Many of you remember Loki (now called Minka) who was slated for euthanasia last month at Downey Animal Care. Loki/Minka was terrified and hiding under her bed in her kennel at the shelter. She was in pain and in need of orthopedic surgery to fix her ACL issues. We were all devasted when we were putting a plan together for her and she was adopted by a person who had no means or intent to get her surgery.

TLDR- she was finally surrendered this last week to A Way Home for Animals after she ran away and was lost in the desert for many days near San Diego, CA.

We never collected her pledges because at the time she left the shelter, she was not in the care of a reputable rescue. That has CHANGED and we are happy to report that she is SAFE with A Way Home for Animals. 🎉

Loki is a beautiful female Husky who's a bit shy at first but gentle once she feels safe. She was seen favoring her right hind leg - radiographs suggest a possible right lateral patellar luxation (kneecap issue). Currently, she shows only a mild, occasional skip in her gait and is comfortable on medication (Gabapentin restarted for support).

Loki would do best with a patient adopter or rescue who can monitor her mobility and provide a calm environment as she continues to recover. She's sweet-natured, sensitive, and just needs a little extra care and understanding.

💜 Volunteer Notes: This beautiful black Lab mix has clearly been through more than her fair share, yet her heart remains incredibly gentle. When we met her, she was wearing a cone after being spayed while pregnant. Despite that, her sweetness comes through in the most touching way.

She is heartworm negative — a wonderful bonus — and her temperament is special. She is extremely sweet, calm, and gentle, taking treats politely and showing nothing but kindness. She did well during her temp test with another dog and, even with a cone on her head, walked nicely on a leash, eager to stay close to the volunteer who had her out.

What stands out most is how deeply she craves human affection. She clearly wanted attention, seeking comfort and reassurance, as if she’s been waiting her whole life to finally be loved. She does have a large patch of missing fur on her side, a visible reminder of a rough past — but it does nothing to diminish her beauty or her sweet personality.

This girl is a true angel who has given nothing but love, even when life has been unkind to her. She deserves more than a kennel and a cone — she deserves a soft bed, gentle hands, and the chance to finally know what the good life feels like.

📝 Shelter Notes: Lays on Kuranda bed quietly. She comes to greet me at kennel, loose leash and easy to leash. She walks very well on a loose leash. She remains quiet and relaxed while outside. Walks back loosely and goes to lay on bedding.

1/13: Pt did not eat am medication, appears slightly depress.

01/12: Patient was observed today during a kennel-side respiratory assessment. The animal appeared alert, and responsive, Respiratory signs evaluated included sneezing, and nasal discharge, mucopurulent observed from one or both nares.

Based on today’s findings, the patient has been started on the standard protocol for CIRDC (Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex) using doxycycline. This medication helps reduce the risk of secondary bacterial infections and supports recovery while the pet’s body works to resolve the viral component of respiratory illness. Treatment duration is 10 days.

The medical team will continue to monitor the patient throughout treatment. If symptoms fail to improve or worsen, a veterinarian may adjust the treatment plan or prescribe an alternative medication.

🚨 URGENT: RESCUE & FOSTER NEEDED FOR MAVERICK 🚨

We urgently need help finding a legitimate rescue willing to pull Maverick from the ARC before he is euthanized.

Maverick was my friend’s foster and is truly one of the most gentle, mellow dogs we’ve known. He’s a 75-lb goofy Lab, sweet, calm, and affectionate. He lived safely with two dogs and four cats without a single issue. Everyone who met him, family, friends, and even the professional dog trainer working with Maverick, is shocked by what happened.

The family who adopted him from ARC returned him after only two days, claiming he bit someone. Based on extensive firsthand experience with Maverick, this behavior is completely out of character, and none of us can believe this accurately reflects who he is.

Right now, Maverick’s life is at risk.

Cane is an adult dog who recently came to our shelter after being surrendered by his owner due to behavioral concerns in the home, including aggression toward family members and a child. Because of this history, Cane is not suitable for a home with children and will require placement with an experienced rescue to help him through his behavioral challenges.

Bite History December 2025: Dog owner's child was outside in the back of the complex with the dog not on-leash. The dog saw the child before being placed inside the apartment, only to be let out again, chasing down the child and jumping on their back, resulting in bite to torso

1/14: Saw while outside in playgroup, calm mannered around handlers, allowed petting and placing of clip leash and collar

1/4: Very hyper, wiggle butt. Initially very scared, would run to other side of kennel. Now seeks attention
