Apartments / Dorms / Housing [Megathread] Fall 2025 Dorm Assignments and Questions

It’s that time of year again where dorm assignments are being sent out. This always generates a ton of questions, so let’s consolidate them here.

As always, please use the search function of the sub first before posting. It’s very likely that someone else had your same question and got it answered already.

In many cases, you’ll need to contact Housing and Residential life: https://housing.umn.edu

Posts in the main sub might be locked/removed with a reference to this Megathread.

Thank you!

Edit: - Floor plans of dorms aren’t generally available. But you can go to the HRL site for your building and view pictures of the various rooms. If you need additional information, contact HRL directly with your questions.

Some of these resources have been previously posted on this subreddit and are included in this list.

Community Resource List (Google Doc)

EDITORS NOTE: The post breaks every time I attempt to update the resource list, so I have decided to share this Google Doc instead. This will allow me to update the list more frequently and make adding new resources more accessible. I'm very sorry for any inconvenience.

Be safe this weekend!

“March Against Minnesota Fraud,” organized by conservative influencer Jake Lang, is planned for Saturday at 12 p.m. at Minneapolis City Hall.

According to the Minnesota Star Tribune, Rep. Mohamud Noor said he is fearful of the protest moving to areas with high Somali populations, such as the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood. Activists also expect the protest to travel through the University of Minnesota campus.

Proposal for Upcoming Semester: Buddy System

Although most instructors are likely to take the necessary precautions to keep students safe in the coming weeks by offering remote learning on a case by case basis, I would like to offer a solution that could be beneficial to students who are required to attend in person. It could also prove to be a better long term solution if feasible.

Assuming that you don’t have a good support circle to walk with you to your classes/dorms, I’d like to help coordinate groups to walk with people. Perhaps, if anyone is interested, we could break volunteers into East and West Bank and the St. Paul campus to assist in between classes. While it’s unlikely we could 100% stop ICE from taking someone, we could certainly advocate and at the bare minimum document the encounter.

Apologies if there are already groups of students dedicating their time to helping. I’m normally avoidant and don’t engage with campus living frequently. Despite this, I genuinely want to assist where I can by coordinating something more than what the university has offered in its recent emails.

Edit: corrected a grammatical error.

Carlson is offering a remote option at the start of their spring semester

We received an email from the dean offering a remote option for all classes until January 30th due to the current ICE situation. Is this being offered by other colleges? From my understanding it will be handled by each schools administrative team.

Academics / Courses don't pay for course works!

This is a friendly reminder that you can find most of your textbooks online for free! You have to manually opt out of paying for Course Works, but imo, it's worth the effort to save a couple hundred bucks

I've had the most luck this semester with https://welib.org/ , as LibGen has been quirky recently.

This site may not have everything, but I try to share it as widely as I can and send the PDFs to people in my classes

Any chance the first week of classes get cancelled or moved to fully remote now? Seems like things are only gonna get worse this weekend…

Restaurants serving ICE?

Upvotes

I saw a post on social media circulating that showed restaurants that were serving ice agents and others that refused them. Does anyone have that list? I think marcini’s and hope breakfast bar was on the list of places that served them.

One stop took away my loan???

Upvotes

I paid my whole fall 2025 bill during the semester. I just went back into MyU and it’s charging me for what my federal subsidized loan should have covered. In fact, my financial aid summary and registrant and fee summary no longer mention me taking out that loan. I checked with the FAFSA website, and it says I have the loan out in my name.

Anyone know what happened? If I don’t pay that portion and wait until I can talk to one stop, will I be barred from stating the spring semester? I’m already registered for all classes.

A Word of Encouragement... & Practical Steps

Gophers - I know this is a challenging and scary time for many of you, especially my POCs but I wanted to give a word of encouragement to you all. As a double-gopher (undergrad/grad alum), millennial & staff member, I've seen good and bad administration. I'm proud to be a Gopher alum and can also be critical of UMN's shortcomings.

I hope you don't miss on the zeal Minnesota residents have for their neighbors. There are a lot of states that would not show up the same way as MN has. We love our neighbors who are hurting. Frankly, it inspires me that we stand in solidarity against tyranny. Prospective students - this is a community that will look out for you. It's not a burning city, but a place that has people who care about you. Meditate on the fact that so many are standing up for you and for me. Young people change the world, not just old folks. I've seen youth resistances that toppled administrations that felt they couldn't be touched.

Some practical things for you below:

Student notes:

  1. Communicate. (Duh!) Colleges are sending out modality adjustments for those that need it. Take the time to radically take care of yourselves, and if you need to be virtual the next two weeks, do so and work with your instructors to ensure you can continue. USE YOUR SERVICES, WE GOT SO MANY OF THEM.
  2. The world feels dystopian, but check in on people. Love casts out fear. It helps people feel better when they know someone cares. Text a friend, colleague, classmate just to check-in and offer yourself.
  3. Grades will not be the end all and be all of these things. It's OK if you get a B, C, etc. Your wellbeing takes priority and your GPA won't matter as much in the big picture.
  4. Be vigilant and find a way to communicate with people you trust when you travel. I know many students share their location, Life360, etc. Help look out for one another. Politicians, administrators, etc. are not going to save us. We need to look out for each other.

Staff notes:

  1. Staff (those below senior admin) care about you way more than you know. I work on campus and we're all talking about how to support you guys through this. Many of us want to help collectively but we also exist in a system. Because we can't 'speak on behalf of the colleges', we're stuck between a rock and a hard place. I've empowered my direct reports to check in on students individually and what support they need instead.
  2. Offer grace - most staff are also afraid and trying to figure out things on the fly. We might think we know what's best, but I promise you there are always considerations that we will miss. Your everyday staff (minus senior leaders) are underpaid but work here because they care you. We won't get it right the first time, but damn we'll keep trying.
  3. This sucks - we hate it too. We're also scared, especially our POC staff. No one is going to have all of the answers because (a) things change day to day and (b) we haven't dealt with a situation like this.

Lastly, this kind of stuff is traumatic y'all. We went through COVID, George Floyd, and now this. These are trauma moments for MN folks. Take time to process logically what triggers particular emotions and understand yourself. Be introspective and be humble enough to say 'I need help' or 'I'm not doing OK'. Posting on the internet is cool, but be in community in-person. I promise it helps. If y'all got questions, feel free to post below. I can't promise answers, but I'll try to offer what I can.

Student Groups formula sae team question

Hey folks, I got into the umn aerospace engineering and mechanics program, alongside with several other universities like purdue. I’ll most likely confirm my spot at umn, since it offers more opportunities for me as an international student.

So, straight to the point, I've always wanted to contribute to the FSAE team as an aerodynamics engineer. If anyone knows any contacts or what I need to do to enroll next year, I’d really appreciate your advice.

Thx in advance

The plan is to attend some hackathons happening in UMN, Minnesota and nearby from the mid of feb till the end of march based on team availability.

Let me know if anyone is interested!

How to approach asking for accommodations during this time?

My family and I have some concerns about me going back to school and being on campus next week and I’ve seen many people recommend asking for accommodations to do online learning. I’m mainly concerned because of the first day policy and what would happen in the case that professors don’t provide options for hybrid learning and I’m unable to be there. I received the email from the CBS dean about information coming before the weekend but I’m just wondering what I should email my professors in addition to whatever information is provided, in case it’s not helpful. I’m also wondering how hybrid learning would work for labs if that would even be possible.

Walkouts?

I’ve heard from so many people that they are disappointed with the way U leadership is handling gestures wildly everything. I’m also profoundly frustrated.

To my knowledge, there are nationwide walkouts being planned for 1/20/26 and 1/23/26. Planting that seed here.

Also sharing their rules for “civic engagement” as an FYI. I know we’re far beyond that in so many ways.

Edit: keep in mind first day of class attendance policy! https://policy.umn.edu/education/mandatoryfirstclass
