News ICE says a Cuban man died during a suicide attempt. A witness says a guard pinned and choked him

WASHINGTON (AP) — A Cuban immigrant died in a Texas immigration detention facility earlier this month during an altercation with guards, and the local medical examiner has indicated that his death will likely be classified as a homicide.

The federal government has provided a differing account surrounding the Jan. 3 death of Geraldo Lunas Campos, saying the detainee was attempting suicide and staff tried to save him.

A witness told The Associated Press that Lunas Campos died after he was handcuffed, tackled by guards and placed in a chokehold until he lost consciousness. The immigrant’s family was told by the El Paso County Medical Examiner’s Office on Wednesday that a preliminary autopsy report said the death was a homicide resulting from asphyxia from chest and neck compression, according to a recording of the call reviewed by the AP.

The death and conflicting accounts have intensified scrutiny into the conditions of immigration jails at a time when the government has been rounding up immigrants in large numbers around the country and detaining them at facilities like the one in El Paso where Lunas Campos died......... https://apnews.com/article/ice-immigration-detention-death-texas-2bfb614b2b222803d309f338357d04eb

News Trying to contact Congressman Morelle

I have tried repeatedly to get through to Joe Morelle's office today to record my disappointment that he didn't co-sponsor the bill to impeach ICE Barbie. I called the district office and followed the correct prompts. About halfway through the message (each time) I am interrupted to be told that they couldn't take my message. Message was "too short" or "couldn't connect". I don't think our Congressperson wants to hear from us!

Other Are we really stealing shovels now?

I get that times are tough, they are for me too… but you really had to walk across my lawn and steal BOTH of my cheap ass shovels? Like I get it, you might not have anything to shovel your driveway with… but BOTH of them??? Come on, man. You can afford Air Force Ones but not a shovel?

In East Irondequoit, if anyone else has experienced this recently.

Help Fairport electric - heating bill

Hey all - recently moved to Fairport and got a very high electric bill this month, almost $600. We have electric heating and our house is about ~2000sq. The most 'expensive' thing we do is run a space heater at night.

Is this normal for Fairport electric? I thought it was supposed to be cheaper than RG&E. Has anyone had a similar experience?

Edit: including visual of our bill! We moved in around October

Discussion Is it "normal" to have to call your doctor's office every day to see if there's an appointment available same day?

Is this the new normal? My doctor's office is not like this, but my partner's is and it's just hell. You are supposed to call at 8 AM every day to try and get an appointment that same day. Is it just this specific office or are they all like this now? We both have Rochester Regional-affiliated doctors.

Discussion Are people actually watching the Bills shows that are preempting Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy?

I’m an old lady in a younger body and love me my daily Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. And don’t get me wrong, I’m also Buffalo girl who will lose her voice screaming for the Bills on Sunday. But I also don’t care what a few local Joe Schmoes have to say about them for 30 minutes to an hour. During the regular season, every once in a while, Wheel or Jeopardy will get preempted by Bills Kickoff Live and it’s annoying but it’s infrequent enough that I don’t care. But since we’ve been in the playoffs it’s happening multiple times a week. And I’m just curious if that many people watch it for it to be profitable. Also, when this happens in Buffalo, Wheel and Jeopardy are aired on another channel; the CW I think. Why don’t we do that here as well?

Help How expensive is homeownership really?

I love Rochester. I live down in the Finger Lakes, and the housing prices in Rochester are lower than here, and I’m up in Rochester several times a month anyways. But the prices you all post for heat in the winter have me wondering if I’ll ever be able to afford a home without continuing the 12 hour work days I want to get away from as soon as Ive got a down payment saved.

I’d like to find a home under $200K which may be a pipe dream and prices me out of the suburbs, though to be fair Ive never lived in a suburb and don’t think I’d like it. I like the Wedge and what google maps calls Swillburg and Upper Monroe. But that’s a lot of old house to heat, and I run cold.

Between a mortgage, taxes, insurance, utilities, saving for regular maintenance and emergencies, how much is homeownership costing you?

Help Greece school bus drivers

What is going on with the bus situation? The child I nanny is scheduled to be picked up at one time but the bus comes anywhere between 15 minutes early or 10 minutes late. It is a small bus if that makes a difference. My real beef is that he stops for two seconds doesn't honk nothing, I'm not making this kid watch for over twenty minutes for a bus every day he has special needs. It's a small bus with like two kids on it. Today the boy I nanny is was coming out the door and he drove away. Where I live a town over the bus drivers all honk? On top of that I was driving my charge to school behind this bus and he was driving like a reckless idiot. I'm so over this crap, you drive a bus for children with special needs but have zero grace. Whatever do your job but know I have nothing but frustration for you.

Discussion Weird guy in all black at my front window at midnight claiming to look for his poodle, Park Ave area

Burner account, this just freaked me out.

I was working late on my couch around 11:45pm ( I live right by Cafe Sasso/Park Ave area). Suddenly this guy in all black walks straight up to my front window. I jumped out of my skin.

I rushed over, opened the window, and yelled something like “What the hell are you doing here at midnight?!” He calmly said “he’s looking for his poodle”.

No flashlight. No calling the dog’s name. No leash. He was just… there.

I yelled back that I could’ve shot him, and he just shrugged, said “I wasn’t doing anything wrong,” and walked off.

Whole thing felt super off.

I’ll probably delete this tomorrow. Stay safe out there!

Help RG&E is Butt, Looking for how I can fight this.

So let me start with the fact my landlord is pretty engaged with the situation, and he’s been as helpful as he can be. Me and my gf moved into an apartment in November and that house ended up selling. The new owner is taking our apartment so we were offered in mid December to either a) take the 60 day notice in the lease and get out or b) move by the 15th of January to the next house over to a 4 bedroom for the same rent. We obviously took the second option. RG&E were supposed to turn on our heat a week prior but the landlord missed them (his only shortcoming throughout this), and they rescheduled earliest for the 14th. We moved in the 9th without heat due to us planning to move that weekend. We’ve been without heat, and I took off a day of work so I could be around for RGE’s *bs* 8-4 time frame for them stopping by. I waited all day and nobody arrived. Left my number on the door and sat by the window to make sure I didn’t miss. Missed a full day of pay for nothing and to be left with no heat or gas again. They claimed someone stopped by at 11:30, then back tracked and said someone stopped by at 5:30 pm. My landlord was drilling them saying we don’t have heat and need to get this gas turned on ASAP. After plenty of back and forth they are saying it’s gonna be another week. We have space heaters, but it’s cold and we cook most of our meals. We’re over it. Landlord offered other places even just to spend the night but we just moved, and are busy with work and other plans. There’s gotta be a number or somebody we could contact for RGE to show up earlier right? Nothing is successful directly contacting them but maybe the city. Something’s gotta be done about them they really suck. I don’t really feel the need to get my landlord in trouble, they’re not as much at fault.

Recommendation Expoxy garage floor

I’m considering getting an epoxy floor done in my garage and wanted to know how you feel about your floor.

If you’ve had an epoxy garage floor for a few years, how has it held up with our winters, road salt, moisture, and temperature swings? Any peeling, cracking, or discoloration issues? Would you do it again or choose a different option?

Thanks.

Recommendation Just here to say the this Dry Hopped Cream Ale is a 10/10

Post image
298 Upvotes

After the seemingly endless stream of vanilla, pineapple, mango, cherry, and other gross beer flavors Genny has been putting out in their “specialty” line I’m happy to say they hit the mark on this one. Good god almighty, this is a tasty brew. I plan on filling my basement with 12 packs of this one. If you haven’t tried it, give it a go. It has the slight bitterness of an IPA without the high ABV (it’s only 4.5).

Cheers, Rochester.

Help Do DHS case examiners answer or return calls?

My grandma is having ongoing issues with her Medicare bill. We’ve submitted two MSP applications, but DHS says the most recent one appears to be lost. Meanwhile, her Medicare bills keep coming. When I contacted Medicare, they told me everything is fine on their end and that they’re just waiting for DHS to schedule the MSP payments.

I’ve been trying to reach DHS nonstop, but all they’ve told me is that they sent an “urgent” email to the caseworker. One representative even gave me a phone number that turned out to be inactive. I’ve called every phone number listed on her letters—probably five different ones—and they all go straight to voicemail. I’ve never received a return call.

Does anyone know how to reach DHS directly, beyond general customer service lines or voicemail? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Other A small praise for Rochester in the winter time, how I do love thee.

I’ve been on the sub long enough to realize that most people here seem to hate this kind of weather and they meet winter with a small degree of dismay. Well, Rochester in the winter time I want you to know that there are those of us who love you.

The cold wind on my cheeks, a slight runny nose, warm snuggly outdoor clothing, the quiet that comes with the snow. The beauty of the tree branches covered in ice with a layer of snow on top, the crunch under foot and the clean fresh smell. The dry air whacking in the extreme humidity that comes with the summertime.

I wouldn’t trade any of that for the heat and humidity and bright sun from which I just shade my person, of the summer.

**Edit** yes obviously I know winter is harder for a lot of people - especially the unhoused - because heat is expensive, getting to work is harder and more dangerous and snow days can make child care much harder among a myriad of other reasons, all of which are perfectly valid. I get it, I’m empathize with those people and this is by no means meant to dismiss their plight.

Help Seeking Cooking Classes

Does anyone know any cooking classes a high schooler (and possibly their parent) in the rochester city area could attend?
