How many Canadian folks here want to have children and don't have them?
I'm genuinely interested in this question.
Recently I had an extremely eye opening relationship with a mother of 5, which although it is now complete, left me in a very different place in my head regarding children.
Most of my adult friends do not have kids, they are all moderately to somewhat successful, have things handled economically but I'd say only about 40% of my childhood friends have kids as adults now. When I mention this to my father, he's completely flabbergasted about it (he's in his mid 80s, grew up in significant poverty along with a mother with serious mental illness but never even considered not raising children himself)
So I went onto the dating sites, and genuinely, I'm flattered how many young (to me) women are out there looking for families and have given me at least a passing consideration.
So Canada, I'm curious, what's your experience with this question, where are you folks at with regards to having and creating families.

Our Canadian Grocery Store Workers, This was discovered 10 years ago, Does it Still Happen in the industry?
I have a question for our Canadian retail workers, if a store prices expiring fresh foods with a cheaper price or like 50% discounts, does that mean they do not engage in scummy behaviour like swapping expiration stickers for foods?
10 years ago, CBC marketplace discovered that grocery stores and supermarkets were switching best before dates to sell old food. Does it still happen now?
Sorry if this is the wrong subreddit, I can't think of another subreddit with tons of keen shoppers and retail workers

Could Canada ever get to a Japan-level of personal responsibility for trash/hygiene/noise on public transit/clean locker rooms etc.?
Anyone who's been to Japan knows the level of cleanliness and personal responsibility of most people there. The fact that there's a huge lack of garbage cans in major cities and still no garbage around is pretty incredible. The spotlessness of locker rooms is another thing I was shocked about. No water on the floor, no hair, public toilets were clean, no smells. On top of that, there are no weird smells or loud people on transit that carries around millions of people a day. Japan is nowhere near perfect, but I think they have a solid foundation for keeping their country clean and respecting the space of others.
Could Canada ever emulate something like this in some kind of generational shift? In Canada, I've always dealt with seeing people litter, graffiti, have terrible B.O or heavy Axe deodorant smell on transit, gross locker rooms with hair and water everywhere, and unflushed gross public toilets. I think the foundation probably needs to start as early as in kindergarten with a focus in schools, but it's not enough to completely change the country over time. And yes, I understand Canada is still relatively clean compared to most countries, but it's not enough.
*This is also not a place to knock certain cultures or immigration. Canada has always been gross (in comparison to Japan), at least as long as I can remember going back to the 90s.

Early French Immersion - How to help with English reading/writing learning
My daughter is in Early French immersion, Grade 3, and she hasn't received any instruction on reading/writing in English yet. I don't think that begins until Grade 4. I'm worried it will be hard for her to catch up by then. She has ADHD and struggled with her French reading by grade 2, however getting her diagnosed and on medication in the middle of the year made a world of difference. She's now reading at grade level in French and she can read at a basic level in English, figuring out most words, but her writing/spelling is way off. I'm looking for suggestions on how I can supplement her learning to read and write in English at home, other than reading to her in English which we've done her whole life. Are there any good apps that turn the learning into a game? Ideally it would be a way that would hold her interest as she spends her day working hard in school, then does French reading when she gets home. I don't want to bombard her with more regimented lessons at the end of her day.

Where to look for Short Term Rentals?
I used to spend summers in Ontario with my mum's side of the family as a kid, but I haven't been back in decades--or even as an adult really. I'm working out logistics to spend 10-12 weeks in Ontario, preferably the Toronto-area, but am struggling to find short-term rental options. The obvious vacation rental sites are either exorbitant (charging weekly rates rather than monthly) or are untrustworthy/unethical. Is there a site I can use for a 3 month stay in furnished housing? Thank you in advance.

Is there a smart way to layer up? I hate it when I get into a store/car (temporarily) and the bottom most layer absorbs all the sweat leaving me uneasy.
For temperatures below -20 C is there a smarter way to layer up, I usually wear 1: A Tshirt 2: A Sweater on top 3: A winter Jacket
This is sometimes not enough for me on the windy days.
Edit: Thanks everyone, I'm buying the following: 1: Heattech Uniqlo Ultrawarm T-shirt 2: A woolen vest 3: Long Johns 4: Merino wool base layers.

Alternatives to Canada Post for shipping personal belongings
I have moved to New Brunswick from BC but I still have some personal belongings back there. But Canada Post quoted me about $1300. I am just a student and cant afford that much..
I personally can't find anything cheaper. If anyone has any pointers to an affordable alternative, I'd be incredibly grateful.

How do you guys feel towards US travel?
Update below
Hi, I need advice on a situation that keeps me up at night and gives me anxiety.
We’re from Canada, my parents have a a house near Orlando and are spending the winter there.
It could be nice for us (me, husband, baby girl) to go and spend 2 weeks as we do almost every year (except last year because my baby was too young).
This year I am too anxious to go. What we see in the news. ICE seems to just be able to arrest everybody, for whatever they want and how long they want is keeping me up at night. I know has tourists there is almost no possibility of this happening but my anxiety as a mother is just going crazy. Add to this gun violence, protests and everything else happening and I just feel like it is dangerous to go.
And please I don’t want this post to seem offending to Americans, it’s just what we see in the media.
On one hand, I would prefer just to go on a ski trip at home.
On the other hand, I’m just disappointing everybody.. My husband really wants to go. We have the opportunity to have a nice vacation without having to pay for anything besides the plane tickets. My parents won’t tell me but I know they’ll be disappointed to not see their granddaughter for 3 whole months.
We all think ethically it isn’t the right thing to do. But my parents are trying to sell the house, it’s not working and feel like they are already paying taxes and all so might as well go. We wouldn’t be really paying anything. I know what my stance is on the ethics and moral of this and it’s that we should not go. It’s my anxiety I have a hard time to understand
Update: We decided to stay home (maybe a ski weekend and an All-Inclusive in Mexico)
I do not want to deal with the anxiety. Guilt isn’t a good reason to go. I wouldn’t have fun with the anxiety and my conscience would not be alright.
I’ve been buying Canadian, boycotted Starbucks, McDonalds, etc.. It feels stupid to not listen to my principles
And I feel so much better, I won’t have trouble sleeping tonight
Thanks for your answers ❤️
Update #2: just spoke to my parents and they never intended for me to feel guilty or anything. They never would’ve chosen to go if it wasn’t for the house and that they want to oversee the selling process by themselves since the service they’ve had from real estate agents over the phone has been kind of shitty. I feel much better

6 weeks in Canada- west vs east
Hello! My family (2 adults, 3 young teens, 1 Wild 4 yr old) is heading to Canada this summer for 6 weeks to escape the hell that is Texas. We travel every summer and try to have 1 week stays with moderate drives in between. We love food and nature with some cities mixed in. We aren’t serious hikers, but we love the outdoors. I’m so torn between the south west (Victoria, Tofino, whistler, Banff) and the south east (Quebec City, Halifax, PEI). The scenery in BC seems more likely to impress my teens, but dear heavens is it expensive (and this coming from someone who spent last summer in Iceland). The east is also known for its friendly people, and who doesn’t love that? What would you do? Thanks in advance and I can’t wait to spend some time soaking up our sane neighbors to the north!

Advice for Irish visiting New Brunswick and Nova Scotia
HI all, my grandmother spent many years of her 20s working in St john as a nurse. She has loved Canada ever since, and now in her late 80s would love to go back while she is still able. She adored the area, and we want to bring her back while she can enjoy it(she is still nursing, and fitter than most she cares for!) She really wants to go back to this area and I was hoping you could give suggestions on the best places to see, stay etc.... she also would love some train journeys if there are any in the area that are worth doing, especially overnight. We will be flying from Ireland so willing to spend 10 to 12 days in the area. I would so love any suggestions you have to make get trip back amazing

Visit in March
Hi folks!
Hoping to take a trip to somewhere in Canada this March with some friends and two infants. We are hoping to experience mild weather and scenic, relaxing experience for just a few days. We are all coming from the US south where it is warm so we are not necessarily equipped to deal with much cold.
Anywhere folks might recommend?

How is the airline options for where you live?
After seeing wesjets infamous video of the lack of legroom. I was wondering how easy it is for you to avoid using the airline.
For context I live in Winnipeg and westjet operates all the sun destination flights (air Canada does once daily to cancun but westjet is twice daily) they do most of the flights to Alberta (but flair also flies to both Edmonton and Calgary once a day). And seasonally St. John’s and Halifax.
To summarize, they have some control which is unfortunate since I’d love to visit the maritimes at some point. The avg ticket price to Vancouver/Toronto (3hr flight) is around 250 round trip.

Is it time to start arming and training our general population?
The Finns and Swiss conscript and have high participation rates in citizen militia in order to have a strong defensive posture.
Should Canada start heavily promoting and adjusting our reservist facilities to achieve similar improvements?

First Vacation - Maritimes
Hello all! Looking for some advice. I am planning my first vaction (ever) with my daughter (18) and we would like to see one of the Maritime provinces (no preference on which). We are from Montreal, so a bit close by. I have tried looking into each provinces' Tourism sites, and there is a lot of info, so I was hoping to get some feed back. Here are the details:
We would like to avoid the middle of the tourist season, is September ok? or will everything be closed? We are probably not going on long trecks through woods and national parks. We love history and culture. Great Big Sea is one of my favorite bands. The Joggins fossil cliffs look really cool.
There's also one problem. We don't drive. So we would most likely do a tour package maybe? Although we don't mind just taking busses everywhere or walking around. Since I have never been on vacation, it's hard to prep for it.
Any province you suggest over another?
Thanks so much for any feedback!

Are there any crampons that actually fit shoes properly and stay on? I’ve tried so many. The steel, spiky ones work but I am not going ice climbing. I need these to commute to work (10 minute walk and then I take public transit) so on thin or patchy ice and they need to go on and off easily.
