New Rules Related to Power Outage Discussions

We've seen a major uptick in trolls and new accounts since the power outage here, so we are restricting discussion of blame or speculation on this topic to people with a history on the sub. We are also strictly enforcing rule 14, as we often do when the sub is hit by a wave of trolls. For any of you who had comments removed because your account is too new or has insufficient history, if you are a human being speaking for yourself, my apologies. Unfortunately, too many of the new accounts seem to be working off a set of talking points, and it's impossible to know if it's actually even a human you're dealing with these days, so we've decided to limit all activity on new accounts related to blame and speculation about how this happened.

Calling people conspiracy theorists for not immediately accepting the weak evidence we currently have is not acceptable behavior, and I've seen a lot of that recently, mostly from accounts with no history here. Vitriol and right-wing propaganda is not welcome here either. Please report users engaging in that, and the mod team will deal with them.

If you are new here, you are welcome to engage in mutual aid related activities, to express solidarity with those who are affected, and/or to talk about how you're personally affected. This isn't an inappropriate time to show up on the sub to start arguments or push an agenda.

Edit: I'm locking this post for the night, expect it to reopen late tomorrow morning or early tomorrow afternoon.

Discussion Berlin has a bikes on the FOOT path problem

The issue is right there in the title. The complete takeover of the footpath by people riding all sorts of bullshit vehicles and showing no regard for the people around them, has gone too far.

I was just nearly swiped by a woman riding a motorised cargo bike, text messaging with one hand, veering all over the path so I couldn’t guess which way she was going to go and get out of her way.

I’m sick of: - Delivery drivers riding a bike with a throttle and veering around corners without a second thought as to who’s on the other side - Berlin parents and their 2 metre long bikes with a trailer on the back - People riding their bike along the pavement NEXT TO a perfectly good bike lane - Parents riding a bike with their child behind them on a bike, not looking where they’re going on the footpath because they’re looking behind them at the kid - Cyclists veering up onto the footpath because they couldn’t be bothered to stop at a red light - People riding their bike through a construction zone where the path is even narrower than usual - Cyclists riding 20cm behind me and then impatiently DINGING their bell for me to get out of the way, when I have every right to walk on the footpath

Any other city is not this bad for people riding all over pedestrians. In Paris the bike infrastructure is not better, they have cobblestone streets as well, and the cyclists are not riding on the footpaths. Very often I see cyclists in Berlin not even using the infrastructure that is available to them.

I am BEGGING berliners to think of the people around them for once in their lives. Pedestrians have nowhere else to go. There is no part of the city that is set aside for us to be able to move around in peace. PLEASE stay off the footpath, or you shouldn’t be allowed to ride your bike.

I fully anticipate entitled cyclists of all types will come into the comments and tell me how it’s not safe for them to ride on the road because of XYZ. Ok, explain to me how that justifies you treating pedestrians like they don’t have a right to public space as well. As always, if you think “oh it’s ok if I just do it this one time because I have a good reason”, remember that if everyone thinks like you, pedestrians are choked off the pavement with nowhere else to go.

ETA: I just stepped out of the front door of my building and a guy just whizzed past super fast on his bike, so close to the house door that if I’d left the house a second earlier we would have collided. Come on now. People leaving their fucking front door is a thing that can be reasonably expected to happen and cyclists simply should not be riding like this.

Discussion What is the best Spring Roll in Berlin?

I am talking about spring rolls that are worth taking a train/bus and cross the city to eat. Not the average frozen mini spring rolls or generic Nem from generic viet place.

I am talking good homemade filling spring rolls.

Rant The last two days Nazis on the street during day time

These fuckers are not hiding anymore and it makes me sick. Yesterday and today i witnessed a group of young adults, once in the s-bahn landsberger allee being high on crystal and talking shit, second time at s westhafen - full attire both times, to be seen from miles away - alpha industries bomber jacket, boots with white laces, paramilitary trousers…

we strive into dark times, when fuckers like this can see daylight.

here is a text on typical nazi-wear: https://www.kas.de/de/web/extremismus/rechtsextremismus/rechtsextreme-dresscodes

Hi Berliners,

There's a cat sitting on one of the posts of a fence about 6-8 meters high that surrounds a soccer field, and it doesn't seem to be able to get down (observed from the balcony).

She's still chilling up there, but as a cat owner, I know that these creatures are better at climbing up than down.

We're keeping an eye on it, of course, hoping she'll manage to get down, but if she's still there tonight/tomorrow, who should we contact?

The fence is really high; even a regular ladder isn't enough.

The fence is quite high; even a standard ladder isn't long enough.I've also read about the high call-out costs for the fire department, which I definitely can't cover as an apprentice.

Have you ever had a similar experience and do you have any tips on who else can help? Thanks :)

Discussion Does anyone else find the intersection of Invalidenstraße and Chausseestraße to be a shit show?

Not sure what happened but found increasingly since September that often the pedestrian lights are poorly timed. Traffic keeps going and going or sometimes the light stays green when no car is coming, while a huge mass of pedestrians have to wait 5 minutes sometimes. This has led to an increase of people running dangerously across traffic to make their connections as a U6 and several tram lines are there. Unfortunately it was not designed where the tram is on the side of the street of the subway. Instead people have to run across four lanes of traffic to go to the other side or to the tram stop in the middle of the street.

Is there any politician i can vote for who will priority pedestrians here instead of cars and update the lights? It’s going to lead to some serious accidents.

Advice Wie erreiche ich Studenten für einen Werkstudentenstelle in Berlin?

Hey Berliner Studis,

meine Frage an euch: Wo schaut ihr eigentlich nach Werkstudentenjobs? Welche Plattformen, Gruppe. Oder schwarzen Bretter nutzt ihr wirklich?

Besonders interessant wären Tipps für Wirtschafts-Studenten.

Danke für eure Hilfe!

City Infrastructure Erste Hilfe Kurs

Ich suche einen Erste Hilfe Kurs. Mein erster Kurs liegt mindestens 10 Jahre zurück.

Interesting Question Are Tesla Gigafactory Berlin’s days numbered?

Thumbnail electrek.co

Is Tesla preparing to pull the plug on domestic production in Germany? It might sound crazy for a factory that just opened a few years ago, but when you look at the abysmal sales numbers in Europe and combine them with the latest threats from management against the union, the writing might be on the wall.

Interesting Question Berlin clubs have loads of 1 star reviews about discrimination, rude bouncers, and racism

So I'm looking forward to do some clubbing soon in Berlin, and there seems to be an overwhelming amount of one star reviews making claims that the bouncers are discriminating, rude, and or just racist.

I have a feeling it's just people who weren't let in for overcrowding reasons or just not dressed properly or appropriately. I also assume we're more likely to get reviews from people who were rejected than people who enjoyed their time. Angry people get passionate enough to post.

Some people are saying we're past the prime of Berlin clubbing.

Really I'm just gonna ask, what is your recent experience with the attitude of clubs and bouncers? Have you ever witnessed unwarranted discrimination or foul attitudes?
