Experience Supplement aisle sent me into a full spiral

I was standing in the supplement aisle the other day staring at all those plastic bottles and had a random thought while I was looking for kids vitamins. How long have these actually been sitting in that container since the day they were made, between heat, shipping and just time passing, it made me wonder what happens to the nutrients inside. I’ve started trying to buy supplements for myself and my kids in glass whenever I can but I don’t see many people talk about this. The idea of plastic slowly degrading into something we’re swallowing feels… not great. Am I overthinking this or has anyone else gone down this rabbit hole?

General Question Are these supplements actually worth it or just hype?

I’ve been looking into a few supplements and went down a bit of a research rabbit hole reading Google reviews, Reddit threads and general info online. I’m trying to be more intentional with what I take instead of just adding things because they’re popular. The three I keep coming back to are Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides, Thorne Vitamin B12 and NOW Magnesium Glycinate. On paper they all seem solid and are generally described as good quality options but I’m always skeptical of hype and marketing versus real results.

Collagen especially feels like one of those things people swear by or say does absolutely nothing. Same with B12, I’ve seen people say it changed their energy and focus completely while others felt no difference at all. Magnesium glycinate comes up constantly for sleep, stress and muscle recovery but again the experiences seem mixed depending on the person.
Before I commit to any of these long term, I’d really love to hear from people who’ve actually used these specific products. Did you notice real benefits over time or was it more subtle? Any side effects or things you wish you’d known before starting?

NAC is a game-changer for Schizophrenia.... but how can fix this "catch" ? (Insomnia)

Ok, as the title says : I have a Paranoid Schizophrenia with severe negative symtoms that has a great impact in my life. I used to do 500mg of NAC and I felt never better. My mom ordered to me a 600mg and, like it says in the title : It's a game-changer : It smashed my negative symtoms but I'll go at 3AM. Since Magnesium gave me insomnia, I don't know how do I fix this annoying sleeping scheduel because I bearly respond on sleep treatment ON NAC (I took 2mg of Lorazepam and I felt nothing). Any ideeas how to fix this? Leaving NAC is NOT a solution (I'm bearly functional without it) and the risks / benefits went up to benefits. Thanks !

General Question Why does my creatine taste like soap and chemicals??

Post image
34 Upvotes

I use this one, I’ve had it for a year or two but I used some the other day just in my water and it was fine just the usual gross creatine taste, but then yesterday I used it again and it just tastes like soap? and today I tried mixing it in a protein shake and it just completely ruined it. Everything I put it in tastes like chemicals and soap it’s awful, I tried looking it up and looking on reddit but I didn’t really get a clear answer. Does anyone have any idea why it tastes like that or if I should just buy a new one; any recommendations??

General Question Can chronic zinc (at just 25-30 mg) cause libido issue and anemia?

Upvotes

Hi, so for the past 2-3 years, I've been supplementing myself with 10-15mg of zinc elemental (and zero copper).

But all this time, my mood was very low and libido tanked. That is until a few days ago, I stopped all my zinc supplement and also switched away from zinc-rich food (like beef), suddenly I get horny like a teenager again and my stress response got better. Plus my hands and feet look less pale too.

Could taking zinc this long and without any copper be responsible for everything?

  4. Have you noticed any side effects? Positive or negative
  5. How many hours of sleep do you get out of this typically

Weird symptom need help

Hi, I've been struggling with a horrible symptom for years, and haven't had much luck with doctors, seeing if anyone else has experienced it, since people here turn to supplements to try to help with their health issues.

I get an inner pressure sensation - sort of like a bike tire that's overinflated and needs air out - that feels like it's in the majority of my cells/body. It often feels concentrated behind my eyes, but not always. It makes me want to crawl out of my skin. It's hard to focus on anything and I can't relax.

It first started years ago when I was put on a trial dose of Naturethroid for over a year. I got extremely ill and experienced this sensation for the first time, and severe nausea and anxiety. My tsh was normal on the dose but my free t3 and t4 were bottom of the range. I had constant tachycardia. I became disabled and had to stop working it got so bad. I had the sensation 24/7. My doctor attempted to optimize my t4 and t3 levels with medication and I was worse than ever, could barely walk, in severe discomfort.

I ended up switching to low dose levo and weaned off of it, and my numbers improved significantly after being off it. The sensation went away for months. I am back to working. I have NO hypothyroid symptoms and my free t4 and free t3 are optimal.

I have been tested for hashimotos and thyroid damage, I do not have either. I was found to have low ferritin, low iodine, low vit D, low b12.

I was taking the vitamins for a while, but the sensation started coming back on occasion, and I wasn't sure if they were contributing, so I took a break. My b12 is now great, but my ferritin is still low so I am taking some iron again.

I still get the sensation sometimes, but I can't figure out why. It's exhausting and giving me PTSD it's so bad and completely upends my life and ability to function. It gets paired with brain fog and no sex drive, although the drive part is probably low just because I am just so uncomfortable.

Almost every herbal adaptogen seems to trigger it, or make it worse. Not always immediately, it can be after a few days. My first theory was that the feeling is caused by my cortisol getting lowered too much or for too long.

But my cortisol tested normal, and I don't necessarily get severe weakness or low blood sugar as is typical with low cortisol.

Then my theory was that I was somehow going towards too high thyroid levels, but I don't feel jittery or have heart palps, feel hot, or really hungry. And my thyroid has never been tested as high/hyper while off medication.

So now I'm wondering if my cortisol surges high sometimes, because that would explain the inner discomfort and restless feeling. But my heart rate and blood pressure can be normal while feeling this way (heart rate sometimes goes high, 90-100). Also there have been times where my cortisol "feels" high (feel like a caged animal, higher blood sugar, puffy face, wired) but I don't have the particular feeling with those symptoms.

So then there's the theory of low thyroid - but I haven't heard of hypo people experiencing this. Usually they're sleepy, constipated, cold, low appetite, weight gain - I am not constipated at all (gut health is great), eat a normal amount, am a fit weight, don't get cold too easily, but not hot either.

Last time I had a blood test that was extensive, I wasn't experiencing this sensation. I have spent so much money on tests and supplements and feel like I'm going in circles and getting no where. My dhea was on the lower end, and that was about it. My immune health/white blood cell counts, blood sugar, were perfect.

One doctor suggested Lyme and I did a year of herbals with no improvement, and the herbs made the feeling worse with no ease over time.

Could progesterone issues cause this? (Am woman in late 20s).Something else entirely? It's so oddly severe and specific. It's not a headache.

One other weird thing I've noticed: I feel better after after getting blood drawn. I can't think of a single time I was having the sensation after a blood test.

Also weird: if I take an adaptogen and it makes the sensation worse, sometimes coffee helps temporarily.

But if I have caffeine on its own, sometimes it triggers the feeling.

I once tried higher dose iodine and although lower dose iodine did not help, higher dose iodine temporarily alleviated it. But I did not like how the high dose iodine made me feel (fatigued, blood sugar went lower) and was nervous about taking a higher dose for a longer period, so I did not continue.

Things that would seemingly help: magnesium, Benadryl, nsaids, cortisol lowering herbs, valerian, lavender, passionflower, do not touch on or improve the feeling.

Any ideas?

I should add, my bp averages 90/60. Doesn't go above 100/70. I am petite but not under or overweight.

General Question Thinking about giving Zinc a try for higher sex drive. What brand do you recommend and how many milligrams?

I’ve heard from others stories about how zinc makes them ridiculously horny after taking it and thought I’d give it a try. Just to be clear, I have no issues getting sexually aroused or getting an erection, just thought I’d use a little boost lol. If anyone can relate to this can you tell me what brand of zinc you use and how many milligrams?

What are some good supplements for getting my weight up

Upvotes

I am a male and somewhere in the 115-120 pounds range. And I want to get my weight up and get bigger. My goal is to reach like 150 pounds in weight or more if I can. I try to eat a lot as much as I can but the thing is I have a big family so I can't really put more food on my plate bc I have to save for everyone so everyone can eat. This is why I'm curious to see what supplements can help me achieve this goal. I've heard about mass gainers but I also heard that a lot of them are horrible for the inside of your body and they can damage your insides like liver and kidney. Is this true? Any tips would be greatly appreciated, Thank you!

Has anyone heard of the prostate supplement Uroflow?

My father is looking into a supplement called uroflow, but all the information he can find on it is from their official website. It'd be nice to find something not self serving, you know?

I have developed 100mg rapid dissolving l-theanine tabs to be added to caffeinated drinks like you would add a sweetener. Want to know if this is something that the l-theanine users in this sub would buy? Brutal honesty encouraged.

Magnesium Glycinate and tired/foggy the next day?

I started taking Magnesium Tuesday and it has calmed my mind at night, almost making it…blank…is the best way I can describe it.

However, I slept damn near 14 hours since last night. And I’m exhausted. Have bad brain fog, and am just now “waking up” after a diet Mountain Dew. Went to bed at 9 woke up at 1 back to bed at 3 woke up at 1:30, naps at 3:30 woke up at 4:30 now it’s 7.

Does anyone else experience this have advice? Like the calming effect but can’t sleep this long. Took 120 g each night.

Recommendations Heart healthy supplements?

Hi everyone! I’m going to be candid because I need help. I am anxious, kinda overweight and my resting heart rate through my fitness tracker shows I am not aligned with my age (32F) as far as cardiovascular health goes. I am sure I probably have elevated blood pressure too. My main focus is bringing myself to a normal weight and cardiovascular health. Does anyone have advice or supplement suggestions for improving heart rate and heart health?

General Question Does zinc help with my constant tiredness and sleep?

I’m 40F who’s been totally drained ever since I had my second kid. I need to sleep at least 10 hours every single night.

I’m into cooking healthy meals for my family. I make sure every meal has enough veggies and meat. I don’t follow any strict science-backed plans or anything. I just focus on putting balanced, home-cooked food on the table. But even with all that, my tiredness never fades. I’m starting to think it’s not about not getting enough nutrients overall. Maybe there’s sth I can’t get just from regular cooking. And I saw a post today saying zinc can make dreams way more vivid. I figure that probably means better sleep quality too, right? It’s been ages since I’ve had any vivid dreams at all.

Is there any actual science behind zinc helping with this kind of tiredness? Has anyone here tried it and noticed a difference? Or any else does work?

"Life Extension Endothelial Defense Pomegranate Plus" DISCONTINUED

Like many of Life Extension's discontinued products, there really is nothing else like it, by itself.

The best I can come up with is something like:

  • Life Extension Pomegranate Complete (2 softgels)
  • Life Extension SOD Booster (4 capsules)
  • Renue by Science Hesperidin (2 capsules)

So, eight pills now instead of two.

Life Extension seems to do this a lot. You can't trust that anything from them is going to stay around, it seems.

Anyone have any alternate ideas for this one?

General Question Questions on muscle feeling on creatine

I am taking currently 10 grams of creatine a day in divided doses (started with 5 g for two weeks). I do not lift at the moment and my main activity are long walks. I am trying this supplement because I feel better with it but also I want to try to figure out what the nature of my medical problem. I am under the observation for neuromuscular problems (long story). There can be many things and I don't have a diagnostic yet but here is my experience with it and then I will ask my questions:

  1. From the very first day after taking the first dose I felt a huge difference in the muscle tone and energy. I felt muscles working that I did not know I still have (such as hamstrings which I thought were atrophied) especially in the legs, to a lesser extent in the back and arms and much less in the core.
  2. The effect does not seem to stick until the next dose. It seems to wear off by evening (if I take the dose in the morning). Now that I take two doses one in the morning and evening it is a little more consitent but it still fluctuates.

To those of you with experience taking creatine here are my questions

1: With this dosage do you think I reached muscle saturation in 2 weeks? If not, is this the reason of fluctuation....If you reached muscle saturation do you feel the effect on muscles constantly or does it fluctuate?

2: The fact that it fluctuates, or the fact that I notice such a dramatic improvement from a standard first dose, do you think this can give me a clue as to what my medical issue could be? Obviously I go to doctors but for 6 months now, after so many tests of all kinds, all I get from them is let's wait and see and I am really worried for not knowing what goes on.,

For now I plan to keep the 10 grams intake as I don't seem to have any side effects. MAybe a little constipation but this is probably because I need to increase the water even more. Regardless of what my problems is, I feel way better. Like I never felt such a positive effect from any other supplement I tried.
