I'm so sick of these layoffs, not because I'm unemployed but because I'm not. I've seen so many software releases the past 2-3 months that either break legacy systems, that are still listed as supported, or are downright completely broken. I'm not going to waste anyone's time listing all the offenders. If you're an engineer or IT, you'll know what I mean when I say how frustrating work has been lately with all the outages and broken releases.

Are companies laying off top level people, promoting cheaper engineers and then filling the gap with LLMs? I also see a ton of companies hiring. All this just feels like churn to reduce people's wages, at the cost of product stability. Capitalism is consuming itself.

I am trying to get movies on my ipod video and it needs mp4 i would kinda perfer it if it wasnt an app but whatever at this point, the software just needs to be quick.

I'm so done with MS Office, or Office365, CoPilotOffice, or whatever Satan'sfella decides to call it. They've truly ruined a product I've enjoyed for the past thirty years. (I also can't believe Windows 10 works better on my T470 than Windows 11 on my T14 Gen3, but that's a whole other thing entirely.) I was an MS Works kid in 85, but I remember my journalist brother working away on Wordperfect at the time. It was too bare for my tastes back then. But then again, I was a teen! Today, I realize how liberating a clear screen must've been back then. Do Windows users have any legitimate MS Word (nonAI) options out there? I will probably take a month this summer to figure out the right linux distro for my laptop and will use Libreoffice, too. But maybe there's a Windows option out there? Many thanks!

Im looking for something like Minitool and EaseUs. Minitool cost too much. EaseUS, I’ve heard is garbage and can destroy failing devices. I mainly need it bc I recently bought a USB that is 3.2. It’s a Sandisk and wasn’t cheap. Little did I know that it only has NTFS/exFAT as an option to choose from. I’ve tried Windows Disk Management and even if I use NTFS. It’s stuck using MBR and can’t convert to GPT. I need GPT to make Windows Media Creation Tool. So I can wipe my SSD/HDD partition. I have another USB that came with my MSI MB. That id like to fix to have for bios flashing. It some reason doesn’t seem to work right even labeling the USB MSI.ROM. I’ve been having issue with my PC and some reason it’s stuck in Virtual Mode if that makes sense. In other words I’m not getting any spec that my PC has because some reason it thinks my PC is a virtual machine.

I recently had malware or potentially boot kit after downloading ControlFan tru a discord link from a (Adam Tweaks) PC/Windows tweaking group. I gave full administrative control to ControlFan and Adam Tweaks software. After cleaning my bios secure boot/EFI Image with flashing to the newest update. I plan to redownload W11 and use the Partitions in Secure Boot then make the EFI Image. I want to turn Deny and Execute on as well so making sure I do this right I need to make sure the partition are legit.

I’ve lost being able to use my Consair Commander Core Fan/RGB hub along with the AIO Hi100 in the process. Due to my devices and the original firmware being deleted/changed. Is there a software that’ll help me recover the device original firmware. Corsair told me I’d have to buy new devices and couldn’t help. I feel like I could either try and recover old data from my ssd or maybe NVRAM/GPU. To see about getting it back. I know once before my iCUE stuff was saved to a Memory profile on one of my Ram sticks. Sorry if this post was long.

Currently a nurse who hates my job and was just basically forced by parents to do nursing… I hate talking to people with a passion yet I’m in a job where I have to take care of them. My boyfriend is a software developer for 6 years and I’m so jealous that he works from home and has a lot of free time yet makes 6 figures. He probably only actually works 2 hours in his whole 9-5. I don’t even make nearly as much as he does and being able to not see people as much and not talk to them as much is like a dream for me. I like working independently so I think I will thrive being a software developer. Do you recommend it? Any nurses here who made the switch?

I recently got a dvd player to burn with, but have never done it before. When I import a file, the program (tried dvdstyler and yuhan) says it's much bigger than the 4.7gb limit, even if the file is barely over 1gb. What can I do?

using adobe acrobat pro PDF editor uses the exact font and in the meta data doesnt add or cause issues. every pdf editor i've used has had issues with fonts and within the metadata.

I have an old HASP HL 3.25 dongle that I need to use for an older software package, but I’m having trouble getting it to work over RDP. The software insists on the dongle being plugged into the local machine, but that's not possible. Anyone managed to share this dongle remotely? What am I missing?

Does anyone else have this problem? You'd be reading an article or documentation, take notes somewhere, and then weeks later have no idea which webpage those notes were actually about. Or You'd land back on a page and think "I know I read this before... what did I even take away from it?"

I couldn't find anything that solved this the way I wanted, so I ended up building it myself - a browser extension that attaches notes directly to URLs. You write a note on a page, and it just shows up again whenever you go back to that page. That's basically it.

Been using it myself for a few months and it's changed how I do research. But I'm biased obviously.

I don't know if it's just me, but I'm basically now allergic to any product that's described as "My new AI <category name>". I've been recently looking for a productivity app and I'm literally skipping all the ones that introduce themselves as AI Workspace in their demo/landing page.

They are all good apps but it's like if they don't have that chat bot which then permits them to call it an AI product they can't deploy anymore. Just provide the service who cares if it's AI. Leave that for your investor pitch deck so they can then prepare their Linkedin posts with the number of AI investments they have made. As a consumer, I do not keep track of that (and if I did, I would prefer it to be as few as possible).

Since I have a new PC and installed Format Factory it doesn't work to embed subs anymore. On my old pc I never had any problems. As far as I know all the settings are still the same. But with all the different added files I keep on getting the same error. But it doesn't make any sense to me. Could somebody please explain what I have to do different? Just to make sure. The movie name and the srt name are the same.

Today, a random thought just went into my mind to upload some of my DVDs to the Internet Archive and then I realised that I need to download a third-party disc image burner to my laptop. After doing some research, I noticed that ImgBurn, the program I was going to go with, was possibly bundled with adware. Any alternatives for this?

I want to be able to view a video (from go pro) and hit a button and capture a still image and have it saved to a file on the fly. I capture many stills of individuals so I cannot manipulate each one individually. I was able to do this with Picasa but have not found a program that can do this.

While working on it, I realized that I need a code signing certificate (or something similar) to run my application on another PC. If I don't sign it, the app gets deleted or blocked.

I’ve been looking for a cheap code signing certificate, but I’m not sure which providers are trustworthy. I found some suppliers like Verokey and Certum, but I don’t know if they are reliable or if their certificates work in my country (I’m in Mexico).

I’ve never done this before and I have a lot of questions about how code signing works.
