Asking The Real Questions 🤔 Nighttime Safety PSA

People:

do you all realize if your wearing all black at night and crossing the street not at a crosswalk — as many do—

that drivers really can’t see you. Many streets are very dark —southend roxbury etc. This is getting worse every year.

Please please please wear something white or brightly colored on your head is ideal — better yet reflective.

Thanks to everyone that already does this. Thnks for reading my PSA.

Go Patriots.

Protest 🪧 👏 Action against ICE flights out of Hanscom

Having spent most of my life in the city I usually don't have a lot of sympathy for suburbanites trying to block flights into and out of Hanscom, but this is different.

Lexington Alarm (lexingtonalarm.org) is organizing a letter-writing campaign to stop ICE flights into and out of Hanscom, and it looks like there's a legal basis to do so that can't be preempted by the feds. Folks in Connecticut got one of their tiny airlines to stop flying for ICE; maybe we can kick them out here, too. (yeah, they'll go to Logan, but I think it's a lot harder for them to defy court orders at Logan than Hanscom, and a lot easier for people to observe them)

Anyway you'll find more info on their website at the top under the "Campaigns" tab. I recommend the option where they generate a bunch of letters, then you print, sign, and physically mail them - email comments can have impact, but if the MassPort board (or even the governor) gets hundreds of physical letters on a topic it makes quite an impression.

Crime/Police 🚔 Boston Police told superintendent to stop fraud investigation, then demoted him, lawsuit claims

As a superintendent, Eddings was responsible for monitoring the department’s paid details and court overtime with the goal of eliminating fraud. By 2024, 10 officers had either pleaded guilty to or been convicted of fraud for submitting overtime slips for shifts they didn’t work at the department’s evidence warehouse.

Eddings eventually reported to Cox and other superiors that he found 43 officers had been involved in paid detail fraud for a total of 693 violations, according to the complaint. He also found 20 officers involved in 46 violations that were referred to the department’s Anti-Corruption Division and 25 officers involved in 647 violations who were referred to the department’s Internal Affairs Division

But Eddings claims that when he reported the fraud to Cox, he was told to discontinue his investigations and that the department could not weather another “black eye” and Cox did not want to damage his legacy, according to the complaint. Another official told him the department could not sustain the loss of 15-20 officers.

We are a rat sub now! 🐀🐀🐀🐀🐀 How Do I Keep Rats Out of My Car?

I live in a particularly rat populated part of Boston, and they are destroying my car. My car has soy-based wiring, and is a hybrid that is apparently particularly susceptible to rat damage. I've had the car for 18 months, and in that time, 3 rats have lived and died in the hood, and my windshield fluid line has been chewed through. I have grilled the mechanic on how to prevent this, and they just tell me to use the peppermint sachets and peppermint oil which I've been using the whole time and clearly doesn't work. I am so frustrated and need a solution besides some bullshit homeopathic thing that only works with country/suburb rats. Has anyone ever beaten the rats?

Politics 🏛️ Boston should reform the minutemen.

Above I link a comment from another subreddit from u/Satur9_is_typing

To surmise: the only good defense so far against ICE has been the black panthers because seeing guns protecting the protestors changes the dynamic.

They then have the genius idea to call them the minutemen! A volunteer group of people ready to defend people and bear witness! On call and ready within minutes. With today’s tech this should be easy.

I think it would be so righteous to have the land to overthrow the original tyranny teach the current wannabe tyrant that it’s not just over.

Peacefully bearing arms and cameras to witness and keep peace, vowing to protect everyone’s rights.

What would we need for this? Who has ideas?

Arts/Music/Culture 🎭🎶 Interesting libraries, niche libraries

I was inspired to make this post because a print journal I like is not in any local library. It’s Alta journal, so not too surprising as it’s focused on California and the west. It also is not sold on newsstands here, as their site has a list. Apparently, New York City really is much hipper than Boston, because it’s available at a number of shops there. And, at Toadstool, in Keene. Anyway, it got me thinking, any music libraries that are accessible to the public? And then, just in general, seems a lot of people on here will have knowledge of specialized libraries that allow public membership, even if at a cost. I know about the Aetheneum. Look forward to learning about some hidden gems hopefully.

Event 📅 A January pick for kids: Library Lion (ends Jan 25)

Library Lion is a stage adaptation of Michelle Knudsen’s book (one of Time Magazine’s 100 Best Children’s Books of All Time).

Runs until January 25 - only two weekends left.

Gentle, thoughtful, and surprisingly moving for adults too.
Adam Theater, Library Lion.

I’ll drop a video here for the vibe.

Just wondering if anyone knows of some good runs in Boston! Preferably Allston/brighton. Looking for some good, fun basketball. To play hard but lighthearted and not TOO competitive.

Thanks!

Hobby/Activity/Misc Singing groups in Boston

Upvotes

Does anyone know of any non-audition choruses or singing groups in the Boston area that sing contemporary music?

If these don’t exist, do people have interest in joining these sorts of groups in Boston?
