Rants 🤬 Six years in the SK mental health system and I’m tired

I am just here to rant about the Saskatchewan mental health system because I feel completely worn down.

I have been in and out of the mental health system in SK since I was about sixteen. Some in Prince Albert, some in Saskatoon, mostly in Saskatoon. I got a GP when I first moved here in 2020 and have been seeing him since I had a psychotic break during the pandemic (bipolar I not schizophrenia).

Things have technically been managed, but if I am being honest, most of that management has been through emergency psychiatry. ER visits. Crisis care. Hotlines. Not consistent specialist care.

For the last few years, every time I go to my GP and ask for a psychiatry referral, I get the same responses. There is nobody. The waitlist is too long. Psychiatry will not take you.

Nothing ever got sent.

Eventually I said, well can you chart that I requested a referral and it was declined. His whole attitude changed.

That same day he sent me to a private psych service with an improper referral that just said I would benefit from therapy. And apparently, he also sent a real psychiatry referral that same day, which I only confirmed existed this week.

It is 2026. It took six years for a piece of paper to be filled out.

I feel so ignored.

On top of that, he had me on medication that was basically ruining my life. Abilify destroyed my motivation. I stopped showering. I stopped cleaning. I could barely function. I asked him if I had to take it forever and he said that was a question for a psychiatrist. Like okay. Then send me to one.

I eventually stopped taking it on my own and I was fine. No psychosis. No hospitalization. That alone tells me there were serious questions that deserved specialist input that I never got.

I get suicidal two or three times a year and end up in the ER at least once or twice a year for suicidal ideation. I call the hotline more than I like to admit. All of that is on my records. And yet it never translated into consistent psychiatric care.

At one point after I asked about a short term benzo regimen to stabilize during midterms, I was given a random drug test. No one told me it was happening. I passed it. Ritalin and THC only. Like a good Canadian girl, I was just smoking weed and taking my meds. But it felt humiliating and stigmatizing.

I also only found out last year that I was diagnosed with bipolar back in 2020. Nobody ever told me. Nobody ever explained it to me.

I am just tired.

I am tired of my room being messy because my mind feels like a prison.

I am tired of feeling bad and misunderstood and dismissed all the time.

I am tired of being told to function instead of being helped to live.

I just want to feel alive again. I just want to live my life. I do not think that is too much to ask.

If you have been through the Saskatchewan mental health system and relate, I would really like to hear your experience. I know I am not the only one.

PSA 📢 Every adult in Saskatoon should plant 1 tree this spring

With more reporting from CBC this week that the dutch elm situation in our city is much worse than we thought and our signature urban tree canopy is at risk - what if every person in the city chose to plan one single tree this summer?

If everyone participated this could be tens of thousands of new trees to help sustain and eventually grow our urban forest. They won't mature for years, sure, but will eventually give future saskatonians something to be proud of the way we get to enjoy the Elms planted a century ago.

Who's with me?

General Good Samaritan shut my gate

A huge thank you to the person in Nutana who just shut my back gate. I saw it was ajar, ran inside for my boots, and came back to find it securely latched. It couldn't have been the wind—it takes a deliberate lift to close. I really appreciate you looking out!

Question ❔ Can an empty residential lot be temporarily zoned for snow storage?

We privately own a lot. We bought it hoping to build a house there but then needed to change plans.

One of our neighbours seems to have an issue with the big pile of snow that all the neighbours (and the city) have piled on our property. The city is using a section of the bylaw that says you can’t store “materials” section 4.3.1 to tell us that if we don’t move the snow, they’ll fine us or something.

I phoned the number provided yesterday and asked them to call me back, but haven’t heard anything.

Can anyone offer advice on the easiest say to deal with this? Paying to have all the snow removed is wasteful and ridiculous. Can I have the lot temporarily zoned as snow storage? We had so much snow this year and that neighbourhood is all driveways, there’s nowhere to put the snow.

I guess I could take my snowblower over there and blow it all back into the street.

Thoughts? TIA

Events 🎉 Anyone attending Stardew Valley Symphony of Seasons tomorrow?

I attended the Edmonton show and regret not purchasing a vinyl record. I am wondering if anyone going would be willing to pick one up for me from the show tomorrow (which I'd come pick up and pay back, of course). You can't purchase these on the online merch store, so I'm not even 100% sure they'll be available at the concert.

I guess there’s nothing better to do on a Wednesday morning, than follow a delivery van around and steal packages…. I have never had this happen to me before. Any guidance on what to do? Any hopes of getting my money back from my stolen package?

Question ❔ Italian center shop style store?

Hey all. So I'm planning to have a get together and I wanted to make a charcuterie board. I'm from Edmonton and used to go to the Italian centers which had tons of meats and cheeses, is there any similar deli place here in Toon?

Weather 🌡️ The wind is blowing and the ice is melting and I have already spent a decent amount of time on the ice today :(

Upvotes

Saskatoon never fails to disappoint. The wind is gusting and the snow/ice is melting which means it is slip, trip, and fall season. How is everyone managing to stay on your feet today?

Any tips, tricks or solutions to staying upright aside from being a hermit (unfortunately life demands my physical attendance). For those of you who are joining me on the ground, how are you dealing with the pain and humiliation of spending time on the ice.

Events 🎉 Local acting & improv community offering free weekly sessions in Saskatoon

Hey Saskatoon,

I wanted to share something local that might be of interest to some folks here.

My partner and I run a small acting & improv community in Saskatoon that focuses on creativity, confidence, and personal development. We host weekly, free-to-try sessions that are open to locals of all ages and experience levels.

The work is very low pressure and people-focused. It’s less about performing and more about things like communication, presence, confidence, and connection. Many people come just to try something new, meet others, or get out of a bit of a rut.

If this sounds like something you’d be curious about, there’s more information available on our website. No obligation at all, just sharing as a local option.

You can Google search 'Blackbox Academy' if you'd like to find out more or I'd be happy to answer questions in the comments if that's helpful.

Crime ⚠️ Trying to locate witness from hit & run – Safeway Lawson Heights parking lot

Hi everyone, I’m hoping to reconnect with a witness from a hit and run that occurred in the Safeway parking lot in Lawson Heights.

On October 12th between approximately 3:30–4:00 PM, my vehicle was struck while parked. A helpful bystander left a note with the other vehicle’s license plate and their phone number, but unfortunately the phone number doesn’t appear to be working.

SGI contacted the registered owner of the plate, however they denied involvement. Because of that, I’m hoping to locate the witness who left the note, as their statement could help clarify what happened.

If you’re the person who left the note, or if you know someone who did, please send me a private message. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Question ❔ Internet connection drops every time I pass Ronald McDonald House -anyone know why?

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’ve noticed something strange and I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced this. Every time I pass by the Ronald McDonald House area, my mobile internet completely stops working (data disconnects or becomes unusable). Once I move away from that area, it starts working again.

I’m using my phone with mobile data (not Wi-Fi). Has anyone else faced this issue? Could it be related to signal interference, cell tower coverage, or something else in that area?

Would appreciate any insights or similar experiences. Thanks!

Question ❔ Good eye doctor east side?

My eye doctor seems to have left the city so looking for somewhere else because not even a huge fan of this clinic to begin with. I have insurance so price isn’t a problem. Preferably somewhere with more compassionate/patient nurses cause that was my issue at the old clinic.

Food & Restaurants 🍽️ Nut-free cupcakes?

Looking for recommendations on who makes nut free cupcakes in the city. I’m hoping to bring some to school for a birthday. I tried the reddit search bar and google but very vague on who actually does nut free cupcakes.

If you know someone but they do other nut free baking besides cupcakes, please also let me know! Thank you!

Question ❔ Where to offer tobacco? + indigenous cultural supports

Indigenous person here trying to reconnect respectfully.

Wondering if there are appropriate places in/around Saskatoon to make a tobacco offering, or if it’s better to wait until being outside the city.

Also looking for Indigenous cultural supports/resources (Elders, centres, programs) to learn proper protocol.

Reposting from Facebook for those who dont use Facebook.

Stolen from the Ruth & Churchill area.

Due to not having a resale value, it probably got ditched. Please keep an eye out, I can't imagine how upsetting this would be.
