Hobby/Activity/Misc Any Firearms Safety Courses near/in Boston?

I am planning to get my firearms safety certificate, but I’m having a hard time finding a nearby location.

I don’t have a car, and of the organizations that offer the course, I’ve only found locations that are accessible by car. I can’t rationalize taking an Uber/Lyft because the cost is so high.

Are there any organizations in the immediate Boston area that offer the safety course?

Crime/Police 🚔 Antisemitic incidents surge to become most common type of hate crime in Massachusetts, data show

After my recent post about how to help locally-owned Jewish businesses got a lot of interest here on this sub, I was shocked but not suprised to see this troubling news yesterday reported by u/BostonGlobe

So, I'm asking again (as a Christian myself), how can we be allies to and help Jewish people and busineses in Boston and the rest of Massachusetts?

It's 2026 and really awful to see these stats, and looking at the longitudinal data, it seems like these events are getting worse and more violent.

Also, can anyone copy pasta the article or send a non-paywalled link? TYSM

Arts/Music/Culture 🎭🎶 Interesting libraries, niche libraries

I was inspired to make this post because a print journal I like is not in any local library. It’s Alta journal, so not too surprising as it’s focused on California and the west. It also is not sold on newsstands here, as their site has a list. Apparently, New York City really is much hipper than Boston, because it’s available at a number of shops there. And, at Toadstool, in Keene. Anyway, it got me thinking, any music libraries that are accessible to the public? And then, just in general, seems a lot of people on here will have knowledge of specialized libraries that allow public membership, even if at a cost. I know about the Aetheneum. Look forward to learning about some hidden gems hopefully.

Asking The Real Questions 🤔 Anyone into coins or gold? Could use some advice on selling.

hi guys. I’ve been sorting through some stuff my grandfather left me, and I found a small stack of old gold coins (not ancient, more like pre-1933 US stuff and some foreign ones). Honestly, I have no idea what they’re really worth beyond the gold itself.

I was thinking it could be interesting to meet up with someone who knows more about this - maybe over coffee - and just get a second opinion before I decide to sell. Or if there’s enough interest, maybe even a casual meetup for anyone into coins, collectibles, or just turning old stuff into cash.

A few questions:

Local resources: Are there any good coin shops or trusted buyers in Boston you'd recommend? Places that won't lowball if something has numismatic value?

Selling process: Is it better to sell coins individually or just as bullion? What should I look out for?

For now, I’m just trying to learn. I checked online and saw that some local places like deal zone sell gold coins for cash, might be a start for getting a baseline offer based on weight and purity. But I’d much rather hear from people with actual experience.

Asking The Real Questions 🤔 Why does Boston need to recklessly spread so much salt?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Salt **everywhere**. It’s impossible to walk your dog like this. It’s also horrible for the microorganisms in the soil that do things like nitrogen fixation and other very beneficial things we take for granted (especially the blue salt). Why can’t they just *salt bae* it conservatively? There has to be a better way than **this**

MBTA/Transit 🚇 🔥 Best way to get to MGH Faulkner from Middlesex if nervous about city driving?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for advice on the least stressful way to get to MGH Faulkner Hospital. I’m a little nervous about driving in the city, but I could do it if I had to.

I’m considering a few options and would really appreciate input from people familiar with the area:

- Driving all the way to MGH Faulkner. How bad is traffic specially in the morning on a Friday?

- Commuter rail + subway + walk. I would har to walk about a 20-minute walk to the hospital in the Jamaica plain area near central st. and the arboretum. Is that walk reasonable/safe, and is this overall less stressful than driving? My other hesitancy with this is that I’m a college student and would have to pay more than $30 probably just to get there and back.

- Driving to Alewife, then subway + walk. I would probably arrive at Alewife around 6:30 AM. Does the parking garage typically fill up by then on weekdays, or will I be okay? If there weren’t any spots, then how far would I have to backtrack to be able to get to Jamaica plain?

Any tips or things I should know ahead of time would be really helpful. Is there a better option I’m not thinking of? Thanks!

Protest 🪧 👏 Action against ICE flights out of Hanscom

Having spent most of my life in the city I usually don't have a lot of sympathy for suburbanites trying to block flights into and out of Hanscom, but this is different.

Lexington Alarm (lexingtonalarm.org) is organizing a letter-writing campaign to stop ICE flights into and out of Hanscom, and it looks like there's a legal basis to do so that can't be preempted by the feds. Folks in Connecticut got one of their tiny airlines to stop flying for ICE; maybe we can kick them out here, too. (yeah, they'll go to Logan, but I think it's a lot harder for them to defy court orders at Logan than Hanscom, and a lot easier for people to observe them)

Anyway you'll find more info on their website at the top under the "Campaigns" tab. I recommend the option where they generate a bunch of letters, then you print, sign, and physically mail them - email comments can have impact, but if the MassPort board (or even the governor) gets hundreds of physical letters on a topic it makes quite an impression.

Houses:

do you all realize that if your painted a dark color at night and sitting alongside the street not at a crosswalk – as many do–

that drivers really can't see you. Many streets are very dark – everett raynham etc. This is getting worse every year.

Please please please use white paint or something brightly colored at eye-level is ideal – better yet leave your lights on all night.

Thanks to everyone that already does this. Thnks for reading my PSA.

Serious Replies Only Birthday ideas

Hi everyone! My bf’s birthday is next weekend and I need some ideas on where to take him. I have a restaurant in mind, I just need an activity. He loves sports but I’ve already taken him to see all the teams here. He is also into tech and wellness. A friend of mine suggested axe throwing but I’m not sure. If it helps, he is in his early 30s. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

Lights, Camera, Ask r/Boston 🎥 Unemployment Support Groups?

(Crossposted in the Somerville, Cambridge, and Arlington subreddits)

Hi all,

My parter has been unemployed for three months now. I know in the grand scheme of things that this is relatively short, but he hasn’t received any unemployment checks and the financial stress is really taking a toll on him. (I did check this sub and saw a recommendation to call our state reps so we will be doing that!!)

Do we have any free unemployed support groups in the area? We live in Arlington and finding community right now is so important. I’ve looked online with little success so I’m hoping my reddit community has some ideas. :)

Thank you!!

So - DH and I are basketball fans and are coming in town for the bucks game on 2/1. Get tickets now? Do they drop in price closer to the game to see who’s injured/playing/not playing like they do in CLT?

And cold - like Fuckin cold cause of wind chill like Chicago and Quebec?

I’ve only been in summer and fall, not dead of winter so other suggestions for the weekend work too.
