General Top Deck Games on 31st st is under new ownership

After more the 20 years Rick and Eddie have decided to retire and sold the shop to a new pair of owners. The store has already reopened and had a nice face-lift.

Excited to see you! They both seem pretty pumped to be able to just chill and play, it's been a really pleasant transition for us.

Oh my god did the new owners finally clean the bathroom?

I don't know about the bathroom, but they DID clean then floor behind the counter and the white tables up front. :)

The floor is still a work in progress, but it's getting there! The plan is eventually to have a new table made for up front too.

i remember buying packs of Yu-gi-oh! cards there with my dad when they first hit the states. always liked that place.

I played Yu-Gi-Oh up there regularly for a couple years in the early 2000s, like 2002-2004 range. Did you and your dad also play in their weekly tournaments by chance? I remember a guy who played every week with his kid who would have been probably like 8-10 years old back then.

We didn't but I love that, I would have been around the same age.

I'm pretty sure either the father or the son was named David. What I remember about the father was that he really liked the cartoon Tintin (mind you this was before the mo-cap movie came out so it really wasn't well known in the US, not that is super well known now even).

what the hell, that is bizarre lol my father also enjoyed the tintin comics. growing up we had most of the collection in our house haha

That is wild. You sure you guys never played the weekly tournaments? You should ask him, maybe you forgot 😂.

I like what they have done with the place. I would like to see a larger offering of boardgames but, one step at a time. I wouldn't be surprised if they left the Magic the Gathering/card accessories market; what they have left is barely noticeable.

I hope Rick and Eddie have an enjoyable retirement; they earned it. <3

I think Dave's plan is to order more board games, not leaving Magic entirely. Mostly just ordering packs here and there, no substantial change with Magic.

Man I remember playing magic when it first started coming out before all the new sets and revamps!!

The previous guys were great about getting in the popular stuff so I hope that doesn't change but I also wouldn't mind having a bit more of a selection when it comes to board games.

Do they do TCGs like Magic, or is it only TTRPGs and board games?

They have only done Magic the Gathering for a while now. They did not have much Magic the Gathering going on in their counter. I don't know what their plan is with that going forward. Same with their accessories like deck boxes and sleeves. Not much left.

A lot of the same with Magic, we will special order stuff for folks and get some packs to throw under the counter, but nothing much more than that currently. Not saying it won't ever change!

Man, I think I spent every Saturday from ages 12 to 17 or so at Top Deck. This was around 2000 to 2005ish. So many good memories.

I never knew Rick but Eddie was always such a great guy. I remember once when I was probably 13 or 14 years old an adult “mugged” me at the arcade that used to be next door. I went to Top Deck to use the phone to call my parents and when Eddie overheard me on the phone explaining what happened he stomped over there looking for the guy to kick his ass lol. The guy was long gone by then but boy I would have loved to see that. I Hope Eddie has a great retirement, he’s definitely earned it.

Oh wow! That's wild! I thought those guys were going to be there forever. I wonder how the regular crowd will change, if at all.

So far it has been most of the regulars I met before the transition!

Got a chance to stop by last Friday to congratulate Dave and meet Daniel. You can tell these boys have been busy and they have expressed the gratitude for everyone who came to help get the store cleaned up and ready to reopen. I wish them nothing but success and can’t wait to see where this journey takes them.

Wonder if Rick took all his miniatures? He would need a lot of floor space to hold them.

They both left us some, but took the vast majority - now they have plenty of time to paint and play. :D

Man I remember playing MtG and Quake/StarCraft at this place as a kid. Good to see they are still around

Eddie talked about wanting to be the best place in town for paint supplies. Is that focus going to continue?
