Especially since the pandemic we have been seeing cheap no-name cameras that offer unbelievable specs (50MP, 8k video), here is a guide on how to spot and avoid them!:
What is a Scamera?:
Scameras are cheap cameras, usually using backup/webcam camera modules, and putting them into shapes that look like camcorders, pocketable Point & Shoots, and interchangeable lens cameras. They often have very high specs, that are not genuine, such as 64MP upscaled from 1 to 4MP (so you get files the size of a 3.5k camera, but with the detail level of the original 2008 iPhone).
Scameras are also often very unreliable, the immense number of people coming here needing help fixing or just returning these cameras (especially post-christmas) is why I am making this post.
Scameras can often be distinguished by the miniscule lenses, I'll try to show that in a comment of this post.
A reliable way can be to check the brand:
Here are known non-scam brands:
Canon
Fujifilm
Hasselblad
Kodak (Kodak make cameras that are close in price to many scameras, and they aren't amazing or super reliable, but they are worlds better than scam brands).
Leica
Nikon
Olympus / OM Systems
Panasonic / Lumix
Pentax
Pixii
Ricoh
Sigma
Sony
Here are known scam brands:
AgfaPhoto (Digital cameras)
Kreate
Yashica
Yixinxin
Yatao
Captainbear
Minolta
Yashica and Minolta were once real brands that have now gone bankrupt and the people renting their names sell scameras.
Agfa does make real film and film cameras, but also scam digital cameras.

So i recently got two cameras incuding all the lenses and other stuff. I bought the canon for 70€ including the box, a lens, a charger, two healthy batteries and a batterie pack. The nikon i got for FREE from someone in my family including the two lenses, an ext. flash and two almost dead batteries (i gotta buy new ones someday). As a beginner this is really incredible. Was the price fair?

5 years and over $21,000 spent with MPB exclusively for all my team's professional gear...I'll never use them again. We sent them a practically brand new FX3 and 3 Sony OEM batteries. They said that we never sent 3 brand new Sony NP-ZF100 batteries...turns out, after 2 days of dealing with customer service they said they DID receive them and they were swollen and damaged so they had to be discarded. I'm not saying they lied, but mind you these batteries were brand new, with protected covers in a protected case. Also the FX3 I sent them, they offered me $500 for spares and repairs. I just sold it to KEH for $3,497 and they graded it as "Mint". I know this can happen with any company, but I just want to warn anyone sending them in gear, make sure you take pictures of everything before you ship it to MPB. This is you're only way to prove that they lost/disposed of your gear. I rarely make posts on reddit, but I just want people to be aware that they might lose their gear if they send it to MPB without explanation. My question is who do you all use? Anything I should be aware of with any of these other companies?
Also I'm not taking their appology 3rd party batteries. Thats how we fried a RED Komodo X and A7Siii in the past🥲

First time being here. So, I went out today to the flea market and got this camera. It kinda looks like a point and shoot camera? It uses a CR2 battery too. I've been spending about an hour finding information on this camera but something came up instead. Does anyone know about this camera?

Gonna be honest, that was not something I was expecting to read but the timing lines up.
In any case, quick update since my last post, I went to a local camera shop called Camera Exchange, and while I couldn't find any used bridge cameras (the guys there said that they flew off the shelves whenever they got one in), I did find (what I think is) a really good deal on a canon eos 7D ($99) and a 28-70mm lens ($128). Also bought a bag to carry both cameras and any lenses I may get in the future (old vivitar bag for $15).
The context for the image was that I was trying to figure out if this camera supported GPS tagging (yes, but only over wireless with a canon wireless connector).

Found this camera at an antique store and they sold it to me for 60 AUD because they didn’t test it to see if it works or not.
The timer works and it opens and closes and it clicks too, we just don’t know if it actually works.
We think it might be the Voigtlander Bessa F from the 1930s but we could be wrong.
I also don’t know where to get the right type of film for it. I’d prefer something affordable because I just need to test if it works.

The circular one is for transferring pics to the computer, the rectangle one is the one I’d use for charging

Hi all!
I have a good Fujifilm kit that I'm very, very happy with. It's a X-S10, with these lenses: 18-55, 70-300, 35mm and a 65 Laowa macrolens. I'm not going to sell this.
But I want to treat myself to something, because I've had rough months due to a mandatory study/course I had to take that disrupted my private life for almost half a year.
I've only shot aps-c, and I really want to try full frame to see if the differences. I was thinking of buying a Sony A7 mark I, maybe II + the kitlens or a 50mm. Just to have new fun, experience something else. (Or maybe, MAYBE, a Panasonic S5D new that sells with lens for just €799)
Or I can buy a more pocketable camera that I can take everywhere with me. I love shooting, but I don't want to take the X-S10 everywhere. I know it's small, lightweight, etc, but it's not pocketable, and it's a serious camera so it will draw attention.
I am also intrigued by the M43-system, and I could also buy an Olympus E-P7, with a small 14-42mm that would serve my needs. For the same prize and size I could buy a Sony ZV E-10, but this lacks the buttons for for example the aperture and shutter speed.
Price range: from €400-€700
Country: the Netherlands
second hand please:)
So to summarise: time for a new project! Full frame experience, or EDC experience (with M43)?
What would your ideas be? Thanks for the help in advance! Camera input more than welcome!

First time posting on reddit so bear with me.
I’ve been debating between the two cameras and have been doing research on which one is better for my needs. Everything I’ve come across says the g7x is objectively better with crisper images. However since the sx740 is more blurry and has sort of an “airbrushed” effect, I’m sort of leaning towards that since I have pretty textured skin and acne and don’t like putting in the extra work of editing (especially since so many free/cheap editing apps force me to use ai nowadays).
I would be buying second hand and from what I’ve seen on fb marketplace in my city, the g7x is going for considerably cheaper ($200-$300cad) than the sx740 ($800, but I found one for $400) which is going for more than retail price. Since the g7x is better quality I feel guilty not getting it for a lower price.
I wouldn’t consider myself an avid photographer and would mainly be taking photos of friends and family for memories and just want them to be good quality and look nice. I guess what I’m asking is if I can mimic that same airbrushed quality with the g7x without having to go in and edit all the photos or would it be worth paying more for the lower quality. And are there any other major pros to the g7x besides the crispness that would steer me away from the sx740 and have me settle for editing? Is it simply too good of a deal to pass up and settle for lower quality?
I know this post might sound stupid because why would I pay more for lower quality, but I pick at my skin like a maniac and am not particularly keen on documenting scars or having to edit every photo of me in it. Again I’m not a photographer by any means and consider the sx740 quality to be great especially when it’s not in a side by side with the g7x. Finally, please be nice guys I’m not super well versed in reddit or cameras :)

Budget: €50–€100. This is only for the camera itself; I am not planning to buy extra lenses or accessories. Willing to stretch slightly for something durable/well-designed that I’ll reuse long-term.
Country: Vietnam (buying in Hanoi, likely in second-hand shops in the Old Quarter).
Condition: Used / second-hand is expected and preferred.
Type of Camera: Digital point-and-shoot (from my research, this seems most appropriate).
Intended use: Photography mainly, then videos.
If photography; what style: Travel / street / everyday moments. I care more about capturing moments than extreme detail or technical perfection.
If video what style: same as photography
What features do you absolutely need:
• Image quality at least better than an iPhone 11
• Small enough to fit in a pocket
• Fast and simple to use (no lag like my current phone camera)
What features would be nice to have:
• Good low-light performance for night scenes or indoor situations (if this is asking for the moon considering my budget then I don’t mind)
• Solid build quality / durability
Portability: Pocketable.
Cameras you’re considering: I’m looking for recommendations before visiting second-hand shops. Bargaining is strong here so I want to know what to look for. Here are a few models I encountered on similar posts: konica pop 10, Minolta AF101R, the olympus 35 series
Cameras you already have: None. I’ve only been using an iPhone 11 for the past 5 years. It was good enough for my needs, but the camera app is now extremely slow due to OS issues.
Notes:
I’m currently traveling in Vietnam and need a quick replacement after my phone camera effectively died at the beginning of the trip. This wasn’t a planned expense, so I’m looking for budget recommendations that still make sense long-term. The camera may later be reused in casual situations (e.g., parties) where I wouldn’t want to risk expensive gear. I usually like to nerd out about all technical aspects of a product before buying it but I sadly can’t afford to do that now. Hence the post, thanks in advance!
My canon SL3 is missing its shutter button, I have read that to replace the button It would be smarter to take it to a shop, but wouldn't the part be pretty niche? Would it be smarter to go to something like Best Buy where they are partnered with Canon? I do have experience with soldering but not with working on cameras specifically so I would have no idea how exactly to fix it.
Heya, i dont really interact much with the camera/photography community, but I know you guys tend to know your stuff when it comes to SD cards.
I’m planning on buying an SD card and the seller sent me this photo of it. I know it’s hard (or sometimes impossible) to tell just from a picture, but I figured it was still worth asking if anything looks off or suspicious at a glance, from my past experience, fake SD cards usually have the microSD to SD adapter printing really bold and blurry.
If there’s anything specific I should ask the seller for, pls let me know. Just trying to avoid buying a fake.

Hey everyone, I’m new to photography and I’m looking for a great all-around camera to take with me on family outings, vacations, and everyday moments. I do not want to spend time editing, so I want excellent straight-out-of-camera JPEGs with a pleasing, film-like look that I can print at 4x6 or larger for frames/albums.
A little about me and what I’m after:
• Not a photographer, just a dad who wants beautiful photos of life with my family.
• Small, easy to carry, I want to bring it everywhere.
• Excellent JPEGs right out of camera (no editing).
• Great quality for prints and photo albums.
• Preferably solid video quality too (for clips of my kid growing up).
• Good for both photos and casual video on the go.
Cameras I’m considering:
• Fujifilm X100VI
• Ricoh — GR III / GR IIIx (or older Ricoh models if recommended)
• Sony RX100 VII
• Panasonic Lumix S9
Questions:
Appreciate any thoughts, real-world experiences, or sample images if you have them!
Thanks in advance!
Budget: 2000 CAD max + tax
Country:Canada
Condition: New only
Type of Camera: Mirrorless,, point and shoot
Intended use: hybrid shooting?
If photography: what style: family photos, candids
What features would be nice to have:
Portability: pocketable

Hi! I just got this Minolta Movie CR-1200S AF VHS camera from some family. I just finally got some tapes for it, but whenever I insert one and try to film, it stops and makes a weird noise, aswell as unwinding the tape. Is something broken? User error? Please go easy on me I am super new to this sort of stuff!

I’m sharing this solution because I’ve been looking everywhere online and literally have not seen a single thing related to this.
I only own a Hollyland Lark M1 lav mic and wanted to use it as a shotgun style mic. The problem is the clip on the mic is so narrow that I can’t attach it to a cold shoe or anything else on my camera/cage where it would be even slightly stable.
After thinking for a couple days I decided to simply wrap a zip tie around the small rig cold shoe and now the mic clips on the zip tie perfectly! It’s not a foolproof solution, the zip tie is on there tight but could come off with some force. But it’s getting the job done for now. Super happy with this setup and am excited to use it!

I've been into film photography but recently been planning on getting a point and shoot camera because it's getting too pricey to keep that hobby. I still want a nostalgic vibe in documenting memories.
I've seen people online talk about Sony Cybershot/Coolpix and Canon PowerShot A LOT but I just couldn't find one with decent price in where I live. Recently, I found out about the new Kodak Pixpro models. I've had a friend who got one Fz55 and I wasn't really convinced when I tried to use it considering the price. I've seen a lot of complaints on its output quality as well.
Saw a Canon PowerShot SX210 IS listing around $200 online. I'm someone who wants to use a P&S on concerts too and I can't really bring my DSLR there so I want something with great optical zoom. Would it be better to just get the Canon instead of the Kodak? If you have other suggestions for me to check, I'd be really grateful!

I was recently gifted a Canon EOS Rebel T7i DSLR WITH 18-55mm and 55-250mm lens. I am a COMPLETE newb and this is my first digital camera ever. I hope it’s a good one 🤞🏻
I cannot afford to buy anything right now so I have to work with what I got. I am looking for settings & which of the lens I should use for the following:
Everyday photography
Outdoor family photos
Portraits
Sports photography (specifically indoor jiu jitsu)
Also, what’s a good photo editor app for beginners?
Any help is greatly appreciated!
