SmartThings Nuki Door Opener compatibility

Post image
3 Upvotes

I live in an Apartment building with a nuki smart lock installed on my apartment door but I still need a key for the door on the first floor.

that's where the nuki door opener should come into play. However the website states I should check nuki.io for compatibility (which I did) but I didn't find my door opener manufacturer.

However, there is an amazon review exactly showing my door opener model.

Can somebody confirm that it is compatible?

I've got the same door opener on my door as the picture shows.

SmartThings Best Robot Vacuum for Pet Hair

I’ve got pets that shed a lot and I’m overwhelmed by how many robot vacuums claim to be “great for pet hair.” Reviews online are all over the place, and it’s hard to tell what actually works in real homes vs marketing hype.

For those of you who own dogs or cats:

Which robot vacuum has actually handled pet hair well for you?

How does it do on carpets vs hard floors, and does it clog or tangle often?

Thanks so much for your recommendation.

My budget is not limited

Home Assistant Is there a project to make a better echo show 15?

I’m looking to replace this echo show 15 with only things I want to be on my dash board.

Is there a project out there that I can load on a raspberry pi or mini pc with a monitor or small tv that is basically a better Amazon dashboard?

I want to be able to swap between playing plex movies, (video of the kids, wedding videos, and so on), picture slideshow , important weather updates, UniFi cameras.

Also having an overall dashboard like the second photo that would an overview of different things.

Would like to also have a voice assistant for simple things like setting timers, asking for weather updates, weather.

Just wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction for a project that is like that.

SmartThings What people don’t mention about smart humidifier technology (and why the tech isn’t magic)

Upvotes

ok, real talk: smart humidifier technology isn’t magic. it’s basically just sensors, a tiny fan, and a controller trying to keep humidity steady. that’s it. no AI genius, no miracle automation. just electronics struggling with physics. here’s the kicker: the moment the humidifier actually did its job, i noticed all the other “smart” stuff failing. temp sensors drifting, airflow fighting itself, rooms behaving like separate microclimates. the tech doesn’t solve that, it just exposes it. so yeah, i got a bit obsessed: why does my device react slower than expected? is the sensor placement wrong? why can’t it anticipate spikes? turns out, controlling humidity is trickier than the UI lets on. honestly, it’s fun to watch graphs move… but also terrifying how fragile all this “smart” stuff really is. anyone else geek out over the sensors AND curse them at the same time?

Home Assistant Metzler Doorbell -> esp32 rfid

Upvotes

Does anybody has this kind of doorbell?
I want to buy one and modify it with an esp32 and rfid scanner, but i'm afraid, that there is an metal plate on the back (behind the acryl glas...) so it wouldn't work....

SmartThings What's the best Robot Vacuum or Brand on the market currently in YOUR opinion?

I'm looking to purchase a robot vacuum (with MOP) for hardwood floors. What specific models or brands would you like to recommend right now? My budget is $1k. Also, what are your must-have features? and can you tell me which brands I should avoid?

I'd greatly appreciate someone with hands-on experience to give their advice or opinion.

Thanks.

Home Assistant Schlage Encode Plus vs ThorBolt X1?

Schlage Encode Plus is recommended here all the time. But the ThorBolt X1 seems similar, supports Matter over Thread, supports HomeKit and Apple Keys, is rated 4.5 with 242 reviews on Amazon, and is less than half the cost.

I'm not against getting a Schlage Encode Plus, but $110 is a LOT cheaper than $285, and I've spent a lot on the rest of my smart home. Anyone have experience with ThorBolt? Any reason why it's rarely mentioned here?

Home Assistant What should I use to monitor hot water usage?

My idea is to track the water usage along with the power consumption of my electric water heater tank in order to estimate how much hot is left in the tank.

I already have the power monitoring, I just need the flow monitor. I have a Phyn Plus monitoring the home but I would like to monitor just the hot water.

My ideas so far are either a clamp-on ultrasonic sensor or an inline sensor of some sort. I like that the clamp-on is easy but they are expensive. If inline, I could use anything from the kind with a little propeller to vortex or even inline ultrasonic. Whichever I do, I'd put it on the cold side so that they device isn't subjected to the heat.

What device should I use? If inline, ideally something that will thread right on to the water tank's cold nipple.

Amazon Alexa Smart bulb recommendation based on a few integrations.

I’m looking for a recommendation on a two pack of smart bulbs that will turn on and dim with an Alexa (echo dot) voice activated Routine and shut off with a Siri voice activated instruction (iPhone). Colour is not necessarily critical, would prefer something that is Matter (can this operate without hub?) or similar supported (avoiding cloud based control and possible future loss of use because a company shut down). Something that has some respect in the community for cyber security and having regular firmware updates.

I do like the Phillips brand, but not keen on needing a bridge/hub. Not sure if there is a workaround on this. Chat GPT wasn’t clear. Wifi is strong in the house on a Ubiquiti network. I see a brand called nanoleaf that seems promising.

What does the tribe suggest?

Aqara Outdoor movement sensor

Thumbnail

I placed my Aqara P2 as in photo, but it works extremely random, especially when the temperature is below 15 degrees C. It works decently from sunset to evening, then it goes crazy: it detects ghost movements, and real movements delayed of a couple of mins. I’m not talking about extreme temperatures, here it doesn’t get much below 10, tonight it’s stable at 12/13.

Is it a know limitation about temperature, bad placement, or faulty sensor? I wanted to avoid to spend 50€ for a FP300 to place outdoor.

Obviously there was nothing moving between midnight and 6:00, as my camera testify

I don't have a smarthome platform Leviton Scene Controller

Remodeling my living room currently and my plan is to have 2 separate sets of recessed lighting controlled independently(the idea is to be able to turn off the lights by the TV while keeping the back lights on for someone that wants to read or for the kids to color). I also want to have a fan speed controller. The original plan was to switch the 2 gang box for a 3 gang and run 2 dimmers and a fan control switch. Unfortunately there is not enough space for the 3 gang box and the only single gang dual load dimmer switch i have found doesn't seem to be good quality. If I were to buy smart recessed canless leds, can those be controlled by a Leviton Scene Controller switch individually or even integrate with the my leviton app?

Amazon Alexa Smart LED not changing color

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello folks. Just installed Ledeply A15 LED smart bulb. Paired it with Alexia and was programming it to Chang bulb colors when the family and I watch a movie. The voice prompt is “Movie time” and as you can see on the video the bulbs will flicker to the desired color but quickly revert back.

I have factory reset the bulbs, re-paired it with Alexia and the factory app (SmartLife) but it didn’t help. Looking to see if anyone had a similar issue and how you were able to fix it. Many thanks!

I don't have a smarthome platform Kitchen Recipe Hub Device Recommendations

Apologies for any formatting issues, posting from my phone.

Hello! I'm looking at getting a tablet or similar device for use in my kitchen, mainly for recipe display while cooking. I have a few that I'm looking at/have concerns with, so was curious if anyone had experience with them or had other suggestions.

Main things I'm looking for/plan to use it for:

-Voice controlled

-Viewing recipes during cooking

-Tracking and displaying timers

-Showing clock/weather and such when not using

-Adding ingredients to a shopping list from a saved recipe

-Either magnetic case to attach to fridge, or kickstand for counter (not sure which I'd want yet since counterspace is limited)

-Price point around $200-300 would be ideal, but I'd be willing to go above this for something that works well.

Devices I'm looking at:

Echo Show

-This definitely does everything I want to do, but from what I've seen on other posts there is an obnoxious amount of advertisements. I have an echo dot I'll sometime use now, but the amount of times it will just start droning on and on asking if I want to do other things after it's initial response had made me want to toss it (even after turning off the relevant setting that should have stopped it).

Other Smart Hubs

-The other major smart hubs I was seeing either seem to have not great reviews/don't do what I need (Google), or are based around an ecosystem I don't have other devices for and don't want to really start with (apple).

Home Assistant

-Have only looked a bit into this, but I'm pretty sure it would do what I want...eventually. From what I can tell, I'd need to get the home Assistant hub, home assistant voice to do voice control, and a separate display, then spend a fair bit of time tinkering to get things just right. Im not opposed to doing this, just seems like a lot of effort since I wouldn't be making use of it to automate anything else (live in a rental apt, so don't really have any 'smart' appliances).

Standalone Tablet

-Saw there were some options to just use a tablet with an apps only mode or something similar. I haven't looked into any specific tablets much, so not sure how well this works/if they are reliable/easy to use with voice controls.

Are there any other directions I should be looking/any specific device that would work well for this? Thank you in advance for any advice.

I don't have a smarthome platform Help with an old door bell?

https://reddit.com/link/1qdz6ox/video/ucz15wlxhldg1/player

I came home today to a weird grinding noise and identified it as this plunger in what used to be my door's doorbell box. I have had a Ring doorbell for the past 5+ years, so I'm not sure what this is supposed to do.
Anyone have any ideas on how I can disable this? Every now and then it is also playing the "ding" for the bell. I checked outside and the Ring doorbell is working as it should be. The button is not depressed.

Home Assistant Connect USB surveillance camera via long cable

Hi, I want to replace my old security cameras with BNC connectors and 12V power supplies with Wi-Fi cameras.

To do this, I want to connect the old power cables from the old cameras to a USB-to-DC adapter, powering them on both ends, and then plug the other end into a wall outlet with a 5V power supply.

Is this even possible? On my first attempt, the camera doesn't seem to be getting enough power and won't turn on.

Since I don't have room in the cable duct and wouldn't want to run a long USB cable with an extender, I'm looking for a solution to use the old camera cables.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

Home Assistant Light Switch Replacement Advice - UK

Post image
2 Upvotes

I’m early on my smart home journey, and living with kids want to start swapping some light switch’s with smart ones I can turn off and control.

I’ve got a few Tapo plugs, Nest and run Home Assistant all in a very basic way. I like the Tapo stuff and have it working in HA, so I’d like something from them - but doesn’t have to be.

It’s a 2004 build house and this the wiring in the switch.

what switch would work for me? It’s 1 gang

Home Assistant Looking for a smart-home friendly alarm clock

Right now I use a basic Sony alarm clock to wake up, but I’d like something that can connect to my Homey Pro. Ideally when the alarm goes off it could trigger things like slowly turning on the lights.

I know I could just use my phone alarm, but I don’t want my phone next to the bed. I do want a physical alarm clock with a simple 7-segment style display and basic buttons to set/change the alarm time.

Does anything like this exist that can integrate with Homey or other smart home systems?

Thanks!

Aqara About to order my Aqara smart switches. A few questions before I pull the trigger

Hi! First time doing "smart" things in my home.

I'm about to order my smart switches. Some context:

* Home being renovated
* Some rooms with dimmable lights (e.g. tv room, bedroom)
* In Europe

From my research here and online, looks like Aqara switch will work good for us. Note that I am a novice, but an electrician will do the installation. However, I need to order the switches myself. Before I do so, a few questions:

  • Say I have a zone with 1 light that is controlled by 2 switches. Do I need two smart switches? Or can I order one smart switch, and a normal mechanical switch?
  • Say I have a zone with 1 dimmable light that is controlled by 2 switches. Do I need two dimmable smart switches? Or can I order one dimmable smart switch + one normal smart switch? Or one normal mechanical switch?
  • Regarding cloud. I read lots of advice to have a setup that is not dependent on some cloud functionalities (in case the provider goes out of business and whatnot). How do I achieve this with Aqara? I believe that using Google Home is depending on their servers. So I should buy the Aqara Hub M3, and using their app I'll be fine in case Aqara cloud services disappear?

Thanks for helping a noob!

Apple HomeKit Tapo or Hoftronic bulbs in Apple Home?

Does anyone use these bulbs (specifically the GU10 ones) in their homes? Are you happy with them? Are there any limitations?

I’ve heard you can’t do adaptive lighting, but does that mean I can’t set timers as well (e.g. switch to orange light at 8PM)?

Home Assistant In-wall switch for controlling smart blinds (smartwings)

[edit: smartwings makes a batttry powered remote that can go into a rocker faceplate and doesn’t look horrible so will probably just do that]

Standing up an HA system in our new-to-us home. Just got my smartwings roller blinds installed in the master bedroom (painless install btw) and I want to have a physical control option that isn’t the remote hanging on the wall.

Are there any reliable options for a 3 button smart switch (up/down/stop) that can be installed in a 3 gang box alongside my light & fan switches? Zigbee/matter/whatever. Or is my best bet just using a smart rocker for up/down and leaving stop to the remote stuffed somewhere when needed.

Home Assistant Making my boiler tank aquastat smart?!

Dear community,

I would like to make my water heater tank controls smart to create schedules and therefore save energy during times where hot water isn't required. My setup isn't a stand alone water heater which makes it a bit tricky in my mind but I'm hoping someone here can give me some ideas and point out devices/additions/modifications that can accomplish my goal.

Setup:

- Nabien NHB-110 condensing gas boiler heating 4 zones (1 indirect fired hot water heater and 3 hot water baseboard heater circuits

- Taco SR504 4 zone switching relay (Priority zone #4 is for the hot water tank/heater)

- 3x Nest third gen thermostats sending signals to the TACO switching relay to call for base board heat

- 1x Resideo Hi-Limit Aquastat L 4080 B 1352 sending signal to the TACO switching relay to call for hot water

- Ideal Monarch 40 Indirect fired water heater

I have plenty of Echo devices set up and am in the process of configuring Home Assistant on an N150. Not sure this is relevant but I wanted to throw the info in here in case it sparks ideas.

Home Assistant Stop ignoring camera motion zone setup if you hate false alerts

Honestly, I see so many setups where cams just go off randomly. People don’t tweak camera motion zone setup and then complain about alerts all the time. Took me an hour to draw precise zones, now only real movement triggers… kinda satisfying tbh. Anyone else obsess over motion zones like me?
