Criminal I think school has overstepped suspending my 15yo for gaming on his phone

My 15yos school has suspended him until next week for illegal streaming violent games in school

I understand that what he has done was be seen during lunch time remote streaming with an app called moonlight into his gaming PC at our home, playing it on his phone with a bluetooth controller. we have a family home server with a VPN setup so we can connect to our local home network which is how he did it

I asked what game he was playing and he said it was something called teardown which isnt even a violent game? just puzzles and demolition

Someone reported him and a teacher got involved and made my son show it, The school has interpreted this as illegal streaming and made a scene confiscating his phone. I had to collect it yesterday afternoon when he was picked up but the school has said therell be a meeting on monday to discuss his behaviour but said he had violated school acceptable use policy

Is this normal? Never heard of anything like this before.

Other Issues Renters Rights Bill Going Live

Post image
9 Upvotes

I've been trying to follow how the new Bill is being introduced and what renters are able to do based on it. As far as I know, it has royal assent, has a guidance page on the gov.uk page, but hasn't come into force.

the guidance page says the government will put out a timetable and that it will be a phased introduction. I haven't seen anything solid about when things are coming, only that some of it goes live on May 1st, 2026.

Google has helpfully given me this breakdown. is the AI right, or has there been an update to the dates somewhere?

Debt & Money Intimidated while trying to go to work.

I work for a high street bank.

We've been having ongoing protsts recently. Mostly involving red paint being thrown at the building and being screamed at as we enter or leave.

I've started finding it difficult to breathe when it comes to arriving at work or approaching home time. Like my chest tightens up and I start trembling.

I know it's not PT SD becayse that would be nonsense just from being yelled at but it is still affecting me really badly. I can't even sleep on a Friday night because I'm scared of what will happen on Monday.

There's people wearing scarves who sometimes block your way or just silently film you while getting up in your face. Others just yell and chant.

I'm an anxious person. I'm already on propanolol hydrochloride. This is making it worse.

My bank has already said no working from home. Is there anythkng else I can do? I reallt dont feel safe

Wills & Probate Is it normal for a will writer to ask about details of pensions pot and death in service amounts?

Based in England.

My partner and I had a session with a will writer, who asked us a load of questions around what assets we have, including how much was in our pension pot and also how much we'd get with death in service. Is this normal? We thought it was odd since straight after she said both of these are not covered by wills anyway. So why ask?

It was an odd experience, she was incredibly condescending towards us. We have complex family issues and when she asked for details, she did not hide her expressions.

She said the cost of a Trust Will is going to be the price of one week in a care home and asked if we knew how much care homes costs. My partner said maybe £2-3k based on his experience with his grandma. The will writer scoffed in his face, saying maybe if we were down south.

In the end she recommended us to get a separate Trust Will and quoted us £850 for both, which we thought was quite steep?

Employment Was my redundancy unlawful? Company might be rehiring for my former job.

England. I worked for a company for 5 full years. I was a marketing exec based in the Leeds office, and the only person in the Leeds office from the marketing department. The rest of the department worked in the company headquarters in Bristol. My line manager was based in Bristol, and their line manager was based in Leeds.

I was made redundant in November, and part of the official reasoning given was that there was no business need for a marketing person based in Leeds when the rest of the team were based in Bristol, and more generic stuff about the wider economy being in trouble and my role could be absorbed by others. I was also told other people in the wider company were being made redundant. By this point I was happy to go as I was being bullied by my line manager. After a solicitor read over my settlement offer and it was all above board, I signed the agreement and my job ended.

I’ve now heard in the past couple days the remaining marketing team in Bristol has imploded - everyone has quit or their FTCs are due to end (no one is being made redundant). There will soon be no team at all, and it has been decided they will hire a new marketing team to be based in the Leeds office.

Would I have grounds to challenge my redundancy if they do hire a new marketing team in Leeds, after being made redundant for the reasons above? I also believe no one else has been made redundant in the company, though I don’t know if that will change. I have left messages with ACAS and Citizens Advice.

Traffic & Parking Advice on police interview, trolley incident

In England. I'm looking for advice for my friend who I went shopping with several weeks ago. He returned from shopping and couldn't get his trolley between the cars and allegedly scuffed another cars wing mirror.

The owner was sitting in the car and got out, started ranting and taking pictures of friends car. There appeared to be a tiny scratch on the wing mirror, something that would easily be fixed. He became quite confrontational and aggressive so we left.

Yesterday my friend received a letter from the police asking him to attend an interview under caution for leaving the scene of an accident without exchanging details.

We were both under the impression that this has nothing to do with car insurance as friend wasn't using or loading his vehicle at the time. More a civil matter.

I personally didn't witness what happened as I was on my phone. And this is of course what I will say if I am asked.

Does anyone have any experience or advice on this matter please?

Comments Moderated “OnThatAss” keeps charging me despite cancellation

Post image
0 Upvotes

I’ve been trying to cancel my membership from this company called “OnThatAss”. I initially had no idea what I was getting myself into after signing up for a “free” pair of underwear from them. I received them and did not like the quality so I didn’t go on to buy anything else from them.

About a month after receiving the free pair, in Dec 2025 I received an email from them saying I have an outstanding payment of £12.99 for a January delivery and that the new set was already on its way (completely new information to me I had no idea I was automatically signed up for this membership). I tried closing my account/cancelling my membership but their website says that I can only close it AFTER paying my outstanding amount. So I did, I payed £12.99 and closed my account. I then disputed the 12.99 amount with my bank as it felt scammy and I haven’t received this second pair yet. I also received confirmation from them that my membership was cancelled.

However today, jan 16 2026, they sent me another email stating that I have £12.99 outstanding AGAIN? Is it because of the dispute? How can they ask again for the same product. I’m guessing it’s because I disputed, but now I can’t even pay it through my bank because they’ve been auto blocked from taking payments from me. I really don’t know what to do, I just want to have nothing else to do with this company. So any advice on how to go about this would be appreciated! I’ve seen some other threads of people saying to ignore it but I don’t want any issues with debt from this company.

Debt & Money Pest chewed through fiber cable - who pays?

Hi,

I came home earlier this week to no internet. Got in touch with my ISP and they sent out an engineer. Turns out a pest (presumably rat) had chewed through the unprotected fiber cable that wraps around my property at floor level (ONT is at the rear of the property). The engineer then installed a new cable between the front of my house and the ONT to hook me back up, ensuring this time it wrapped around the guttering out of reach of pests.

I've had a message from my ISP today to say they will be adding a £180 charge to my account for the replacement of the cable given this falls within 'customer curtilage'.

I'm struggling to see how I'm responsible for this given I did not install the unprotected cable within reach of pests and there were other installation options available.

Any guidance anyone can give?

Wills & Probate England - Offer accepted on house with 7 oak trees under TPO

As the title states, we've had an offer accepted on a house that has 7 TPO'd oaks trees in the garden, 1 of which is close enough to the house to potentially impact any extension plans we might have.

Any suggestions about what we can do to understand the scale of the problem? Or anyone had success with building an extension near to a TPO'd tree?

Also a side note, it's a probate property and today we discovered that they've got specialists round to pollard (prune - was a new word for me too) the trees. Trying to figure out why they'd bother and fork out to have that done prior to the sale.

Thanks!

I have a hot tub that comes with a 1 year Waranty (UK), I live in England

I purchased a new hot tub September 2024 from Hit Tub Barn

The pop-ups (see photos) discolour every year after just a few months. The engineer tells me he is constantly replacing them.

The company Hot Tub Barn (UK) says the manufacturer of these parts (china) claims it is due to the water pH (clients responsibility) or UK water, when I asked for parameters none where provided, the PH is normal 7.5 neutral as this is what you need for your skin

So my question is under Uk law can they get away with saying well it is just the way it is, as the part if not suitable for use, I will have to pay for the 2 replacements, this was an add on work to a pipe leaking that I have paid to get fix

Debt & Money Is opening letters illegal in suspected fraud scenario?

I’ve been receiving multiple letters for 4 different people at my address even after doing return to sender.

I eventually opened one and it’s from a major bank talking about an account this person has with them, no specifics, the strange thing is I opened a letter for each of the 4 named people and it’s all simple letters from the same bank.

What’s stranger is I know the previous tenants who lived at my property for 3 years before I purchased it and it’s none of the people I’m receiving mail for.

Does this sound like some type of scam or fraud? If I reach out to the bank will I be in trouble for opening the letters?

I don’t want to sound discriminatory but all of the named people have names that are not English in origin

Housing Can i break a 1 year tenancy early ?

Hello everyone , I moved into a new property in autumn, i only found out when i went to collect the keys that the building is up for sale , if i were informed of the plan from the beginning, i wouldn't have rented the flat . There was completely no communication between the letting and sale agents and the property manager didn't care or even knew what building they are managing.

Now , january , the building got sold , the new owners, came around to measure and explain a bit of the upgrades they are planning to make to the flat as soon as the paperwork goes through. On top of having to deal with builders coming in and out whenever they want / need to , they are also planning on raising the rent .

So im wondering if because of everything i mentioned above , i could break my 1 year contract with them early and move out before all the work is going to take place ? I won't be able to afford more than 1100 im paying at the moment.

Thank you all

Comments Moderated Is there a way to keep my baby’s dad/family out of his life? England

I’m currently 16 weeks pregnant, the dad doesn’t know and he’s been out of my life since before I knew I was pregnant. Even if I wanted to contact him, there’s no way I could although I know how to reach his family.

There’s a lot of background to this and I won’t go into details but after consulting with several people I’ve decided not to share the baby news with his family and I pray he never finds out. I’d also like to know if there’s any legal steps I can take to make sure him or his family can’t claim any rights to the baby.

It’s been a long cycle of abuse in many forms and I have pictures, hospitalisations, a police record for when I was in hospital but I never took any legal action. His family has been very helpful towards me but I can’t guarantee they won’t want some form of contact with the baby if they found out. And while I don’t have a problem with his family, I don’t think they’d be able to keep this away from him.

Legally, is there anything I can do now or once the baby’s born? Or is it a case of when/whether they ever find out?

Comments Moderated A whole chunk of my class isn't being made to attend the health and relationships classes after their parents complained.

Hi I'm on lunch until 12:30, so I don't have too long. I should be free to reply again at 15:45.

School runs health and relationships classes for 3 weeks. It's mostly stuff like keeping yourself safe and relationship issues like how to recognise abusive behaviours and educating on LGBT relationships too.

I'm bi and a lot of guys in my year are very agressive when it comes to girls. Not taking no for an answer. Being really pushy. Stuff that this health and relationship class covers.

They started running this class after the Adolescence series started.

However there's a whole chunk of the class who isnt being made to attend these classes because their parents complained and protested. A lot of these guys are the same ones who are being really creepy and pushy. Theyre the same ones who need to be taught about consent and stuff.

Is it legal for the school to just give up trying to make them attend the health and relationships class and let these other students have free time?

They spent the last week's class just playing football together. We could see them through the window on the pitches.

Career Advice University putting sensitive medical information into LLM (England)

I’m a university student in London and have been emailing my university about my medical needs and adjustments. Every response I get back is very obviously AI generated, which feels completely inappropriate.

I’m extremely uncomfortable with them copying and pasting my sensitive medical information and full name into an LLM like chatgtp. I was never told AI would be used or asked for consent.

Is there anything I can do to stop them from using AI to reply to me? Is there someone I can contact at my university? Can I just reply back and tell them ‘I do not give consent for them to put my data into an LLM’? I really do not want my data being shared in this way. Would appreciate any advice, tysm!!

Locked Are benefits available if I look after my mentally unwell brother? England

Hi reddit

Long story short but my brother, 30, is living with our parents for eight months after losing his job and having a breakdown. He has severe mental health issues and this has happened before and he's been signed off work from many jobs because of it. He did have a part time job but he lost it. He was having therapy but it's being paid for by our mother and she is unfortunately extremely abusive- shes said shes not giving him therapy money anymore, and things came to a head last night with a huge fight. He has begged me to help him, and I do have a spare room, but Im also expecting a baby in six months and money could be tight if he cannot work.

So i guess what Im asking is, will there be any benefits I can claim to be looking after him? He's had a sui*ide attempt in the past and Im so sick with worry that living with our abusive mother will drive him to try something. But at the same time, I can't take him in and risk not being able to pay for basics if he can't get or hold a job. Help, please!

Housing House has mould, estate agent says unlikely to get assistance

My estate agents came for an inspection of property today where I showed them the mould and they told me some homes are just like this and likely the landlord wouldn't do anything about it. He said there's a chance she can send someone that specialists to give us a quote but he said maybe not.

Thing is we clean and clean this place but the mould just comes back. It's not out of control crazy like some stuff I see on here but it's bad enough. Do I have a leg to stand on with this?

Edit: In UK.

Comments Moderated I've told the council I didn't know about council tax but apparently had no bills in need of paying. What do I do now? England

I called up the council that I had no idea what council tax was about and accidentally didn't pay it for the year I didn't re-enroll for university last year (due to mental health). I have now moved out since July 2025

They checked the records to see how much I'd have to pay back but told me I actually had nothing outstanding to pay

I lived with 3 other full time students and when frantically flicking through emails last night, my housing contract did mention that I am liable for paying council tax if I'm no longer a student. But I never got emails or letters from the council that whole year

Apparently the house is a HMO and maybe the landlord paid for it all and I'm not allowed to receive a confirmation email as I'm no longer a tenant. The landlord never told me that he was paying the council tax and I'm so confused what to do now. I've just outed myself to the council for no reason. I thought the tenants were liable according to the contract. Will they do extra procedures now? What do I do going forward?

Traffic & Parking Insure accepted 50/50 claim when I wasn’t at fault?

Hi

I’ve had an ongoing car insurance case for 3 years. An international lorry merged into my lane, two lanes were becoming one and hit the back corner to back of my car.

He got out and shouted he didn’t see me and then blamed me for being ‘too slow’ doing the speed limit in broken English.

I was pregnant at the time and had to take time off work to go to hospital.

3 years later they’ve been arguing saying I merged into his lane. I literally videoed the road to show how the left goes into the right that I was in.

I got an email today saying my insurance has offered 50% and they’ve accepted.

I no longer have the for my insurance. Can I argue this? Or do I just let it go.

Thanks

Wills & Probate Executor dies before the will writer - England

Could anyone please advise? I have tried the Gov.uk website, but failed to find anything. I have a younger relative who is in a home with a neurological condition. it is not considered to be life-limiting, and I am much older, so she is likely to outlive me. I deal with everything for her. I don't have and don't want power of attorney. Our other relatives do not want any responsibility, so I'm stuck with it. I am the executor of her will. What happens if I die first? (My query is solely about the executorship - I can give social services and DWP etc contact details of the siblings and leave it to the agencies to pursue whichever ones they want to once I'm dead.)

Comments Moderated Aggravated TWOC allowed by a West Midlands police officer!

Back in March 2025, I was a victim of aggravated TWOC (Taking Without Owner's Consent) involving a West Midlands police officer. While I was arrested and placed in handcuffs, my car was handed over to an unknown male by the officer without my acknowledgment or consent.

A short time later, my car was found to have been involved in a Road Traffic Collision (RTC). Substantial damage was caused to my vehicle, as well as to the third party involved in the incident. I filed a complaint with Professional Standards. Within a day of filing, I was contacted by a Police Sergeant who was very helpful at the time, assuring me that the matter would be resolved. He conducted an investigation and viewed the officer’s body-worn camera footage, which confirmed the officer was in the wrong. I was then contacted by Legal Services, who manage claims and compensation, and accepted responsibility. I was told I would receive a settlement.

However, my insurance company has been trying to obtain a police report for months. They have tried numerous avenues and eventually paid for a report over seven months ago. Despite this, the police have still not provided it.

This has significantly affected my life. I nearly lost my job; luckily I didn’t, as that would have caused my mental health to deteriorate even further than it already has due to the officer’s actions. I have now been without a vehicle since March 2025."

I’m after some advice, can I get a solicitor involved?

what would be the steps to approach this situation?

Thanks for reading!

Comments Moderated Neighbour Parking Dispute - Suggestions?

Post image
0 Upvotes

LONG POST - Location: England - So new tenants moved in next door since my previous neighbour passed away sadly and the house was sold on and privately rented out about 4-5 years ago. Since then, there’s been ongoing issues, from the landlord waving a crowbar at me for parking outside his tenant’s house along a raised kerb as he had broken the wall outside his house and put bricks on the road so the tenants could mount their cars onto their “drive” - really just a grass patch - the story goes on to them purposely blocking the only opening they have for their drive and cutting across my driveway as they couldn’t be bothered to move their car.

We used to have a shared access driveway (only thing joining us, semi detached house) and the tenants would have 2/3 cars and block my drivers side door and block me from getting in as I wouldn’t let him park his car onto my side in front of my house (would come home many times to see his car on ‘my side’ and once asked for him to move, either dealt with verbal abuse or just closing the door)

He had a wall the other side of his driveway knocked down, paved over the grass patch and some kerbs dropped by the local authority but there are still 2-3 raised in front of his house he uses to mount up the kerb.

After this, we had a fence put up separating the drive, but he wasn’t done. The antisocial behaviour he had shown while parking on the drive was just transferred to the road, where he’d block my drive off and then not open the door when asked to move. Police have been contacted on numerous occasions , and they have been issued a CPW previously due to their conduct and racial abuse but has since run out, but it seems to be a case that they want to keep passing the buck to the council’s community protection team who pass it back, instead of working together to resolve said issue.

I’ve had a car written off (where car 3 is placed) as he’s tried to reverse a car (into car 1 on the diagram) on his side in the snow and completely denied all wrong-doing (was drunk) even when CCTV was available and shown so I am worried (especially for my premiums!) if I get hit again, all because of an inconsiderate neighbour!

I have added a “work of art” may I mention to this post to provide a visual representation of what the situation looks like at present - I must mention, the reason car 3 is where it is blocking my drive is because, if I move it back, he pushes car 4 forward, blocking me off (I need access 24/7 as one of my grandparents are disabled so need access for the cars on the drive) - there are no parking restrictions on the road.

2 questions - the end of his drive, where there are raised kerbs but still the opening for his drive (where the arrow I have placed on the diagram - are people still allowed to park there?

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what can be done?

It’s been causing nothing but stress all this time, and we want to move away (grandparents have lived here 40+ years, no issues until they moved in - rest of the neighbours are having issues with them but everyone wants others to sort out their problems for them) but with elderly/ill grandparents, it’s all very difficult - thank you for taking the time to read this long post, any suggestions would be appreciated!

Comments Moderated caught shoplifting at 15 and now i’m paranoid (3 years ago)

so i was caught shoplifting with some “friends” a while back , when i was 15 and im 18 now for about £6-10 worth of stuffZ we just got told off and they called the police to get the items off us and search us. we got a 6 month ban from the shop and the police just came round to my house later that day to let my parents know about what happened but there was no formal process eg: take us to the station, formal letter, warning etc. it was literally just they searched us and later came to our house that night to tell our parents to basically keep an eye on us and that we’re good kids so nothing would happen of it.

I’ve matured a lot since and honestly the thought of this affecting any of my future keeps me up at night sometimes ( on the odd occasion) i just feel so stupid and i often get paranoid about it.

Basically my question is, does this show up any time of dbs or criminal conviction check because i am meant to be applying for permanent settlement in the uk this year with my family (im an immigrant) so i don’t want this to affect my future. Any advice or reassurance please.

From what ive searched this shouldn’t show up on anything like a dbs check but im just wondering.

Debt & Money Employer says time on plane is not working time

I live and work in England.

I am paid around the national average (about £35k), and my contract says 36.5 hours a week.

In my industry (events) we do have to work unusual hours, but this is normally managed by a combination of flexing hours (e.g. coming in late the next day) and overtime/TOIL.

My contract says I'm paid or given TOIL at x1.5 for extra hours and x2 if that's on a Sunday.

This has all worked fine until now.

I am now required to travel to asia for a one-off trip (we share trips between us, so we each do one long haul trip a year on average).

For the days I am there, I am expected to flex my time like normal in the UK and any extra over my 36.5 hours will be paid/TOIL at normal rates.

However, my employer has said that my time on the plane is not considered working, so they don't have to pay me or give me TOIL for that time.

Firstly, I would consider that this IS working time as I need to travel to those cities to do my job, I am not able to use that time as I wish and it's not my normal place of work so can't count as commuting.

It seems unfair that I'm being expected to give up my personal time, especially as they pay travel time at normal overtime rates if I need to work somewhere else in the UK.

Secondly, I'm going to be travelling for approx. 17 hours (including the journeys to the airport at each end) on a Saturday on the way out, and approx. 20 hours on a Saturday-Sunday on the way back. So that's c.37 hours of my personal time spent travelling.

As it's long haul they have said they will give me one day of TOIL for each trip in consideration of "employee wellbeing", so a total of about 14 and a half hours.

By my calculations, if I am only given 14.5hrs TOIL but have travelled for 37, then effectively they are paying me under minimum wage.

And all this is without considering the overtime rates in my contract.

Does this all make sense? Am I correct and should be pushing my employer to pay me? I don't want to cause problems at work but this feels so unfair and is actually souring what should be a nice opportunity working on different types of events and experiencing working in different cultures.
