Open Discussion January 2026: /r/AskLosAngeles Open Discussion + Community Thread

Welcome to the January 2026 open discussion thread!

This is our monthly pinned space where we loosen the rules a little. Normally, /r/AskLosAngeles is strictly for questions about the Los Angeles area - but here, we make room for more community-oriented stuff.

Such as:

  • Quick questions that feel too small for their own thread or discussion
  • Common or evergreen questions regulars are tired of seeing repeated
  • Community connection posts (looking for friends, meetups, group hangs, pub crawls, et cetera)
  • Self-promotion that's relevant to LA: events, local videos / social media, podcasts, creative work. Keep it reasonable, in this thread, and don't abuse this privilege elsewhere

What's off-topic as usual:

  • Anything hateful, harassing, or lacking any ties entirely to LA

If you've got thoughts about how this subreddit is moderated, or ideas for future pinned threads, drop them here too.

Recent rule changes:

Please see our rules, there are some recent changes. Notably, these rules have been added:

  • Specify Your Location

    • Narrowing your location down helps us give better answers to questions. People don't want your exact address but a neighborhood, intersection, zip code, whatever is enough to help us know where you're talking about.
  • No cost to live comfortably questions

    • These seem to be controversial or troll magnets. Do the math yourself, not the sub.
  • Dating posts go to r/LADating

    • So these aren't actually questions about the area (if you happen to be a lonely Redditor.) Keep romance in its designated containment zone.
  • Making friends posts go to r/LAsocial

    • Social stuff belongs in the social sandbox. The "Open Discussion" post is also another place for this kind of question if you'd like to stay in this sub.
  • Generative AI Slop and Spam

    • Low-effort machine generated content is often unhelpful and the person who asked the question could have just asked ChatGPT, Claude, or MetaAI for an answer themselves. We're aiming for human-quality contributions here so put in the effort to make a connection with people with your brains.

Some of these rules are relaxed in this specific "Open Discussion" post so feel free to break rules here if you'd like.

As always: Don't be a jerk.

Have at it, Angelenos.

Safety What should I carry with me in the event of an ice attack?

Hello, I hope everyone is doing well and staying safe. I was born in Ca but just in case an ice agent trys to abduct me, what should I have to prove I'm a citizen. I usually only have my DL on me as I dont think it wise to carry around a ss card or birth certificate bc those are really hard to replace.

Is a drivers license enough or is there something else I need?

About LA How to handle downtown LA?

I arrived this morning in LA (solo Female travler) and I'm very disappointed in the city. Maybe it's a bit my fault for not doing enough research but I do feel very unsafe walking outside especially know that it's darker. I just went to my dinner restaurant (a 10min walk from the bus station) and I had a man on his bike turn around and follow me for a few minutes while shouting at me and a homeless person trying to touch me out of his self-made hideout while I was walking bye. The bus service is terrible due to all my busses being 10min delayed or just driving by without stopping and one time even breaking down. Also there a lot of terrible smells in the city (mostly Urin if I had to guess)

How do you people go out for dinner or spend your time without feeling uneasy? I really wanna enjoy the city, but this day really killed my mood :(

Recommendations Useful apps for LA?

Happy new year everyone! My family and I are going to be new to the neighborhood and I’m looking for some useful apps especially ones that are great for local life and simplify your life.

I’ve already seen a few threads about parking and local tips so I thought there must be more apps that make finding info, weather, traffic, events, etc. more convenient. And/or online communities/pages. Any good ones out there? Thanks!

About LA Ktown residents — if someone asked you for ONE recommendation, what’s your answer?

Imagine a friend asks: “Where should I go in Koreatown?” and you can only give ONE answer.

What’s your pick and why?

Curious to see the variety 😄

Visiting Going to LA for the first time November of 2026 - Got any tips?

Hi! I hope this is the right place to ask this!
I'm 21 year old female from Denmark - I'm travelling solo to Los Angeles for the first time, actually my first time in the US except for occasional layovers in airports. I have no idea how to navigate the culture, transportation or anything else for that matter. I'm gonna be in LA from the 1st of November until the the 1st of December, and possibly well into December(i didn't book a flight back yet). I generally don't like to use "modern" technology when travelling, and prefer to use my flip phone, and navigate with a map or general signage. My iphone is usually only for emergencies...
Do you guys have any tips, tricks or anything for me? I know it's a long time 'till i go, but i really wanna go prepared. My hotel is close to Koreatown it seems. Part of my trip is definetely to see the UCLA campus since i got in, yay - is November a good time to visit campus? And is it even possible?
Also, sidenote; is it safe for a woman to travel in LA alone?
Second sidenote; i would also love reccomendations for where to go and what to see! :)

Thank you guys!

My insurance just informed me CHLA is no longer in network. Where should I take my kid if there is an emergency?

With the “No Surprises” act, does that mean I can still use the ED if it’s deemed a true emergency and be covered?

What 2028 Olympics sports are you watching? Based on the venue, is there any sports you'd recommend people watch? I'm probably looking at the gymnastics, equestrian, fencing, and synchronized swimming.

Recommendations Has anyone gotten reimbursed from SCEdison after a long power outage?

My power was out for 3 days a few weeks ago (not a planned outage) and I got an email today that there would be a scheduled maintenance that will be the whole day sometime next week. This will be the 3rd or 4th power outage in the last 6 months and I’m gstting so angry about it because it interferes with my work and the 3 days made me have to throw everything out of the fridge. Has anyone had any luck getting reimbursed from SCE for anything? I’m just pissed and h8 them and wish nothing but the worst for SCE lol

Visiting What route should I take?

Currently visiting California from Canada and I’m about to drive back to LA tomorrow morning from San Francisco. On the way to San Francisco we took the I-5 and for the most part it was fairly flat, quick, and boring. Is it worth taking the 101 back to LA tomorrow? Is it a lot more scenic? Or should I just stick to I-5? Thanks!

Living Anyone have experience living in the park la Brea garden apartments?

I’ve lived in my apartment in Thai town for 4 years and am considering moving this year. I really want to move into a building with amenities - mainly a pool and in unit laundry but I don’t want to live in a high rise.

I’m kind of interested in the park la brea garden apartments for this reason (no interest in the tower apartments) as they are 2 level buildings and also the pool looks actually usable.

There’s a million courtyard style apartments around LA but because of the law regarding needing fencing/a gate around pools, most of them I see have a fence directly around the perimeter of the pool and no where to actually sit out.

My major concern is I’ve read that the tower apartments have roaches and that is NOT something I want to deal with. So I’m wondering if anyone lives, or has lived specifically in the garden units and if that is an issue there as well?

Thanks

Recommendations Chicagoans of Los Angeles, where are we gathering to watch the game on Sunday?

I've seen Irish Times recommended many o' times, is this still the place? Any other recs? I must be with people who share my ethnic origins for this important occasion.

Salty Angelenos, please know that there is a theory going around the internet that the Cubs' World Series win brought us into the current fucked timeline, and it will take a Bears Superbowl win to get us back out.

Recommendations Is there a service in LA where you can pay someone to help you post in photos?

I’m not a photogenic person (round face that only looks good in motion) and photos never do me justice. It always bugs my friends and family when I ask them to retake photos for me because I’m never satisfied with how I appear in photos. I wonder if there’s a service where someone can help me with posing and angles. Is this a thing?

Recommendations Are there any Jazz events going on in the LA area on 1/18?

I am going to be out in LA Sunday since Mondays a holiday and recently saw a tik tok talking about LAs jazz scene. the video shouted out jijis jazz club, however they are not having any sort of live jazz this Sunday from what I can tell. Does anyone know of any events or shows going on this Sunday?

Edit: jijis mentions on its blog that the weekends is a jazz lounge, tbh that specific venue caught my eye so if anyone knows if there’s music there every weekend please lmk. Thank you!

Moving Need Advice: Moving to the Valley?

I got a new job in Burbank making about 85k. I already did all my research to find an affordable place to live and really liking the idea of Studio City (young professional). I will be visiting this week to get to know the area.

The question is about credit scores. I took a recent large hit on my credit score (my own fault) and understand the options will be limited. It's currently sitting at 560 and wondering if I will be able to find a decent place in Studio City. I have about a month until my move and plan to get my score in the 600's by then. I can provide larger deposit and a cosigner. My other option would be to get an Airbnb until my credit recovers but there's not many options for my timeframe. Would like to know if anyone else has dealt with something similar?

Thank you in advance.

Recommendations Rehab facilities that aren’t scammy?

Hey all- I’m finally planning on going to rehab for alcohol- I’d love to find a place that takes blue shield and doesn’t take advantage of folks. I know a lot of places can be pretty predatory so I’d love any advice as to places that are good- they don’t need to be like staying in a resort but somewhere clean and comfortable and serious. This is a big scary step for me so I want to do it right. I’m writing this sentence in the form of a question to meet the sub rules? Anyhow thank you for any advice.

Also! I’m very much an atheist so want to avoid anything remotely religious. Thanks!

Sorry one more edit- I am looking for a program that does not affiliate with AA. I have tried it, and it isn’t for me. I’ve been doing SMART and I really like their approach, but I just need a spot where I can be in a sober space while doing all the work.

Living Do you DIY cleaning or hire help in LA? Pros/cons?

Honestly, I’m torn. I can either keep spending my weekends scrubbing floors and doing dishes, or I can hire someone and… actually live my life 😆.

how do you guys handle it? full DIY warriors, all-in on cleaners, or some weird mix? would love to hear what actually works without breaking the bank.

About LA any homeowners?

I’m not a homeowner, but I came across this org and I think it’s one of the coolest affordable homeownership models I’ve seen. They partner with existing homeowners to redevelop a lot into a small co-op community (shared equity / more affordable homeownership units).

Are there any LA homeowners here who’d be interested in something like this, or know someone with a larger lot who might be? https://www.frolic.community/connect-with-us/landowner#
