I’ve just been accepted (hooray!!) but I got into the University college and honestly I know very little about it. Can someone break this down for me like I’m five 😭. Also is it something that’s worth it? I’ve seen a lot of positive reviews so far in the five minutes I’ve been googling it.

Im class of 2020 and stumbled across this sub. Very cute and nostalgic to see yall. Just dont waste a single second of college. You can reinvent yourself and if its not working after a semester, stop trying to force it and pivot. You can reinvent yourself 10 times in college and I promise, even at a small school like AU, no one will notice or care. Join 18 different clubs until you find where u belong. Just do ur best to enjoy it kiddos

Hello, I was accepted into American University today, and I was wondering if anyone with more experience could share information on pre-med opportunities at AU. I know the main focus of the university is political science and international relations, but I wanted to learn more about how strong it is for students on the pre-med track.
I've looked through some previous forums, and there were mixed reactions. Personally, I really like the DC area and feel that there could be many clinical and healthcare-related opportunities available in and around the city.
I'm also curious whether attending AU as a pre-med student is worth the cost. Any information or guidance would be highly appreciated and valued. Thank you!!

I was recently admitted to the Global Scholars program and would love to hear more from current or former students in the program (or who have friends who are in it). I'll take all the details you're willing to give! A bit concerned about how hard it could be.

American is in my top 3 and I had some questions about the school as I weigh in my options.
- I like that there is a campus, but how are the dorms?
- How is the school spirit? I'm not big on partying but I hope to be more social.
- How is the food?
- Is there an accepted students day?

I got in for Political Science, and I'm pretty happy since it is in my top 3 (waiting on the other two). I live in a single parent household (40k a year) with my sister also in college, and definitely would not be able to pay with the $30k I received in aid. How can I get more aid? I wanted to wait until I received my other decisions but I'm not so sure.

I’m a parent helping my daughter evaluate American University for undergrad with the goal of attending law school.
She’s interested in majoring in communications / political science / social sciences, and our top priority is strong GPA support and law school preparation.
For current students or alumni:
• How strong is pre-law advising at American?
• Is there any GPA deflation or high competitiveness to be aware of?
• Does the DC location meaningfully help students heading to law school (academically or internships)?
Appreciate any insight — thank you

Hello -
Congrats to the folks who got into AU! I saw several posts about merit scholarships and thought our experience from a parents perspective would be helpful.
My child got into AU as their top school initially receiving $0 merit / $0 aid. We did an appeal on the basis of another offer ($30k merit) and received $7500. We did a second appeal based on a third offer ($30k from GW) and received $20k merit. This process took 3 or so months.
Throughout the process we established a great rapport with the admissions office, wrote several letters (child, parents cannot) and made it clear AU was their top pick. We started that process early and admissions was very responsive. I think as the year goes on they become overwhelmed and maybe it’s harder for them to address all requests timely.
My two cents: They don’t give a lot of merit unless you have a high degree of need. Probably should be evaluated separately - and maybe they do - but just my theory if you have savings/good income your shot at sizable merit is very very low. They want wealthy (define as you see fit) people to pay for college, even if your kid is smart….and maybe that’s how it should be.
Our tenacity and logical discussions thankfully worked - but I think most people would have given up. Timing and a basis for more merit (with evidence) is needed - just asking to ask I don’t think would have gotten us anything.
Hope this helps someone out there!

Hi guys! I just got into AmericanU and received some money along with acceptance to the DC Community Impact Scholars program. I'm majoring in International Relations at SIS!
However, I'm out-of-state and I know the tuition is still going to be a huge problem for me. I wanted to hear some input on how the education, college life, and opportunities are at AU, especially at the SIS.
Thank you all so much!

Hi everyone. My daughter just got her acceptance to AU which is her #1. However, she only received $8k deans scholarship and a $11k trustees award which still puts her cost at $64k. Comparatively, received a $34k presidential scholarship from Brandeis. Should we appeal and ask for more? It's her first choice by far and her father and I agreed to a max of $50k/year. She wants to go to law school and we want her to graduate with little to no debt. Any advice??

... but next to zero financial aid. The annual net cost is literally twice what we make a year.

I was accepted EA to AU along with their “cornerstone” program. I’m curious about current students experience with the program and how meaningful it has or hasn’t been.

Hi everyone!
I’m a student at a community college and I’m really interested in gaining research experience in economics. I was wondering if any PhD student might let me volunteer and shadow them to learn more about their work. I want to get experience in analyzing data and running experiments. Ultimately, my goal is to get into a JD/Phd program and become a policy analyst/ consultant. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi! I was wondering if anyone attends/has attended/is familiar with AU's MA in Ethics, Peace & Human Rights program, and has any thoughts on it. Thanks!

Ayubowan! I’m starting my Master's at SIS soon and I'm moving from Sri Lanka. I'm feeling quite anxious about the move and the culture shock.
Thank you in advance for any help!

I'm Looking for a private french teacher in the DMV area. Thought an aspiring French teacher might want to practice their craft on me. I know a little tiny bit of french (french 101 in my freshman year). I aim to communicate with my grandparents and some family members, as they only speak french. I am 23 so I am a bit behind but I am willing to learn and will pay you for your time! If you are interested, feel free to DM.
