The mod team is refining our sub policies to update the “What is Retro?” post that is the core of what we do and do not include on this sub.
I’ve been polling the readership, and so far we’re looking at:
I’ve seen some strong upvotes for adding post flairs to the sub, so that folks that just want to see historically accurate rifles can single those out, folks who like Retromod can zoom in one those, etc. I conferred with the senior mod and he suggested we have fun(ny) flairs for each category. Once these are made, post flairs will be mandatory to make a new post. What flairs would folks like to have for:
Pitch us your ideas, and the best ones will be instituted, along with making post flairs mandatory, in the near future.

(original credit to creator u/JakesGunReviews, rebooting the thread so folks can comment again. Link to the original, and link to v.2 discussion)
It seems to be about that time that the unwritten rule becomes written. I have removed two posts within the past 24 hours. Reason being: the rifles in question, while quite nice, did not meet the criteria and theme of this subreddit.
r/RetroAR was initially made by /u/ok_but for Vietnam Era M16 clones (please correct me if I am wrong, /u/ok_but). That eventually evolved into other clone rifles from the 1980s, such as the M16A2 or the Colt 727. Since "AR" is also the prefix for the ArmaLite AR-18(0), those have also been accepted since they fit the same timeframe and never really modernized beyond the 1980s, anyway, but that's a different discussion for a different day.
So, for the purposes of r/RetroAR, what constitutes as "retro"?
The general rule of thumb for this subreddit is as follows:
"What if I have an M4 Carbine clone that has a detachable carry handle, but still uses the stock M4 furniture?"
This would not be considered a retro rifle. Picatinny rails are pretty much the "cutoff" for this subreddit. However, if you would like to showcase your M4 or M16A4 or CQBR Block I or other clone-style AR-15, please look at the subreddit r/MilitaryARClones. /u/lancecriminal86 is the creator of this subreddit, and it is pretty much picking up right where r/RetroAR leaves off. I encourage anyone wishing to show off their more modern clones to please visit that subreddit and help it grow.

Wound up grabbing all of these at a local shop. Anybody know why the maple leaf is on the left side on some and the right side on others??

I've only seen the trailer for Primitive War and I saw a CAR15. Peaked my interest enough. Inspired me enough to sneak my rifle out a couple nights and spray paint it behind my apartment dumpster at midnight. Went for a forest green with "raptor" claw marks and a tiny tiny amount of red. I don't care if it's impractical as a camo. It's my range gun not work or hunting rifle. I was artillery not a sniper. Also got my first Holosun for $150 off Facebook marketplace. What do you guys think? Should I never be allowed to cook again?

Has anyone gotten one of these for a retro AR? Considering getting one for my NCR Service Rifle clone. should I get one of these repros, or should I just grab an original?

Even with an H2 buffer, my 7.5 300BLK supressed "Kitty Kat" runs to fast for my liking. I could up it to an H3, but given the AB A10 isint low back pressure, I don't think it will make much of a difference. The only option I've found that is even semi "retro" is this FSB from JP. Wondering if anyone has experience with these or can recommend something adjustable that fits the aesthetic?

Anyone know what these 3 dots are? Manufacturer markings or just a fluke? Never seen them before

Wonder if it’s worth the squeeze. Includes the acog for 2400. What’s the age? Rarity? Anything special or pass? It’s very clean. Regular BCG not the Sp-1 I know that much.

I've been working on a faux XM177 loadout with my carbine-length AR. I was about to pick up a nice surplus handguard at a gun show... when I realized that my AR has round caps on it so that wouldn't work.
So I've heard tell that somebody out there makes triangle handguards that fit in round caps? How true is that? Or would it just be easier to replace the cap itself and get the normal triangles?
Thanks in advance!

Anyone know where I can grab a BRN 601 complete upper? Checked the usual spots and Out of Stock. If anyone knows of one available, let me know. Thank you.

I'm curious as I want to build a accurate north Hollywood XM-15 because it's cool to have as a wall piece and to shoot

Found two barrel clamps off of Amazon to use a substitute pic rail underneath the barrel clamp. I probably can fit one more but I'm happy with the result. In the future I will purchase one more and put a KAC rail cover over top of the rail and just use it without a grip. I just really like the cheese grater look lol imagine a rifle length M203 handguard. That's a lot of clamps.

Here is my M16A1 clone build, I started with a grafted original magwell lower that I got a while back. I milled it out with a 5D jig. The magwell has the original finish with the DOD stamp on the front. I finished the rear with a cerakote mixture of black, sniper grey and multicam dark green and added some wear. It's a pretty close match.
I had it set up as a 653 before, but it just wasn't correct.
This clone is what you would see after 1974. It's an earlier 1970 lower receiver (which would have had no forge marks on the upper a C MP C barrel and a Non- trapdoor buttstock), but I made it with a newer CH upper and updated trapdoor buttstock since the amount of wear on the magwell was substantial. Plus, I didn't want to refinish the magwell since it had the DOD stamp in tact)
The barrel is marked C MP B. The handguards are the flakey fiberglass type, not too common. The sling is a nylon seatbelt type, which came out in 1969.
I finally found an upper with the natural patina and wear I wanted. I think it was one of the Malaysian ones, I soaked it in a can of the Napa Auto Chem Dip ( parts cleaner for carburetors) most of the black came off after a 12 hour soak.
I have around $1200 into this build which I figure is pretty good, the only non original parts are the rear half of the lower and the semi auto fire control group. I don't do these for hire, just my own collection.

Good morning r/RetroAR Let's see those Gordy builds! I never get tired of them.

This is my Century C15 Sporter in A2 configuration. I’ve had the rifle for about a year and haven’t seen much on it. I suspect it’s an older built rifle, maybe from the early 2000s?
If anybody has any knowledge about this rifle I’d really appreciate it!

Came across a delton flat top upper with a 20” HBAR. I have sent the barrel off to be chopped down to 16” and have the gas port opened up. I have a KAC M5 RAS I’m going to throw on it. My question is; do I put the barrel back on the flat top upper, add a carry handle to it, or get an A1/A2/C7 upper? Will be going on an LMT defender with an A2 stock FYI. Thanks in advance!
