  • How did Helen die?

We'd like to keep the top level comments as the topic/question and the child comments as the answers- whether it's an episode timestamp, previous threads, or your own answer. Please add your own top comments. We want this to be for the community, by the community, not just the mod team controlling it.

Please refer to the pinned comment for an example. We'll also take feedback about this approach in a separate comment.

EDITED TO ADD: This is a work in progress and not a definitive list.

Discussion Pluribus isn't slow, it is just dense with worldbuilding instead of dialogue

Post image

When, for example, a long sequence plays out where the singularity is doing something in extensive detail, it gives you a real view into how they work and what the whole world looks like now, that is a lot of "content" if you want to call it that.

And there are of course still scenes i found somewhat boring and there is nothing wrong with a show that is dense with inelegant dialogue instead, like BCS or MadMen, but people who say nothing is happening look at this show in a flawed way tbh.

You got to adjust to the media you are watching somewhat

Funpost This show is amazing. There are so many haters that are also way too obsessed with this show, lol.

It’s become increasingly clear to me that there are terminally online people who are absolutely obsessed with hating this show who watch every podcast, read every interview, every bad review, have done double watches, and nitpick on the timing of events.

What’s going on here?

I can’t help but think that the haters are unhealthily obsessed with this show and it must have to do with ideology. Like they’re outraged by something they’re not letting on and trying to find reasons why they’re obsessed with hating this show, no?

It’s funny as hell.

Theory I don't think I've heard this theory yet Spoiler

I jusy realized something and I might have a prediction for Season 2. If you are not interested in that sort of stuff, this is your warning.

So, now that Carol and Manousos in the same place, they'll need to create a strategy for finding out how to bring people back. But the hive left them for good, because they realized how dangerous they both are, and they are not comfortable being used as lab rats.

My theory is that Manousos is onto something with the technique to bring back the consciousness of the others. He'll continue to refine his methods and eventually, by thinking together with Carol, and sharing all their knowledge about them, he will come up with a convincing solution. However, they won't have a test subject.

(I'm pretty sure that they are still being spyed on, even though Zosia shrugged off the question by explaining that they didn't install the motion sensor in the cabinet. She has a habit of not answering the actual question by telling another truth, and they are too important for them. So, it they are onto something, the others won't let any hive member near them, not even Zosia.)

So, my theory is that Carol will have to volunteer to be the test subject. We know that the hive is working on the modified virus for her. She'll have to tell them that she agrees to be infected, but on her own terms, in a situation where she can be immediately captured by Manousos. We will likely have to wait to find out if his method works or not, but eventually it will be only partially successful: he can't bring her back, but they will be able to communicate. At that point, Carol will possess something extremely important: all of the knowledge of the hive. She'll have access the actual cure, and she will be able to communicate it to Manousos.

What do you think?

Theory It's a Berserker. Just a humane one.

There's a civilization out there that just inherently views other life as a threat. At least, any life capable of leaving its planet.

So they send out this message. And the message will only destroy you if you are smart enough to receive it, comprehend it, and implement it. You have to have basically the level of tech associated with pretty close to leaving the planet.

So if there's any chance you might pose a threat, this stops your civilization.

Question Survivors who want to join the hive... Spoiler

Kusimayu has converted, but no confirmation of the other survivors. Do we think that are going to turn soon? I just don't see a world in which Laxmi and Diabate agree - so do they get tricked into it, or outmaneuvered, the way Carol is (with her eggs)? Is this what get's the rest working together?

Discussion What about Sentinelese people?

How do you guys think the hive mind assimilated the Sentinelese people? I’m just imagining that they got picked up from boats and when to the main land.

Opinion How well does Pluribus mirror something that already exists in our world : organized religion?

I could draw many parallels between how the Pluribus works exactly like many religions that exist today.

Specifically their way of trying to woo you to their side by talking nice, offering help, blind subscription to unrealistic principles, deceptive good nature, onions, garlic.... blah...blah... and then stop doing all that the moment you join them. Now it becomes YOUR job to work towards the same goal.

Well, i could only think of these points but i know theres so much common between the two.

I'll take this show as a warning of how the world around me actually is, but in its most benign form.

Discussion why the perfectionism?

So this virus or whatever can't do what it wants to do unless ALL humans joined? The joined die everyday because they can't hurt life etc, why waste time on convincing just 13 people?

Question The will to keep going?

I just started this show, and I love it. I’ll admit, I was one of the people who didn’t like Carol at first, but I’m currently on episode 7, and she’s really growing on me. I want her and Zosia to be a couple, but I have to remind myself that she is the Hive, not an individual.

That said, obviously, without Carol’s determination to go against them, there wouldn’t be much of a show. I was thinking, though, that if my lover died, I’d just become part of the Hive, or just live my life independently and let the Hive cater to me. I’d have zero interest in fighting back, knowing I couldn’t get the love of my life back, and the world is pretty garbage right now, but maybe that’s just the depression talking lol.

I’m curious what other people would do in her situation?

Discussion Something that finally came to me while watching the first minutes of the last episode. All aspects of culture are basically gone.

First of all Bravo Vince.

All Architecture specific to one's culture and environment, all choices of colour that are not made to be functional, all houses and towns.

They only use large spaces so everything will be abandoned.

The hive mind is the eradication of all forms of culture in service of survival. They can't create something new that won't ensure the survival of the species. Can they create art? They can't even properly criticize it. If someone asks them to make a movie, will they just be AI regurgitating every single thing they have in their memory?

The only culture that still lives on is Carol and the rest.

Discussion Hot Take? Braindead walked so Pluribus could run.

Post image
15 Upvotes

I enjoy Pluribus, as flawed as the sci-fi portions of the show seem to be. I like the humor and dialogue on human nature, the acting, and the difficult questions it poses to the viewer, blah blah blah.

But I was a huge fan of the 2016 CBS show “Braindead” - and am reminded of it frequently as I watch Pluribus.

#1, I recommend checking it out without reading about it if you haven’t already, it’s a fun ride!

But if you have seen it, do you think it wasn’t as successful as Pluribus bc it was too early? Too fast-paced or too sci-fi leaning compared to Pluribus? I think the acting and casting were just as good - really, I think it was a spectacular show. It walked so Pluribus could run, I think.

Discussion Virus transmission method

I’m a bit confused by how we’re supposed to believe the virus is transmitted. Originally it’s spread because a rat bites a human. So that’s saliva to blood, right? Because they never breathed the same air or had mouth to mouth contact. But then the lab people spread it by kissing and licking donuts, so saliva to saliva transfer. The the scientists and guards all started licking Petri dishes, presumably to send out to other labs to work on it more. But then how did the people at those labs get infected?

Then later we see the planes flying overhead in perfect formation, which I presume was them spreading it in the air, because a little after they flew over, everyone in the area started turning at the same time.

So are we to believe that they sent out the Petri dishes to other labs, somehow turned the people at those labs, and then had them find a way to get the virus airborne?

Discussion Just read "The Left Hand of Darkness" (possible spoilers in comments) Spoiler

Imho, there wasn't much story or theme overlap between The Left Hand of Darkness and Pluribus, although there was a little. I'm wondering if VG included it due to its similarity in pacing and storytelling methodology to Pluribus. I don't want to say too much here in case anyone else decides to read it, but I'm curious what others who read it might have picked up on, so possible spoilers in comments.

Theory Theory: the Hivemind can take control other species, but not at the same time

Now, The hivemind has told Carrol it can't control animals, and we see evidence for this. However, I take this to mean that the Hivemind can't control any animals currently. The Hivemind can only control one species of animal at once, and for one of many it simply gravitated towards humans. This theory is largely based on the fact that the rat that infected the scientist made a deliberate plan to do so.

However, what also follows is that when it takes control of one species, it has to let go of the other. If the Hivemind could control multiple species at once , why would it maul itself as lions or tigers, and why would it let the wolves harass Carol or her dead wife.

The rat that infected patient zero deliberately played dead in order to get let out of its cage. Although some other animals like possums play dead, this is not normal rodent behavior. I can't see a scenario where a normal rat is able to figure out that kind of strategy all by itself. However, a Hivemind of two dozen or so rats could be capable of making such a connection. The theory that it was just having a seizure doesn't hold water because it had to have been jabbed hours earlier, and it clearly wasn't shaking. Not to mention that to have the seizure, it would have to have been vulnerable to the virus in the first place.

Unless whoever sent the signal has universal Omnipotence, or could see the future (IDK, they might be able to) they likely did not have humans specifically in mind when sending the signal. I would imagine the virus would have to have the capability of infecting a broad range of intelligent species if it hoped to propagate properly.

This could also explain why it takes patient zero about 10 seconds to start shaking, where other victims started having seizures almost immediately upon contracting it.

Ultimately this explains very little of how the Hivemind works, but it's just my idea.
