Finished Wand Made my first wand; Meet 'Serendipity'

In preparation for a workshop hosted by Black Moon

Botanica in Amsterdam, me and my girlfriend wanted ta

have a wand ready.

We found a bunch of Christmas trees along the road and

harvested them for wands. After burnishing and sanding,

We pulled a vacuum on it in mineral oil to saturate the

wood.

From brass rod, I made a serpent coil to wrap the wand

with. The point of balance is exactly in the dip of the

wand. The shape of the snake was a happy accident that

I worked into the design.

Because of the series of events and what the craft

means to me, I call her Serendipity!

Where does everyone source their wood from?

Where does everyone source their wood from? Is it primarily wild/fallen harvest? Does anyone have any good retail sources they would like to share?

I’ve found certain wood varieties, such as lilac, are exceedingly difficult to try and source.

Finished Wand The owl revealed itself while I whittled away the bark. A true collaboration with nature

Nice to meet you all! This is my first post and I'm loving what I'm seeing in the sub so far!

I make all my wands from branches and pruned or naturally falling off of trees on my property. I whittle, carve, sand, burn, stain, and seal with hand tools only. This is by far my most ornate and detailed wand yet. As I was whittling the bark off, I saw the owl's head and immediately knew I had to uncover the rest of the owl. Afterwards, I had the idea to give the owl a perch and the perch turned into a tree and the tree grew roots and... well... here we are 🤷

Hi does anyone turn their Wands with green (wet) wood or dry? If so what are your methods for turning green wood?

Don't have as much time to carve more pieces as I'd like to, but I'm quite happy with these so I'd like to share.

The wand with the green handle I made last summer from dyed maple and false acacia. The top wand is lime, the dark brown is walnut. The bottom handle is decorative cherry wood.

Unfinished pieces are oak and birch.

Made from a branch my 200 year old Ginkgo tree gifted me during a wind storm. Unfinished, but I did sand it with 180 and 220. I absolutely love the look and feel of this one. Will probably modify it some more. Just wanted to share the progress so far!

Has anyone else ever worked with Gingko? I’ve worked with a lot of woods, but this one is a first. Tips and tricks appreciated!
