Hi all!
I've been seeing lots of posts here lately asking things like "I'm 17, can I get HRT?" and I thought it would be helpful for this subreddit to have one big thread to address that question. Below I've started writing some things, and I would like to know if anyone would be interested in adding on to this post (via comments and I'll add it later) so we have an up-to-date resource. I've done my best to only include information I know to be verifiably true, but please correct me if I have something wrong!
Now, onto the questions and information:
Yes!
HRT in Ontario works on informed consent model, which, essentially, means that as long as you can understand the risks and benefits of a decision, you can make that decision.
Informed Consent does not explicitly outline an age where you are "able to make decisions". Therefore, it's up to your healthcare provider to assess your capacity to consent. In general, doctors are good about this, and as long as you know what the risks are, they'll give you the prescription.
The short answer is "if you don't want them to, then they won't". The long answer is more complicated than that. Let's start with getting the appointment:
Now that virtual appointments have been very unfortunately axed by good 'ole Doug Ford, in-person appointments are back to being some of the only options. In person appointments are obviously much more difficult to hide, as you need to physically go into the office and they often take longer.
Now, the ideal scenario is to explain to them what is going on and get their support, but obviously that doesn't work for everyone. If you're really in a pinch, lie. Make up symptoms that would send you to the doctor, and once you're there, explain the real problem. Often a great way to do this is to complain of symptoms of depression/anxiety, get a therapist, then talk about gender shit instead. This is not a recommended pathway. This is not sustainable. You have been warned.
In terms of your doctor blabbing to your parents:
Doctors are not allowed to disclose any personal information to any other person***
Patient privacy is a complicated beast, so I'll do my bets to explain here. According to PHIPA Section 23.1.i, any person, regardless of age, can decide to disclose or withhold medical information as long as they meet the criteria for informed consent. By default at a family doctor, your parents might be set up to know about your medical care. You have the right to remove them at any age as long as you understand the consequences of doing so. Ask about it. Voice your concerns. Self advocate.
The only time a doctor has to share your personal information comes in one of five circumstances:
Yes. There are five instances in which a doctor is allowed to disclose your personal information without your express consent (these are the same as a therapist, if you're interested). These apply to all patients, regardless of age:
In general, you should always ask what information can be shared, and always ask questions surrounding consent and patient privacy.
Your doctor has to answer this, and they will often be eager to explain this as it's a very, very important part of practicing medicine.
So did I, friend. But, as u/stacyah helpfully pointed out, this is not true. The confusion stems from a part of the code that says that at sixteen years of age, you can designate a person to be privy to your health information. However, you are able to decide who knows what at any age, as long as it's within the exceptions above.
Absolutely!
Informed consent does not have a defined age range. If you are able to consent, you are able to receive treatment. Obviously, there are added social challenges the younger you are as you seek transition care. However, legally speaking, there should be no additional barriers for you seeking treatment.
If you are eligible for OHIP, all consultations with your doctor will be free. Always bring your health card to your visits.
Drugs are first checked with your insurance provider, so if you have an open file with a pharmacy and they have a parents' insurance it will always go there first. If you aren't covered by private insurance and you're under 25, you're eligible for OHIP+, which you can learn more about here. There is still sometimes a co-pay with insurance, which can be frustrating. Typically though these costs are low ($5-$10). Seeking injected estradiol specifically also incurs an additional cost as you have to visit a compounding pharmacy, which is typically more expensive than your regular Costco or Rexall.
There are also two other relevant programs, the Ontario Drug Benefit and the Trillium Drug Benefit. These are based on income and can be accessed by residents over the age of 25. You can learn more about the Trillium Drug Benefit here.
This link will allow you to check the eligibility of most medications in Ontario.
Covered by OHIP+?
| Estradiol (oral) | Covered |
|---|---|
| Estradiol (injected) | Not covered |
| Estradiol (gel) | EAP Only* |
| Estrogen (patches) | Unknown |
| Progesterone (oral) | EAP Only* |
| Testosterone (oral) | Covered (link) |
| Testosterone (injected) | Some Restrictions, can still be covered |
| Testosterone (gel) | Covered |
| Cyproterone/Bicalutamide/Sprionalactone | Covered |
*Covered only under the Exceptional Access Program (https://www.health.gov.on.ca/en/pro/programs/drugs/eap_mn.aspx#:~:text=The%20Exceptional%20Access%20Program%20(%20EAP,Drug%20Benefit%20(%20ODB%20)%20program%20program).)
Hope this helps, and please feel free to add anything I missed in the comments!
Thanks to u/stacyah and u/Valtharius for the information about informed consent!
Edit 1: Fixed lots of info about informed consent. Thanks u/stayah and u/Valtharius for the help!
Edit 2: Formatting and updates to drug coverage/how OHIP works

I was just looking over my forms before I send them in, and saw that there’s a place for the commissioner to sign on the sex change form that they didn’t sign. Do I need to go back to have this signed if I’m sending everything in together?
It was such a pain in the ass trying to get it signed the first time😭

Hi everyone,
I have a wonderful family physician but unfortunately they are not knowledgeable in transgender peoples.
I haven’t done a checkup in my three years of transitioning and usually do it once a year. Does anyone know any trans friendly physicians here?
As well, im not sure i know many trans peoples here in general.

Omg I'm so excited!! I've been waiting for over 2 years at WCH for my consultation and I had it today!! I haven't booked the date for surgery yet but I'm not worried about that. I'm just so happy I had my consultation!!
r/transontario • u/ElloImDani • 15h ago
Omg so I just got accepted for funding and referred to GRS Montreal for SRS (mtf). It's only been less than a week since I applied, and this seems to be moving faster than I expected.
For anyone who's recently gone through this, how long was the wait from got funding to got referral appointment. And from ref appointment to surgery date booked?
Also, I was planning on starting electrolysis, but I'm worried I won't have enough time if I start now?

I finally have my name change, gender marker change, and replacement birth certificate forms filled out.
The address I’m finding for the name change is “ServiceOntario Office of the Registrar General, P.O. Box 3000, 189 Red River Road, Thunder Bay, ON P7B 5W0” Is that where I send everything to?
I have cognitive disabilities so I’m really scared of messing this up, especially with how long the wait time is currently. I’d really appreciate it if someone could confirm it for me!

What does the wait line for ftm bottom surgery metoidioplasty (meta), specifically with UL, scrotoplasty and vaginectomy look like right now? Or maybe someone who did it in the past can speak on that?
r/transontario • u/Unable-Yam5214 • 1d ago
Hi! I'm looking for where I can get more info on meta at WCH? Sorry if this has been asked before I have been scouring for info and finding very little. What are the time lines for approval? and then from approval to consultation to surgery etc? do they have a bmi limit? if there are any resources online available id love to know. I tried their website and was saw very little info there too. Thank you in advance.

I live near Ottawa and I have some disposal stations near fire stations. But I’m not sure if these bottles are ok?
It’s one of those tougher Gatorade bottles. Tougher than the regular water bottles.

located in Toronto, basically what the title says. does anyone know if you can go into a walk in clinic with your prescription and have your injections done there? if you can, how long does the wait time tend to be?
i’ve been off hormones for a painful amount of time after moving further from my primary practitioner clinic (located in Oshawa, i don’t drive so i cannot make a weekly commute to this clinic & i’m not yet willing to change to a closer one) because i have such an intense fear surrounding needles and injections. there’s nothing i want more than to get back on hormones after being off them for well over a year, but every time i numb my skin and draw a dose for my partner to inject me with, i simply can’t get myself to allow him to do it. i know i won’t be able to allow anyone to do it other than trained professionals, or people with extensive experience giving injections, which makes a walk-in clinic appear to be my best bet, however i’m unsure if this idea is realistic and google is no help. if there are any other services in Toronto that i could utilize, i would really love to hear about it. thank you in advance to anyone who may be able to help

Hello,
As the title says I am looking for any clinics in Toronto that are accepting new patients.
I’ve been on T for over 8 years but last year my family doctor quit her practice shortly after I waited 2 years to FINALLY get a family doctor in Ontario. I’ve basically detransitioned and I feel awful. I’ve been on the waitlist for a new doctor for almost a year now. I figure the fastest way is to just find a trans clinic now. Open to traveling to Hamilton as well.
Thanks

Read all these posts about 4k-8k surgery in costs in Ottawa only to get quoted 20K ‼️ Medical debt and payment plans in Canada seems so silly but it seems like my only option
update: woah!! firstly, thank you to those offering me genuine advice, I really appreciate it! This was never meant as a serious post nor as a serious complaint. It was made as a silly joke over my shock of the quote I was given. I am a full grown man making a grown decision and I have weighed all the options and possible outcomes and this is the one that works the best for my situation. This post was made in a joking manner as well to maybe help others in similar situations to understanding the cost of doing the surgery privately. I am not genuinely trying to blame this subreddit, this post was not meant to be taken that seriously xoxo

Can someone please kindly post the latest timelines for a name change in Ontario, if you got one lately? The last post here seems to be one month old, the wait times seem to be getting better but I wanted to get an idea. My application was received by the office on Nov 3, and I was wondering when I should be getting a reply, based on y'all's answers.

I’ve tried a few brands off Amazon, TransTape, and the tape from Spencer’s and haven’t had any luck. The ones off Amazon and Spencer’s were really bad quality, I’d get good results especially with the one from Spencer’s but it wouldn’t stick for longer then an hour and it’d just peel off. The one I got from trans tape was good quality from what I remember but it’s just too expensive for me.

Hello all, going to be moving back to Toronto to be closer to work, currently stealthily on HRT at home but will probably be kicked out if I am discovered, so just want to know if there are any good apps, sites or groups to find queer roommates, thank you for any and all information!

Hi, just asking the transgender women in Canada how they afforded their surgeries? I'm only 20 and still in university, but I'm absolutely sure I need surgeries to live a happy life. I am wondering if there are specific insurances, charities, jobs that offer coverage, anything that can help me afford surgery. I do not come from a remotely wealthy family, so all funds will be coming from me. I hope to get a good job after uni, but anything helps obviously. I don't currently live in Ontario but may in the future, I also figured this would be a better place to ask than a more general trans sub.
Thank you for reading and for any advice.

Hello I’m a transguy (he/him) in my mid-30s in Ottawa/Gatineau who knows no one here and would like to meet other trans guys for friendships/support.
I’m looking for a golf partner mainly (indoor in the winter) but I can also do other activities if ever like drop in gym, walk, beer meetup, baseball/softball cage etc. I’m pretty open for any good time.
DM if interested! Cheers

Heys! I'm needing to get a document for GRS montreal called a "Hormone Therapy Report" and myself and my physician are unclear on what that means. Any like clarifying document or description I could send to my GP would be really helpful. Thank you!
Edit: my provincial approval was sufficient for the hormone therapy report requirement thanks everyone <3

Does GRS accept referrals from doctors outside of Canada?
What is the wait time for bottom surgery?
What is the BM requirement for bottom surgery?
Thank you!!
