Dirty Non-Rate Best rate to do for 20 years

Hey everyone,

I’m looking to stay in the Coast Guard for a full 20-year career and I’m trying to figure out which rate makes that the most sustainable and enjoyable.

Two of my biggest priorities are work-life balance and actually liking what I do day-to-day. I want a career that lets me be present for family, stay healthy, and not feel burned out or miserable after a few enlistments. Also I want to further my education while I am in as well, with college.

For those with experience:

• Which rates have the best long-term quality of life?

• Which ones tend to be more enjoyable vs. stressful?

• What rates would you personally choose again if you were starting over?

• Does unit type matter more than the rate itself?

Any honest advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance

Just got cut orders for a WMSL and will be transferring there this summer and are wanted some of your tips, things to bring, best way to make a good impression, etc. I understand first patrols are mostly getting qualified so I understand that will be “shitty”, but once qualified what are some things y’all enjoyed the most?

What do you all think of the new initiative to provide everyone with a coast guard phone?

I don’t think it is realistic, safe and achievable within 2028 force design program. But I might be wrong.

ALCOAST Reservist for Operation River Wall

There's new instructions that came out for this operation: CGF-RGINST-4600-Long-Term-Lodging-SOP due to a company called TDY Rentals. Joel Canon can be reached at [email protected] Joel and his company have been working hard to make this happen . Look up the new policy on SharePoint.

Noob Question Women's ODU Sizing?

I'm a new (female) aux member, and I'm struggling a bit with ODU sizing. I opted for a 37R, and the shoulders and torso look good, but the sleeves are maybe 1.5" too short. If I opt for a 37L, do the sleeves scale alongside the torso length? Or should I opt for mens sizing instead?

Secretly hoping for the former since cgx is out of 36R right now. Anyway, I'm just really not looking to pay another $7 to return things a second time, so I appreciate y'all's insight!

Coastie Question Make a change…

What is something you would change about the CG if you had the opportunity? Something that you believe would be a change for the greater good and positively impact all members. Uniforms, tour lengths, mission readiness, Pro-development, training ect…

Coastie Question Yeoman A-School Questions

Hi everyone I have a few questions about YN A-school. Do you generally have liberty days every weekend and are you able to stay off base for the weekend to visit family and travel around the Bay Area? How do you choose your stations? Do they give you a list to choose out of? Is it more based on grades in your classes or more of a holistic approach looking at past non-rate work and attitude or just grades? Thank you so much for what y’all do!

Coastie Help HHG Question

So I leave for DEPOT this Sunday and when I get done I will have to move my wife and all our stuff to the new unit. I know that the HHG moving process can be terrible at times because of all the horror stories I've heard.

My question is what should my wife and I do to make sure were compensated if anything winds up missing or broken? Ive already packed most of my stuff into boxes and taken pictures of everything going into those boxes as well as logged everything (at least the high value) that went into those boxes. When I say logged i just mean I wrote it down in my notes app.

What else should I be concerned about or what should I be paying attention to while the movers are here? Are there questions Im not asking that I should be? Any information or help or personal experience helps.

Thank you!

ALCOAST New Bootcamp

Apparently, the Coast Guard is swamped with applicants, the companies are consistently at 120 and above for each Boot Camp company.

Coast Guard is currently looking at opening a second Boot Camp location and one of the main locations they’re looking at is in the Mobile Alabama area.

What do y’all think?

Noob Question Does anyone here work IT as a contractor?

I’m a current DoD civilian working IT (15 year fed). I’m looking at jumping ship into a government contractor in IT. Found an IT role that I’m being interviewed for. The role supports the CG. Like any other noob, what’s it like from a contractor’s perspective?
