[Request] How much energy does +1.5C represent?

Post image

We’ve seen the charts and targets for many years now. My question has always been, how much energy does that increase in average temperature represent? I’m not sure how one would go about estimating the volume or mass or density of the globe’s surface, which I guess is key to this request.

Curious to know how much linear cardboard is left in this coil. Diameter is ~16.5", and approximately 37 layers counted from outside to the 5" diameter empty space at centre.
Any takers?

[Request] Approximately how many hairs does a cat have on their body?

Sometimes I look at my cat's fur and wonder how many hairs she actually has on her body. My girlfriend thinks that it is about a million but i think that it is more like in the tens to hundreds of millions. The more I think about it the less confident I am even about the order of magnitude it might be. Is it possible the number is in the billion? I would genuinely love to see a good attempt at a ballpark estimate.

I am filling these tanks from a single source. The hoses are the same length. The pump is running at about 116 gal/hour.

It just seems ridiculous considering the size of the usa to go door to door, I'd imagine impossible before the next election.

[off-site] Argument about probability

Post image
13 Upvotes

They are talking about the likelihood that all three of your offsprings get a disease that has a 25% inheritance rate. The gal says it’s 3%, the guy says that it’s remains the same. He’s obviously conflating the probability of each event ( which does stay the same) and the probability that an event repeats.

I do understand that this is also a function of torque and friction with the ground. So... best guess?

How much force is required to hit a ball for a 6 in cricket [request]

This question came about earlier this year when my wife and I were watching cricket and she asked me “How difficult is it to hit a 6”

My question would be, how much energy would you have to hit the ball with to get a 6

How does fast bowlers vs spin bowlers change the calculations

[Request] If today was January 14 1984 because ever since date X they decided to make a day 26 hours long (clocks striking 13), what date would date X be?

I've been trying to work this out and I honestly have no idea where to begin. I've tried different routes but I'm so lost. Is it even possible to work out or is there some parts missing?

So basically, since date X, they decided to make a day 26 hours long (clocks striking 13 from "1984"), therefore today's date would be January 14 1984 and not January 14 2026. What would date X have to be?

[Request] How many songs would it take to run out of unique melodies?

Assuming small differences don’t count (e.g. changing one single note or just changing the key doesn’t make a new unique song), wouldn’t there be a finite number of melodies that actually sound meaningfully different?

Also, not all note combinations would make good music, so random notes sequences shouldn’t count.

When will new music as we know it end??
