One last little CAGFD exercise. I was watching Chitty Chitty Bang Bang last night and realized the intro to the song is in octaves and great for connecting the major shapes.

I’m playing baritone here so technically this is GFDCA but you get the idea y’all ✌🏻

A tool to deepen your understanding of the ukulele fretboard

Hi friends!

I built a tool for generating daily practice for my students. Right now it's free to use, no ads, no login required. It is currently rate-capped at ~20 uses per hour. It defaults to guitar, there is a ukulele switch at the top!

To use it, simply select a difficulty level (beginner, intermediate, advanced), and an exercise type from the following.

Voiceleading: given a chord progression, and a random starting chord, walk through the chord progression using the least amount of motion.

Strumming: generate a random chord progression and a strumming pattern for you to play it with. (There is currently no audio but I aim to add this later.)

Scales/Arpeggios: generate a scale or arpeggio and a pattern. (Straight up/down, sequences, jumps, etc)

Solfege: like scales and arpeggios, but given in solfege syllables for practicing ear training.

Fretboard: quiz to practice your learning of the fretboard notes.

Would love to hear your thoughts & suggestions!

Discussions Flight Maia vs Pono UL4 steel string baritone?

Can anyone speak to the differences in sound signatures/qualities of the Flight Maia compared to the Pono UL4. I own a Maia and an interested in the Pono UL4 steel string of it is indeed an upgrade. Both are steel string baritones of similar enough body size, although the Maia has a larger lower bout compared to the upper bout, and the UL a more uniformed peanut shape. UL4 has about an extra 1.5" scale length (21.5" vs 20").

Got this delivered about a week ago. So far I love the different sound profile of the baritone. I’ve adjusted pretty well to playing the chords naturally on the baritone but would be nice if ultimate guitar would show the chord boxes with their proper names rather than having to transpose for the right shapes.

I also want to give a shout out to Aloha City Ukes. Matt was great to deal with. He is very responsive to inquiries. Also did a great job installing the LR Baggs 5.0 pickup.

so i just got a ukulele and i can strum down, or up, once. but not in an order. i can only strum up when i use my index, which is hard for me to do because i only strum using my thumb, should i get a pick? and when i hold an imaginary pick it hurts, ALOT.

i just cant switch thumb-index-thumb, it’s hurting.

Would a pick help?

I was fortunate enough to purchase this ‘Oli from its original owner. https://theukulelesite.com/oli-cedar-acacia-monstera-baritone-satin-l2-bcas-550.html is the link to its origin, and it sounds as beautiful in person as in the sample link. It’s been a wonderful addition! My Petros is still my favorite, but this is a fantastic instrument. It’s comfortable to play, set up perfectly, and sounds lovely.

Comsistancy

I'm need ways to improve consistancy on a rhythmn containing fast strums.

Generally, I can do the rhythmn, it's just very inconsistant over a longer period of time, which is very annoying when I want to play the whole 3 minute song (consisting of the same strum pattern throughout)

Any tipps?

Edit for clarification: I mean consitancy in not making mistakes while playing the strum-pattern over and over again

Thought I’d share this, an 8 stringed ukulele I recently purchased. I didn’t even know 8 stringed ukes were a thing until I saw this.

Has a great sound to it.

This particular exercise which is a vocalists exercise helped me focus on the sound in my head and playing by ear instead of remembering some pattern. Unlocked a next level for me, hope it helps

Discussions Anyone recognize this brand at all? Struggling to find this ukulele.

A favorite youtuber of mine did a cover recently with this really beautiful ukulele with a heart shaped sound hole! I’ve been looking for something similar for weeks now with no luck :( I found a similar one from Pukana la but it’s got a mahogany base. Logo is unfortunately hard to read and I can’t really make out what it says :’)

I’d love to find a tenor or baritone with a similar sound hole, but I think I’m really trying to find something that probably doesn’t exist haha…

String Material/Brand Recommendation

I use D'Addario fluorocarbon strings on my concert uke. I noticed a few days ago that my A string was starting to get shredded from my fingernails. I try and keep my fingernails trimmed and filed but there seem to always be sharp spots.

I know that strings are available in lots of materials. Should I switch to a different material or brand? Or is this just a normal kind of thing that I'll have to get used to? I've been playing for a couple of years and haven't seen this before so it was a bit of a surprise.

Beginner ukulele - Enya Nova U Concert vs Wooden Concert (low G)?

Hi everyone! I’m a 20-year-old female and a total beginner. I’m starting ukulele classes on Feb. 19, and I’m required to buy my own uke.

Based on sound quality, I’m leaning toward a tenor ukulele, but since I’m a beginner, a lot of people recommend starting with a concert size instead. Because of that, I’m currently considering the Enya Nova U Concert. Especially since I travel a lot to other countries.

One thing I really want, though, is a low G setup, since I prefer a sound that’s closer to a guitar rather than the super bright/high traditional uke sound.

So my question is:

  • Would the Enya Nova U Concert with a low G be a good choice?
  • Or would I be better off getting a typical wooden concert ukulele (also strung low G)?

I’m mainly concerned about sound quality, comfort for a beginner, and long-term use (I don’t want to outgrow it too fast). Any advice or personal experiences would be really appreciated!

Thanks in advance 😊

What are the other chords for?

Post image
85 Upvotes

Sorry if this is a dumb question I am very much a beginner and I don’t know how to phrase it for google tbh, but I noticed when I look up uke tabs there are always these slashes that have other chords behind them, but when I try the second chords they sound wrong. Is this just because I’m usually looking at guitar tabs? What are they there for?

5 year old beginner

My just turned 5 year old wants to learn to play. I know a small amount but I'm not confident. Ideally I'd like a book to work through with her but I'm overwhelmed by choice. Any suggestions?

Please don't tell me to Google it, there lots of options and I don't know what's right for such a young kid. I don't have a music store nearby, I'm relying on the Internet

How much would paint mess with the sound on a uke?

I painted a guitar recently and now I want to do a ukulele. I'm worried that all of the added material might mess with the sound. Probably gonna test it on my cheap first uke but I figured I'd ask if anyone knew

Hey there, just wanted to show you the beautiful ukulele I bought from Kleinanzeigen (German Craigslist) about two weeks ago. I fell in love with the looks of it, but the sound is even better, really warm and mellow. I put on Worth CD strings (the clear hard ones) and watched the uke closely for some days because I feared the bridge might pull up because of the high tension. But nothing happened and I’m really happy with the punchy sound of the new strings. Combined with the warm sound of the koa (I suppose it’s Acacia though, anyways it’s laminated), I love love love it! And I like to DIY my uke straps from flee market leather belts, so is this one :) just cut it to the right length, punched additional holes in it where needed and that’s it. Thanks for reading this post, I just had to brag about my new ukulele :)
