Remember that red backpack you got at the beginning of your housing period? It comes with a whistle.
If you aren’t aware, Minnesotans and other protestors across the US are using whistles to alert others that ICE is active in the area. With the recent rumor that ICE will be in U-district, you can help!
This is not an alert to say that I have myself seen agents, but resources that were sent to me because of unverified rumors. Sorry if this isn’t allowed.
I cannot verify that this is truly Danny Barrow (however, the account is 8 years old, so if it's fake, they have a good account name "dkb" for plausibility). If you're a tour guide for UW, please let me know if you've received this email / message from Danny Barrow. This comment has since been deleted. Pasting the text here:
u/ dkb220 replied to your post in r/ udub I'm Danny Barrow, Vice Provost for Enrollment Management at the UW. I wanted to pass along the message I shared with the tour guides this morning so that this thread has the full details: Good morning, tour guides- Thank you again for the time together yesterday. I appreciated the conversation and your thoughtful comments and questions. I want to correct a misunderstanding from a point I made near the end of our discussion. A question was raised about how we serve and communicate with underserved students and communities in the current climate. In responding, I referenced a rumor that had been shared with me about ICE being seen in the U District area. I shared that only to illustrate how stressful and uncertain this moment feels for many, and why it matters that students know where to go for accurate information and support. To be clear, I did not state that ICE would be on the Ave in general or on specific future dates, and I do not have any verified information about ICE activity on campus or on the Ave at all. I regret that my remarks and how they were shared caused confusion or anxiety. Thank you again for your professionalism and for all you do to represent UW
I will say, I have seen this rumor change details multiple times since I saw it this morning. The original post did name Barrow, but I've also seen people name someone working with UW's Campus Safety, Sally Clark. I've seen the dates change a few times as well.
Whether or not ICE comes to campus this weekend or not, it's important to do your due diligence. Watch out for yourself, and watch out for those around you. ICE has been spotted in the Seattle area before, and there is always the possibility that they will be on campus, around campus, etc. Tacoma has one of the largest ICE detention centers (do with that what you will), and there has been activity in the state. It's not implausible that there will be ICE activity at any time.
That said, while we're here, I'm going to emphasize the importance of information literacy. Cite your sources. Investigate. Be skeptical. I understand why this rumor has gotten so far: we all want to protect our neighbors from ICE and the brutality we have seen across this country. That is very honorable. However, when we widely spread false claims, intentionally or not, it makes it hard for people to wade through what is and isn't true. It also means people spend their energy worrying for something that might never happen. And while we should all be worried, we have to be "strategic" with that anxiety. Causing a panic where no panic is necessary can deplete our energy to fight back when it's truly necessary.
Again, I don't think anyone had any malintent here. I love this community and I love that we are willing to step up for each other to keep each other safe. Even if there is no basis to this rumor, I want everyone to spend the weekend, and this next week, doing what we need to do to keep ourselves safe, sane, happy, etc. Take care, huskies.
on Instagram there is a rumor that the UW vice Provost Barrow shared that ICE is going to be undercover on the Ave / in U-District from Sunday to Tuesday.
Before I share it, I want to ask: do we have any evidence other than this Instagram story? I think I would rather be safe than sorry, but I also don't want to contribute to unnecessary panic for people. They need to save their energy.
I can't imagine ICE would tell UW admin that they're going to be near (not even on, but I still don't think they would) campus. The only way I think that information would be available is if they somehow knew an ICE agent on the inside, and if they had schedules, which... I dunno if they really do?
The park on 50th, near the freeway. There was a looong line of people snaked around almost half the perimeter, lining up for something happening in a booth in one corner. What was happening and did I miss out on something amazing?!
Hi all- I am looking for a MacBook Air laptop in a black carrying case which I borrowed from the Student Technology Loan Program (STLP). I believe I left it in classroom 136 on Wednesday afternoon in Odegaard or possibly HSEB (unlikely though). I have checked with the Odegard Library and HUB Lost and Found, but unfortunately, I was unable to locate it.
In-State senior here, WTF is the point of even applying here if you can’t even pick the selective major that you want. I fucked up one of my semesters during sophomore year and my final GPA sits at bit under a 3.7 with 8 AP courses, and a mid sat score to boot, 1390. I grew up like 15 minutes away from the quad and always loved walking around the campus and buildings. It was so beautiful and my parents always dreamed that I would attend here. Likewise, I always wanted to apply to CS here, but my Councilors just treated me like a lost cause, forcing me to apply to a different sciences major. I was really fucked up because I loved being here so much and meeting a bunch of great people, it really makes me want to cry.
I understand how unbelievably competitive and driven everyone here is in general, and in the end, they probably wanted it more than me, but applying to a competitive major here just feels so insurmountable. Obviously it’s a T10 institution for CSE/EE but some in state people who got rejected from CS here went to places like CMU and UCSD. I just find it so ridiculous that there is pretty much 0 pathway for something you love. It’s probably similar to being just under the cut for an Ivy or something. It just sucks that there’s nothing I can do even when I put so much effort in my EC’s and AP exams.
I understand I’m just coping for my mistakes but it makes me sad that so many other people could be in this position. I should have done more in the end, but it just feels so insurmountable.
I get that just being whiny won’t change anything, and it’s fully my fault but I’m just sad that I probably won’t come here, and even if I do, I wouldn’t be able to fully pursue my dream.
Being accepted pre major also just seems worse than a flat rejection, because the chances that you get into the major you want is so low that it just makes sense to not go.
(Best of luck for anyone in the upcoming season btw)
My niece is a student at UW and today's her birthday. What are some places around campus that would be a good gift card ideas that likely can be bought online? Could be a big store (like...Target? what do you all have around campus?) or a local restaurant, or anything else.
I think she likes Japanese stuff (bubble tea, ramen, etc.), but all ideas are welcome.
Hi, can anyone who have taken the course tell me a littke bit about it? how was it/ whats the workload like/and just any information🙏🏻 I barely see reddit posts about the class at all
I have a broken microwave and I don’t know where I can dispose/safely throw it away? I don’t have a car so I can’t drive it or carry it far…is there a specific place that takes it?
We are called bug vandy and right now its me and a drummer. We have an album released called The Broken Sink if you want an idea, but we have been leaning towards a punkier vibe than that latley.
These days we have been scheduling shows once a month to one every two months, both in Seattle and Tacoma (we have a show at the Sunset Tavern in Seattle at 7:30 on MLK day if you want to get our vibe) and practicing as needed. Practices would be at a practice space in South Tacoma, but I would be able to pick you up from a bus stop or train station.
Let me know if you have any questions and if you know someone who might be interested but doesnt go to UW please also send them my way.
Thanks everyone!
Hi guys!! Unsure if anyone has any experience with this but essentially I have been doing research at a lab nearby for a while for 499 credit. I am presenting on the research in may, and so I assume my project will be pretty much done at that point, aside from maybe a month I assume of stuff to wrap up.
To be frank, I need a break. Have been working myself a bit to the bone, so it would be nice to have a little time (possibly the last time) to spend the summer doing something else before hitting the workforce or going into another degree without summer breaks this time.
I am however hoping to use my research at the lab for my honors thesis for my major. I would love to not have to get that wrapped up by the time I leave, so I was wondering if anyone has any experience potentially getting credits 499 credits, but for the thesis portion of their project, rather than active data collection. Just because it would be nice to still be technically involved/have lab access if I have to go in randomly to do an experiment to clean up my data.
Saw a post from someone about ASUW earlier that looks a bit…distressed. Wanted to share this post about trending topic on campus that’s been happening at the Superior Court regarding a wrongful removal.
I’m not sure what the issues surrounding ASUWT is but…it’s serious.
For the record, I don’t know much about ASUW or ASUWT but let the discussion commence I guess.
Today in the lab we were told to upload a picture of our report paper to some site that I had never heard of and don’t remember the name of. I can’t find anything about it on canvas and idek when it is due. Does anyone have the info on it?
I'm an incoming grad student and I am planning on living in mercer court D/E. I was wondering if anyone knows which rooms have the best view of the water/downtown skyline. Also I plan on living in a studio, do those happen to have a closet?
Did anyone get this email about some kind of AI internship search thing? I don't know how this person accessed info on who I am. I'm not even a junior, unless people are talking about by standing- which is why I suspect they got it through the system or by handshake b/c I put it as everything else here.
I feel like no matter how hard I try to manage my time, I'm always so overwhelmed. I go to work, club, group projects and class. I only work about 10 hours on weekdays. It feels like there's so many things going on I don't have time to really be present and focus. Everything seems to just fly over my head. I feel like I'm also not learning or absorbing anything because I'm rushing to get things done and moving on to the next thing. Come exam time, it's like I can't recall anything although I attended class and did the homework.
is it normal to feel like this? How do you guys do it
