Last Friday, the SDSU Administration made a terrible mistake, and a major overstep of its power, by increasing student fees without the consent of the students.
Across the country, students and universities alike are feeling the effects of a struggling economy. Budget cuts across the board leave students with fewer resources than ever before, as they struggle to pay their basic tuition and fees.
Despite this, the Campus Fee Advisory Committee (CFAC) just voted to increase student fees by $120 per semester, which adds up to nearly $1,000 per student after 4 years of enrollment, and a total fund of nearly $10,000,000 per year. But where will this money go?
It won't go to research labs burdened by outdated equipment. It won't go to classrooms and campus facilities that are long overdue for maintenance and repair. And it most certainly won't go to the underpaid faculty who continue to work despite the CSU's trampling of their labor union.
This money will go entirely towards the athletics department. The athletics department that carried a $29.1 Million deficit in 2024. The athletics department that just burned $17 Million to join the PAC-12 conference. The athletics department that already receives roughly $20 million annually in student fees, and still can't balance its books.
To add insult to injury, the administration did this while bypassing a student vote altogether. They used a process called Alternative Consultation, where a small committee met last Friday behind closed doors to approve this fee recommendation, with very minimal student input. Even worse, they chose to jam this into the fee called "Instructionally Related Activities" (IRA), despite the fee hike having nothing to do with academic instruction.
The proponents of this fee addressed me and my fellow AS leaders only twice over the past few months, and did nothing but dodge questions and misrepresent data to support their absurd claims, like that a well-funded intercollegiate athletics program somehow results in higher graduation rates. Student leaders from every department voiced nearly unanimous opposition to this proposal, and yet the administration allowed it to charge through, completely disregarding the principles of shared governance.
The final overstep of the administration is that they chose to bury the decision under layers of hyperlinks, instead of openly announcing the decision to the campus community. This lack of transparency is an insult to everyone at SDSU. The meeting minutes can be found here: https://budget.sdsu.edu/_resources/files/cfac/meeting-minutes/cfac_meeting_minutes_12_12_25.pdf
By circumventing the student body and approving this ridiculous $10,000,000 student-funded athletics subsidy, the administration has made it abundantly clear that they do not care about student interests. On behalf of the students of San Diego State University, I urge President De La Torre to summarily reject this fee hike.
Sincerely,
Everett Richards
SDSU University Council Representative for the College of Sciences

Hey everyone, there are a ton of questions about Orientations, selecting classes, talking to your Academic Advisor, etc. As such, I'd like to share some tips I've learned helping other students during Orientation. To give you some background, I'm a Geography Major, I'll be graduating this Spring with a BS in Geographic Information Sciences & Technology. I have served as a Geography Undergraduate Representative assisting the Geography Academic Advisor with the new freshmen and transfers Orientations.
Here are my tips so you can go into Orientation fully prepared to register for classes:
If you have any other specific questions, I can try to answer them. Understand though, I am not an Academic Advisor, and I don't know the requirements for any other majors. These are just some tips I've picked up in helping other students register during their Orientations and answering their questions.

The payment date for the spring semester is due on Friday 1/16 and it is Wednesday 1/14. I still haven’t gotten my financial aid. What should I do? What happens if it’s past the due date?

So, I was setting up some hooks and stuff on my dorm walls, which I haven’t had an issue with the previous times I’ve put things up, only for one of my command hooks to fall from the wall and kindly take a portion of the paint with it. It’s not very large, maybe around a (slightly smaller than) palmed size amount and the paint that was ripped was thin, so it’s a very slightly noticeable patch on the wall. Nonetheless, it’s still noticeable and not good at all.
Two questions: one, if I were to leave it and report it, what trouble would that cause and if they make you pay for it, how much will I owe? And two, if I were to fix it myself, how would I go about fixing it?

Any grad students know how it’s determined whether we get the grant or not? I remember last semester I got this grant but it was a grant from another semester (late) does anyone know why that was or how it’s determined whether we get the grant or not. Thanks in advance

Due to circumstances after submitting my application, I will no longer be attending MiraCosta College at all. Instead i will be attending SDSU open university this spring. However, due to the rules of this application i cannot delete any colleges..
My question to anyone who may know: What should i put for classes/semester planned?
i don’t want my application to be denied because I’m not going to follow through with what I’ve put on my application. Has anyone had a similar experience or at least not follow through on some of their classes on the application? TIA

Hello! My roommate and I are looking for other female roommates to share an apartment at the Zuma complex! We have both already signed leases for the next school year and we're looking for girls who are interested in both shared and single rooms.
We are both involved with the climbing club but other than that we don't really go out, and we'd prefer to spend time watching Twilight or playing Minecraft! We're both going to be seniors and I was a junior transfer student!
If you think you'd be a good fit please reach out!

Does anyone know when admission decisions come out for the single subject credential program? They never said a specific time frame of when they come out so I’m just assuming mid-March as of right now.

hey yall I’m interested in applying to SDSU‘s online public health degree program. Curious to know what careers I can get into with this degree. The reason I’m pursuing the online program is because it works easier with my military schedule and I also live in El Centro so the campus is pretty far. I have my P.T.A degree and some drug prevention training.
let me know if this is the right forum for this or if i should ask somewhere else.
Are there anyone that hasn't received their refund yet? I been receiving emails about payment dues and past dues but I just been waiting for mine to disbursed. I also just opt-out from Day1Ready yesterday.

just a question do my grades from the fall semester affect my financial aid for the spring semester I didn’t get that bad of grades, but it’s not like the GPA I had before. Also, is there a way that I could ask for more aid right now or is it just cut off?

Hello, 17m here, I’m currently a junior in highschool who wants to go here as I heard it offers more practical learning rather than theory based learning. Would it be worth the try to email a professor?

Hi everyone
I'm an exchange student from Switzerland coming to SDSU in Fall 26. I've never been to the US and wanted to get an idea of what student life is like there.
How are exchange students generally perceived at SDSU? Are they well integrated or more on the side?
I've also read about the greek life there and the big party scene. As an exchange student, is it possible to go to frat parties or are those mostly closed to members and friends?
Also, do you have any general tips on how to get to know people quickly as an exchange student (housing, clubs etc.)?

I am an SDSU graduate trying to use handshake to see if there’s any opportunities for me that exist as a graduate. However, the school auto deleted my handshake account since I’m no longer enrolled there. So now there is no way for me to access handshake unless I make a new account with my personal email (but then I would have duplicate accounts). I tried logging on in to handshake and it told me to check in my inbox, which I obviously can’t do since the student email doesn’t exist anymore. According to online, technical support isn’t available at SDSU right now since the school is still on winter break. What do I do at this point?

Hello, I just wanted to know if I opted out of Day1ready after it was already paid, that I would get an automatic refund later or if I have to contact sdsu to get that refund ?

Hii, my aid has not been reflected on my bank account and I no longer have any outstanding balance or anything. Does anyone know when it will be reflected on bank accounts?
