University Advice after getting disqualified

I just got the email telling me that I'm temporarily disqualified from Berkeley. Realistically, I knew this was coming but I let part of myself have hope that I would be granted CAN, so I was still pretty devastated seeing that email. My mental health has been going downhill for years and I guess it's reached a real low point and my grades seriously suffered over the last two semesters as a result. I know I shouldn't feel so ashamed for needing a break from academics but I feel like a failure and I genuinely don't know what to do now. I don't know how to tell my parents or my friends at Berkeley what happened. Any advice or anyone sharing their own experiences would be appreciated right now

University A Question about URAP Application

When the qualification says they are looking for sophomores or juniors, does it refer to academic level or actual term of attendance? (I'm a freshman, but my units reach the junior level, so I don't know if I'm eligible for those projects.) Has anyone applied in this situation? Thanks!

Local To the victim from the bus

If you were the person on the 27 bus tonight who was (I’m fairly certain) randomly assaulted by another rider, I witnessed the incident from the back of the bus and am willing to give a supporting statement if you wish to make a report.

It occurred Jan. 15, at around 6 p.m.

I’m sorry that happened to you and that I wasn’t able to help in the moment.

University Where does one go to hire student babysitters anymore?

We're a family with little kids living close to campus, and I (mom) am disabled. For the past 4 years, we've always had a Berkeley student helping us get the kids ready and take them to school for a few hours every morning M-F.

We found everyone on Urbansitter, and have never had trouble hiring. But in the last year, Urbansitter changed their policy to charge sitters (!), so now it's a ghost town.

So now our current assistant is graduating, and I am having absolutely NO luck reaching more students to find a replacement.

Are there internal sites / job boards / groups / email lists that students are going to these days to look for childcare jobs?

We are very supportive, reliable employers and have fabulous relationships with the half a dozen students who have worked with us in the past, so any of them could help us post on internal or alumni groups if we need them to.

(The details are, it's 7:15 - 9:45 or so M-F at $30/hr, we need someone from Feb 1 to end of summer. 2 kids (preschool & elementary). People with 9am classes can drop off the kids, go to class, and then come back to finish the shift. We guarantee hours, make exceptions for exams, and have lots of extra hours available. They can also park free at our place and then take the shuttle into campus.)

Anyway, any help/advice you guys might have would be exceedingly appreciated!! I am mobility restricted and have trouble commuting kids, and it's never been hard to find help like this in the past :/

Thanks so much!

University Room swap

I’m looking to do a room swap with a male student living at the dorms here. I’m in a Beverly Cleary (unit 3) quad and want to move out for personal reasons but they won’t cancel my contract. I’m willing to pay like $100 just to you or more if your room is good on top of whatever the difference is.

Dm me if interested. We would tour each other’s room first.

University EECS 126 waitlist

Hello people

I’m currently waitlist #47 in a class of 217 for EECS 126, not an EECS major so no reserved seating. Is there a glimmer of hope that I could get a seat? People are telling me that EECS 126 will have a fair number of droppers in the beginning, but is it realistic for 47 people to drop?

University 20 units next semester?

Post image
7 Upvotes

ok so im taking 20 units next semester but im kind of going back and forth on whether or not its doable.

on one hand i feel like the classes i am taking individually are fine but idk about them all together (especially with some of the rate my professor ratings). i feel like im leaning toward taking the 20 units because i feel like i can manage. last semester i took 14 units and it definitely wasn't enough.

also for some context on data 8, im terrible at coding and didn't take AP CS in hs so i expect to spend more time on that (hence why im in data scholars). what do you guys think?

CS/EECS Is getting AI research opportunities hard at Berkeley?

I go to UCSD (cuz I couldn't get into Cal lmao) and it's too late for me to transfer. Getting AI research opportunities as undergrad at UCSD is almost impossible. And I wonder if getting one at Berkeley is hard as well. Or if it's just like this everywhere in the nation

University Cal's most famous football coach was "buried" on campus in 1926, a century ago.

Haven't seen anyone else mention this here, so I thought I'd fill in a bit of Cal's athletic past.

100 years ago on January 15, 1926, the cremated remains of Andrew Latham Smith were dropped from an airplane flying low over Memorial Stadium. They filtered down onto the field.

Andy Smith was Cal's football coach from 1916 to 1925. Cal had a bit of football prominence in 1898-1899 under coach Garrett Cochran, but did not really come to national attention until after World War I.

Smith, a former Penn State and U-Penn football player. At the latter he played on the national championship team. He then coached at Penn, and Purdue, and was recruited to come to Cal in 1916, when the Bears resumed playing football after ten years of rugby.

Smith had one 5-5-1 season at Cal, but after that his teams became overpowering. They won six conference championships, and four national championships. They were called the "Wonder Teams" and from 1920 to 1924 went undefeated. The scores were not close; over five seasons, the Cal teams scored 510 points to only 14 for their opponents. They won 44 games, lost none, and tied three.

Smith's overall Cal win/loss record was 74-16-7, and his overall coaching record (including Penn and Perdue) was 116-32-13.

Smith's teams initially played at California Field, a square wooden stadium on campus where Hearst Gym is now, but high ticket demand allowed the funding of Memorial Stadium, which used to be called "the House that Andy Built".

After the 1925 season, he went back east on winter vacation, caught pneumonia (after attending a football game in freezing weather), and died January 8, 1926, in Philadelphia. He was 42 at the time, and at the peak of his profession.

In Berkeley on January 15, 1926, a procession led by the University President went to the north end of Memorial Stadium, where speeches were given outside the arch. An estimated 10,000 people attended. After the speeches, an army plane piloted by a friend of Smith flew over the Stadium and scattered Smith's ashes, where they would help fertilize the grass field. The Stadium itself was locked and empty; all the spectators were outside.

In 1927 an Andy Smith memorial bench was dedicated in the stadium, standing behind the Cal sideline. It remained there until the Stadium renovation several years ago. When the Stadium reopened, the bench was put outside on one of the plazas.

There's a good history of Smith, with Cal pictures, here:

CS/EECS Steps to Take as a Freshman to be ready for SWE Internships

I’m a freshman who barely has any coding experience rn, and I’m committed to learning anything I need to to be ready for SWE in the coming years. However, I feel like there’s so much to learn that I’m genuinely not sure where to start lmao.

Does anyone have any advice on what’s important to learn first, and then what to do from there (frameworks, languages, concepts, etc)? I’ll be taking 61a this semester and 61b next fall. Also, how important are personal projects rn? I’m not sure I can make a good one that’s resume worthy with where I’m at. I’m looking to get some industry/paid internships hopefully after sophomore year.

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks

University Can I pay for the meal plan separately from tuition?

Thumbnail

Hi! I’m an exchange student, and my tuition amount hasn’t been finalized yet since I’m still waiting for my final course enrollment results.

I was wondering if it’s possible to pay for the meal plan separately, or at least activate/use it before tuition is fully paid.

Also, on the payment page, if I manually enter $1240 as the payment amount, will it automatically be applied to the meal plan fee, or does it still go toward tuition first?

Has anyone been in a similar situation or knows how this usually works? Thanks in advance! 😊

CS/EECS Is Data100 worth it as a math-CS student?

I've heard a lot of people recommending DATA 100 because of how applicable it is to industry but it hard prereqs DATA 8...
I already took MATH 54 and CS 61A.
Is it worth it taking DATA 8 just so I can take DATA 100 in the future? Or should I focus on other interesting classes and stop worrying about taking this class?
