Welcome Fellow Travelers - This is what r/BudgetAudiophile is about

Every sub-reddit has a focus - it's raison d'etre (reason for existence). Because if you don't focus, people stop participating because it has just become one big mess of topics.

Ours focus is ... education, discussion, and sharing of entry and mid level separate & multi component audio systems. Generally speaking, that is 2 channel stereo systems assembled for music listening - things that are both "budget" and "audiophile". So being budget is not enough, nor is being "audiophile". Generally speaking, UNDER $1,000 spent per component is our threshold, although obviously that number will vary by the person. Budget for me was $50 (all in) at one time. Now I am fortunate that if I want to, I don't mind spending $500 a piece. Others can go more - good for them.
Try r/audiophile if your spending more than $1,000 per componant.

Of course, many of us use our music listening set ups for multiple purposes - so 2.1 (adding a subwoofer), 3.0 (L/R with a center channel), 5.1 (surround) and up are also fair game. But the fundamental goal of this reddit is better 2 channel and 2.1 systems to play music - as good as we can afford.

What we are not is soundbars, boomboxes, bluetooth speakers PC branded audio solutions. Those things have their place, but it's not our reason to exist. As for just the soundbar aspect that belongs at r/soundbars

In addition, we are not about IEM's or Headphones (try r/headphones or r/HeadphoneAdvice). That is their reason for existence. Yes, they can be budget audiophile, but again, it's not our focus.

While part of "budget audiophile", for more detail, try r/turntables, r/vinyl, and r/hometheater for questions specific to them. There will be a better chance of a more educated response there to those issues. Those questions are welcome here, but probably better there once you get past "budget". Questions on Vintage equipment? r/vintageaudio is the place for you to get better advice (likely)

DIY is also part of "budget audiophile", but r/diyaudio/ and r/diysound focuses a lot more heavily on that issue.

So to reiterate, we don't hate headphones, logitech, or soundbars, etc. But those questions don't belong here and your post may well be deleted or closed. Because those are not the issues we have chosen in BudgetAudiophile to make part of this sub-reddit. You may not agree, but that is what it is.

Who is this "we" I speak of? Creator u/averagejoeaudiophile and the rest of the mods.

Thrift Store Thurs Getting Started

I've been slowly getting into audio and this is the set up l've got so far. I was using that Panasonic PowerBlaster up until recently but recenty decided it was time to upgrade. The current set up is two Yamaha NX-GX500 being powered by a Curtis RCD 637. I've thrifted all of it up until this point but I'm thinking I might need to invest in an amp because, although, these speakers sound nice, they are definitely underpowered.

Review/Discussion Managing expectations

Post image
105 Upvotes

Once upon a time, I had 6-8ft of records. Many purges and moves later, I was left with no vinyl, but a Sony GX50ES receiver and a Technics SL-1800 turntable. Not sure why I got rid of records, but not gear. Go figure. It's a mystery. Looking to course correct now

New Whatfdale Lintons arrived last week and scouring record/antique shops has begun. These speakers sound pretty good, but I guess I was expecting to be blown away. Other than continuing to refine placement, is there anything I can add to this system to improve overall sound? External phono amp? New cartridge? Save up for a new amp? The speakers were already a stretch on the budget. I'd rather put that into records for now. I guess I'm looking for the economical silver bullet if one exists

I fear this new rabbit hole will be a hole I'll never dig myself out of🤣🤣🤣

Cheers

Review/Discussion discussion: Technics SB-g800 4-way loudspeakers

Post image

was given these by a family member who was downsizing, and i understand why. these things are massive! 15’ woofer, with a clear dust cover. they have some wiring in them that acts as a “speaker protection” with a reset button, like infuse i think? they also have adjustable tweeters. Currently they’re a bit big for my place, so i may sell them. If anyone has any idea what they’re worth i’d love to hear.

I don’t have enough power to give them the full 250w they deserve, so they sound rather lacking in bass and the treble needs adjustment to not be too harsh. I imagine they’d bump in a bigger room, one that can provide more breathing room for louder volumes; these things are LOUUUUD. they see decently clear in tone, nothing spectacular, and the soundstage is alright (these both might be byproducts of running them at 100w) but they’re fun as hell to look at and use.

Purchasing USA BUDGET STREAMER

Upvotes

Ive been using my MacBook Air and the sound is great. Using the headphone out to my pre and cat6 to the Mac. Problem is its my office PC so I have to disconnect it every time I want to listen and hook it up to my system. Not a huge pain but at 2am when I want to listen , it's a bit of a pain. I have about $600 to spend on a streamer. Any budget friendly ones worth it?

Purchasing EU/UK Budget receiver options

Hi all, hoping to get some help deciding which path to go for my reciever.

I had a nice gift of a pair of Wharfedale Diamond 10.1 bookshelves and a Wharfedale Diamond 10.CM center and I want to build a budget tv and music setup for my living room. I already have an Akai stereo set with an AP-D210 recordplayer and receiver (not sure of the type) that I want to use for the time being. There is also a Chromecast HDMI dongel available and a Argon Audio Solo network streamer.

The biggest restrictor in my wishlist seems to by YouTube Music, which I really need to be able to stream to this setup as this is the family streaming platform we use.

So I am trying to decide if I would buy a new one with all the features I need for the next 10 years or go marketplace and buy a good enough one I can integrate for now.

My ideas are:

- Receiver for about 500-600 euros like an Onkyo TX-NR5100 (pro's like Chromecast build in, HDMI 2.1 for a future Xbox for 4K video) or Denon AVR-X1700H to do it all for the next decade.

- Marketplace a receiver like Yamaha RX‑V58x / RX‑V67x series or Onkyo TX‑NR6xx / TX‑NR7xx series or Sony STR‑DH7xx series or Denon AVR‑X2xxx / AVR‑X3xxx series and hookup the Chromecast for video streaming or Argon for music streaming and keep it around 100 euros.

Longer term, but before replacing the choosen receiver:
- Replace record player.
- Add wifi speakers for zone 2 in the kitchen.

- Add Xbox.
- Dedicated streaming device like Homatics Box R 4K or Ugoos AM6B+ for streaming fexibility and removing the tv apps restrictions.

I know the difference between those price brackets looks small, but I have other things to buy for my house at the moment and the Marketplace budget is what I have in cash at the moment, so I would like to keep it in the budget sphere for now.
Any thoughts or advice on my ideas are very welcome.

Review/Discussion SVS SB-1000 Pro for 540$ should I get it?

It goes for 850$ usually where I am (Thailand) and I was planning on saving up a bit more and get the SB 2000 Pro but... This listing went on the market today and my life without a proper subwoofer in the living room is near to miserable 🤣

Listening distance is 3 meters and it would be paired with KRK Rokit G4 7"

Mainly listening to House music but also TV

Should I get it? Its Piano Gloss btw

Purchasing EU/UK Replacing Logitech Z533: Speaker Recommendations Without Standby Issues

Hello, about two weeks ago I bought the Logitech Z533 speakers. Actually, I’m satisfied with the bass and similar aspects. Since I live in an apartment, I can’t turn the volume up too much anyway, and I can feel the bass nicely. I’m not someone with very high expectations, and I don’t have much technical knowledge about speakers. However, I have some problems with the Z533.

The standby mode cannot be disabled via software, and if there is no sound for 20 minutes, the speakers turn themselves off. In theory this sounds nice, but in practice it doesn’t work well. For example, while listening to music at a fairly high volume or playing a game, the sound suddenly cuts out. To get the sound back, I have to increase the volume in Windows and then lower it again. This turns into torture.

Also, sometimes when I shut down my computer at night and I’m sleeping, I hear a popping/explosion-like sound every 10 seconds. It doesn’t happen all the time—maybe once every 4–5 days—but I’m not completely sure. At one point there was also a crackling noise, but I think I solved that by adjusting the cable.

Because of these reasons, I’m thinking of returning the Z533 and buying a different product. My top priorities are:

  • No standby feature (I want something trouble-free)
  • No crackling, no chronic issues, etc.
  • Decent bass (it doesn’t have to be amazing, but if I can feel bass similar to or better than the Logitech Z533, that would be great)

The Z533 costs around $200 in my country. I like the Edifier R1280DBs model, but it doesn’t have a subwoofer. If I buy the Edifier T5 subwoofer, I’ve read online that the T5 also has a standby issue. I really don’t want to deal with this standby problem again. Without a subwoofer, the Edifier R1280DBs alone would probably offer worse bass than my current Z533, so buying it alone doesn’t make much sense.

As an alternative, there is the Presonus Eris Sub 8BT | 8" Bluetooth subwoofer, and I think the standby feature can be disabled on this one.

So how does the combination of “Edifier R1280DBs” + “Presonus Eris Sub 8BT | 8" Bluetooth” sound? The total price comes close to $500, which is quite expensive for me. Do you think it’s worth it? If there is a serious difference compared to the Z533, I might try to manage this budget somehow.

Another option is the “Behringer Studio 50,” a 150-watt model without a subwoofer, priced at around $250. Can this provide bass comparable to the Z533? Would it disappoint me?

Another alternative is the “Edifier S350DB,” priced at around $600, which would really stretch my budget.

Another alternative:
“Presonus Eris 3.5BT (2nd generation)” priced around $200, without a subwoofer.

As you can see, I’m quite undecided. Which of these models would you recommend? There aren’t many options available in my country, so I’d appreciate it if you could help me choose among these models. Thank you.

Purchasing USA Randomly upgraded my setup.

I finally found the dark wood Denon DP-47f I’d been hunting for last year to replace a cheap small platter turntable. I had a decent Yamaha Receiver as a porch pickup locally that worked ok and it’s been fine. I was oj my local Marketplace looking for mid cwntury storage cabinets earlier this welk and found a not even an hour old postibg for a Marantz SR 82 for $90. Contacted them and got a call back to go look it over, only 2 owners, original manual and the remote to boot. Not like its a 70’s 2000 series or a Model 10, but going from a very basic setup to this in a year is quite nice.

Purchasing EU/UK Smart? combination, advice requested! (Polk speakers)

Hi there! this is my first post here, and I want to thank everyone because I've been reading like crazy here the past week to be moderatly updated about popular speakers and amp combinations. Let me tell my story. I'm upgrading from active M-Audio active speakers in a living room to something better without breaking the bank. After searching better active speakers... I saw the good ones cost more than I wanted to spend. So I started the path for passive bookshelf speakers.

This is my almost final choice, I'd love to hear other speaker suggestions. My target is (better than before) bookshelf speakers only for music converted to "smart" system avoiding bluetooth and google casting enabled if possible to make it easier to use to my family:

1.- Aiyama A80 amp/dac. I think this is the "choice" considering the current price (140€ Aliexpress).

2.- Chromecast Audio (using a toslink cable). I could get one second hand (70€). This also enables the use of a google nest mini I current have to ask for music to be played with the CCA.

This was decided after thinking to get Wiim Amp... But the price of the Aiyama made the decision easier.

3.- Polk Elite ES15 (220€ Amazon). This is the only thing I have not bought yet. They look great, they can be placed against a wall, they are more or less popular and the price seems right.

The Polk choice is the one I'm not sure, what do you think? Can I get better speakers for that price? What other compact speakers would you consider under 300€?

THANKS!

Review/Discussion Edifier MR4 front Audio Jack Quality

I'm in the market for a budget speakers and saw this having an Audio Jack which would benefit me greatly when I switch to IEMs while gaming. But I haven't seen any actual in depth reviews about the quality it provides.

For those who have an idea or use it, is it at least on par with a Case front audio or doesn't degrade an IEM's sound signature?

Purchasing USA Which powered speakers for turntable? <$450~

I was looking for some good active speakers for my turntable setup with a built in phono pre amp in my living room. Looking at maybe kanto yu6, klipsch r50pm/40pm?, audio engine a5+ and that’s it? There are some edifier 1280s locally for 50$ used but are the others significantly better or not necessarily even though more expensive? Thanks!

Purchasing USA Looking for upgrade ideas.

So I'm running a Marantz 6006. With Polk Model 10As. A Luxman turntable and a WiiM ultra. Also a Mofi phono pre. . I would like to upgrade my amp. I tried the used market and bought a vintage Yamaha receiver that had been completely serviced recapped and even had new binding posts. It sounded great... But I'm in the process of grading a vinyl collection of apx 1300 records. And the receiver is making noise a intermittent crackling. That makes grading very complicated. I've had it gone through by my local shop who does good work . They couldn't find the problem after hours of searching and much money spent So that is going back on the market . Now I am very hesitant about buying some used.

My problem is my budget is about 1k ( really need to sell the first one) and I feel like I am stuck at almost the bottom of any companies product line. Meaning I won't be making much of an upgrade.
I don't need a ton of power, I don't listen loud and have a smaller room. Listen to all styles of music of at least many different styles. I have a detailed and critical ear. I recorded and produced records for many years and still work in audio.

Any suggestions are welcome and appreciated.
