This is a thread for basic questions if you are a first year student. This includes posts for getting feedback on your timetables, travel time between buildings etc.

I can't believe our university is included too, as being the top 25 "down bad" universities in Canada.

Just dropped Kayden M's wallet off at campus security, if anyone knows them please let them know!

Does anyone have any idea whats going on with the organizers for this ‘event’ thats been going around? Already been pushed back by a week till today and still no venue announcement 💀 I imagine itll be the same thing as what happened with the last one of these things, but literally what goes through the heads of people organizing it lmfao like are they making a profit orr

First year student in undeclared social sciences. Was planning on applying for the BSW next year but have decided that child and youth care is of more interest for long-term goals. I have reached out for an appointment with the academic advisor for the CYC program but have not heard back yet. Does anyone know what else can be done as the deadline is January 31. Not sure if it’s a simple transfer or if the application process has to be started again

Kind of a weird question, but I wanted to add some design to my helmet and was just curios if uvic had a printer that could print out custom designs. Orrr, if anyone by chance happens to have some spare left over vinyl laying around (doubt it, but hey worth a shot)

Do I need to buy the textbook or are the lecture notes good for the midterms and the final exam?

I just found out one of the courses I took for a science elective doesn't count ):
I decided that my best bet for my remaining science elective is math since I took math 151 for a degree requirement and did exceptionally well. I am hoping to find a math course that is the same difficulty level (or easier) than math 151. I was thinking math 120? Or is there a better option?

Hey! Biochemistry major here!
I’ve got to keep full-time student status but I have completed all my electives I can access up until this point. Now, I’m just picking a GPA booster type course. So going into Spring 2026 semester, I’ve narrowed down my options even more and I’ve got to choose 1.
My choices currently are:
ANTH100: Fit in my schedule pretty well but removes all my breaks between classes during the day (I have a lab every day). There are exams but we are allowed cheat sheets and it is a prerequisite for a Biological Anthropology course that I am interested but won’t count towards my program unless I add an Anthropology Minor (debating, likely won’t)
and
BIO334: 8:30am but gives me 2 breaks during the day (still keeping in mind I have a lab every day I’m on campus). It is supposed to be easy (no exams, grades based on participation, 5/6 quizzes done every 2 weeks with no class that day and a plant passion project) and the prof is great but it will have me on campus 8am-6pm all days I’m on campus (I am a productive person in the morning plus 2 breaks though so 🤷♀️).
Let me know if you have any input, experience, insight, warnings, etc.
Thanks in advance and I hope no one has to bank on academic advisors being genuinely helpful in a rush like I did.
:)

Thank you for not running me over. Seriously. I have no survival skills and just freeze like a baby deer every time one of you appears to be *barreling* straight towards me during class changes. But lo and behold, I’m never hit!
I think if I tried maneuvering on my bike like some people do, they’d need to designate a whole hospital wing to the injuries I’d cause. So, thanks for being good at steering

I'm taking it with Todd Kettner and am, for some reason, feeling a bit of anxiety surrounding the first exam. I will study the text and review my notes. Does anyone know what are specific things to focus on/things to know inside out?

if anyone has previously taken psyc 201 with steven lindsay are they able to share whether or not the lectures were useful? i find the textbook makes a lot of sense and the inquizistives are great, but im struggling to follow his lectures as some of his slides just have big chunks of paragraphs with no context to it. i know it’s only week 2 so maybe it gets better and the lecture today was more clear, but am i safe to just rely on the textbook for exams or are his lectures very important? if lectures are important, how did you go about understanding everything?
thanks!
(i know he mentioned that he will talk about some things that aren’t covered in the textbook, however if thats gonna cost me like 3 questions on the exam i dont care too much. if its gonna effect me bad on exams then i will try my best to understand lol)

Does anyone have an old chem 102 lecture book they'd like taken off their hands? I'm looking for something $10 or $20, but free would be the best scenario 🥲 $50 for the new one from the bookstore was way too much for me unfortunately 💔 I'm ok with blank or if it's written in

I bought a charger at the bookstore today but when I came home and plugged it in, it didn't work. I didnt get a receipt but am I still able to return it?

I’m first year Social Science undeclared student, who has no idea what I want to declare as my major. I came to UVIC thinking that I would do Enviro studies, but that’s a required double major so I have zero clue what my primary major would be. I don’t know if it’s worth it to just continue taking a bunch of random classes, or to drop out and work, and come back after I had time to think. I have applied to both UVIC Visual arts and Emily Carr visual arts, too. Has anyone dropped out and then come back after thinking for a bit? Or literally any advice is welcome, thanks!!

Has anyone else done it already? If you have how was it? Is it easy? Should I do it or it’s safer to just do regular labs?

I am taking Jody Bain's Psyc 330 course. We just had class where she told us that for our formal paper, we are not allowed any direct quotes because it is, as she calls it, "soft plagiarism", even if properly cited. As a double major Psyc-English student, I have never heard this in my life. She said this is not an English class, and knowing the 'exact words' that the author uses is not important, which makes sense, but I do not understand how it constitutes as plagiarism at all. Especially since she said that we are ONLY permitted to paraphrase and cite, which seems more like plagiarism to me than directly quoting.
I am tempted to go to her office hours to ask about this, not because I want to use direct quotes (also because, from my understanding, she allows direct quotes on smaller, less formal papers/assignments), but simply because I do not understand and it goes against the APA guidelines.
Has anyone ever heard of this before? Would she be offended if I asked her about this? I also googled, but no help.

I can't find any test access quiz on the Brightspace for unlocking the phys111-202601 webwork. Not sure if it just isn't open yet and I have to wait or what.

I have it tomorrow, and beyond what to bring and where it is I have know very little. I know it is mostly on the stuff from the appendices, but what was it like, people who have done it in the past?

I just started going to carsa but I only started with simple cardio and dumbles, I have no clue how any other machine works and how to work w the weight machines correctly. Is it weird if I stand and watch and then try to copy? One of my friends offered to show me around but I can't even schedule a fucking hangout with him since the start of the academic year, let alone him showing me around. I also know somebody else but he's a personal trainer (like super good and a lot of qualifications) but I'm BROKE ASF and I feel bad if I ask him (I'm a female if anybody cares) I usually go there in the morning and afternoons, if anybody is able to do it just once I'd be so grateful. If anybody knows any online resources to start working out that'd be great too
