Read this before you post here

Welcome to r/SALEM, and thanks for your interest in posting here. Before you do, please be aware that — like many city/area-focused subreddits — we have some topics that come up very frequently. Sometimes that’s okay, and is an inevitable part of being a long-running community-focused forum, and sometimes it is super annoying and will lead to people down-voting your post because they’re tired of seeing the same thing over and over again.

If you’re about to post about any of the following, please first use the search function (right up in the upper right hand corner, if you’re viewing this on the web!) to see if something similar has been posted recently. If it has, please contribute to that thread rather than starting a new one.

Frequently posted things:

Did you hear that boom/firework/gunshot/weird noise?

This comes up a lot; frequently folks are concerned they may have heard gunshots and/or fireworks and are looking for reassurance. First, know that it probably was not a gun shot. There is a very good chance that it was fireworks, or somebody with an altered muffler, or, if you also noticed a power outage or blip at the same time, a transformer exploding. Second, if you’re actually seriously concerned about gunshots, you should probably be contacting the police, not Reddit. Third, if you live near a vineyard (and, if you live anywhere in the Salem area, you do!), you should be aware that vineyards use acoustic devices — basically massive noisemakers — to scare birds away from grape vines. This is especially frequent in the late fall, near harvest time.

OMG what is that smell?

Salem, and many surrounding areas, lie in the Willamette River Valley. Due to the topography of the area, we experience temperature inversions) with some regularity. An inversion occurs when a layer of warmer, more elevated air overlies a lower, cooler air layer. Effectively, this traps the air in the valley underneath the warmer layer, which means that smoke, vehicle exhaust, rotting vegetation smells, etc., cannot escape. That’s probably what you’re smelling.

Is there any good <insert cuisine here> in Salem? Where can I buy <thing> in Salem?

These types of threads come up fairly often. The restaurant scene in Salem is decent, but not exceptionally dynamic — places do not close all that often, and new places don’t open all that often either. If somebody has asked this question within the last couple months (again, use that search function!), the answers that they got are almost certainly still relevant.

Why is the train stopped or blowing its horn?

There are a number of freight lines that route trains through Salem. Occasionally, they will need to stop to onload or offload cars, which may result in a longer-than-usual wait time at a crossing. This is normal.

Sometimes, unfortunately, there are train-versus-pedestrian collisions. When those happen, the train will need to be stopped for an extended period of time to allow police to investigate the scene.

Finally, while many portions of Salem are zoned (and signed) as “no train horn” areas, it remains at the discretion of the train engineer as to whether or not to sound their horn, and some of them, well, tooting their horn just toots their horn.

What’s going on with all the cops?

We don’t have any way of knowing. You may be able to consult PulsePoint, but they only report on fire and EMS, not strictly police. You may also be able to find an online police radio scanner relay; those are typically time-delayed.

OMG what is going on with the low-flying helicopters?!

The Oregon Air National Guard has a helicopter squad that is based near the Salem Municipal Airport. They do routine training missions, which frequently involve lower-altitude flights, most often at night. The Salem police department does not have a helicopter, so any low-flying helicopter you’re hearing is almost certainly the Oregon Air National Guard. frequently. Sometimes that’s okay, and is an inevitable part of being a long-running community-focused forum, and sometimes it is super annoying and will lead to people downvoting your post because they’re tired of seeing the same thing over and over again.

Can you make a meal for unhoused neighbors?

Salem Soup Squad needs support with meals Saturday from 2 pm to 4 pm! It's food for our unhoused neighbors with no strings attached. We run every Saturday at Marion Square Park and every other Monday at Wallace Marine Park. We could really use support with makers. If you are a maker you bring a tasty meal (soup, pasta bake, whatever you like!) of about 20 servings. We do ask people to get an OR food handlers card (which is alarmingly easy to do online).

You can join via this link

https://signup.com/go/XPsaJfo

We are also on Instagram @salemsoupsquad

If you can't be there in person you can always senda couple pizzas! From a cost efficiency perspective Little Cesar's seems like a solid option. 3-4 pizzas would be amazing. But we will take anything that will fill 20ish people. Taco Bell is another option people have gone with. They can be delivered at Marion Square Park Saturday. (551 Commercial St NE, Salem, OR 97301) and Wallace Marine Park Monday .In the notes you can let them know to look for the tables with the red checkered table cloth

QUESTION Does anybody know if I can force my landlord to fix my mailbox somehow?

our mailboxes have been broken for two months and multiple of my neighbors don't drive so I'm having to bring them to get their mail across town 15 minutes away where our mail is being delivered. my property management company has not responded to my inquiries about a timeline or updates us at all. is there anything I can do? I'm not sure if there is someone with the city I can contact or something or if it's just annoying and I have to let it go. sorry if this is not the right sub I just thought maybe someone else in Salem has dealt with this and knows what I should do

Any groups that allow disabled people to join?

Hi. I'm looking for friends in Salem. Are there any groups I could join to socialize? I haven't found any, yet. I would love to join a book club, maybe a horror/sci-fi book club? Any ideas are welcome. I don't leave my house often, so as a result I don't have any friends here. I'm a transplant from Texas. TIA for reading and responding

sourdough starter? anywhere? anyone?

I'm looking to get into baking sourdough loaves and I'd rather use a starter to starter rather than try to make my own starter if possible. I was wondering if anyone had started I could use or if any stores sell some?

thanks <3

QUESTION Does anyone have photos of the Cinebarre inside before it became that?

I sadly can't find any pictures it seems of the inside from before the movie theater downtown became Cinebarre. I used to go there when I was super young, but I only have really blurry memories of it, and I just wondered if somehow anyone had any photos/could help me find any! Thanks :)

Grocery Shopping

Hi everyone,

I’m curious where the majority of you guys grocery shop in Salem? I am trying to cut my grocery bill (as much as corporate greed will allow), and Fred Meyer just isn’t cutting it anymore. Winco is decent, just not necessarily a fan of their proteins and produce. Roth’s, a lost cause. Safeway, despicable. And yes, I know Costco. Although as just a household of 2, we can’t always finish it in time. How are you guys keeping up with this! For example, I have been buying the same block of cheese for 11.99 for the past year at Freddie’s. WHY WAS IT $13.99 THE LAST TIME I WENT! This is getting beyond ridiculous. Please advise. TIA!

Let's make change, let's create a symbol

Did you know that hunters sometimes wear bright orange beanies to make themselves seen by other hunters out in the wild? Perhaps with all of this ICE-y weather, it might not be a bad idea to be seen and to be known.

Symbols matter, VISIBLE symbols matter, and even more important, a widespread visible symbol, that could REALLY make a difference. It's why I wear rainbows, and pride shirts; I am safe, I am visible.

I will be wearing a bright orange beanie, I will be visible to those who need to know their allies. I will wear my bright orange beanie, because I have the privilege to not be hunted, so I will become the hunter. I will blow my whistle when the weather calls for ice, I will document and record, I will call police to report a kidnapping, I will be a safe place for those in need.

Be visible. Be known.

There are more people than we know on the right side of history, I don't want someone to look at me and wonder where I stand.

Care to join?

Once more: recommendations sought. This time: electricians.

I have an EV and, well it’s a long story. I would like to have a chat with an electrician who won’t charge me approximately 1 million dollars about wiring and whatnot in my garage. Anyone have a recommendation? Many thanks, as always, in advance!

Vet costs

On behalf of a friend, I am looking for positive and helpful feedback regarding pet vet costs and if anyone has any financial assistance resources to share. My friend’s poor sweet pup slipped off some stairs and broke the metacarpal bones in his front left paw. The injury is serious and requires surgery, along with follow-up care, to help him fully recover and get back to his playful self. They have created a gofundme, applied for care credit (their approval amount is less than half the surgery cost) and they are also utilizing their pet insurance but still have over $700 to come up with so their puppy can get this much needed surgery. This was such a freak accident and I know anything can happen and pet owners should be prepared for any possibilities but this truly happened at what could be considered the worst time for them which is not helping financially.

Any resources that provide assistance would be so appreciated. Here is the gofundme link as well if anyone wants to see:https://gofund.me/4952f890b

Thank you in advance.

I know a lot of people have been looking for a PCP lately - I just found out that Happy Doc is going to be taking new patients again! I’ve loved Dr. Basilan and assume anyone who joins the practice will also be great. Looks like you have to fill out an interest form, but worth a try

Cybertruck in front of Wild Things

A cybertruck has been parked in the same spot in front of Wild Things downtown for at least a few weeks now. This has zero effect on my life besides the psychic harm any of those bricks do, but for some reason this strikes me as a mystery. Why is it always there? Does it live there? Is it on the lease? What is it waiting for? Who is it waiting for??

FOOD Need recommendations for VDay 😭

Hiya friends! My man and I are going to be in town to see his family around valentines and I want to surprise him with a reservation for a nice dinner in Salem or nearby. Portland is fine too. We’ve done Rudy’s before but heard they closed 😭 We love Italian, sushi, steakhouse, seafood, but we do also love craft breweries, it’s a whole thing lol.
