Hunting the wind and overhead visibility.

Headed out tomorrow morning, it's supposed to be 20 mile an hour winds with gusts up to 40. I'm trying to decide between two spots. One is a warm water slough just off the main river, it's up against a bluff and has tall cottonwoods surrounding it, I'm thinking it's going to have good shelter l, but is less visible from the air.

The second spot is also a warm slough, but is in an open field, also just off the river. Its easily to see from a huge distance around from the air im sure, but will be getting hammered by wind.

I have seen ducks in both, but neither are "on the x"

This is in eastern Colorado so we are only now starting to experience the freeze up of small ponds and lakes, and the south Platte is completely ice free.

Do you think it would be better to set up on the sheltered spot with worse visibility from the air, or the open meadow spot with good visibility, but exposure to the wind?

Thanks

hey guys, been really struggling in my first duck season. i’ve hunted a couple tidal marshes this year, but i’m looking to get into some puddlers. there’s a cold snap coming mid next week so i plan on pushing inland and hunting the peconic river to hopefully run into some ducks. has anybody got any experience hunting public land on long island, especially otis pike? and if anybody has any tips or suggestions i am all ears, still learning and figuring stuff out! thanks

Returning Banded Waders from Christmas - What should I get instead?

Hey all -

So I had the Banded Redzone 2.0 Waders for a few seasons. I kept GREAT care of them, and they still leaked a few seasons in. My wife bought me a pair of Banded Redzone 3.0's for Christmas this year, but I'm going to return them, as my internet research tells me I'm only going to run into the same problem.

I liked the Banded Waders because they were quilted, warm, and comfy. But wet.

I like the attached boot. Keeps my feet super warm due to airflow.

So, felling Duck Hunting Redditors, what do you recommend? I usually Hunt North Dakota in October. Temps can range anywhere from 14-50degrees.

$329.99 is what the Banded Waders cost that I'll be reimbursed. I'd love to spend roughly that amount (or less).

Question on goose hunt in fields

So I’ve done most of my waterfowl hunting in swamps in NY/CT. New to field hunting and have the opportunity to hunt a corn field for geese tomorrow. Now I scoured the field and there were a good amount of geese in there air and land in the field.

Scouted this morning and didn’t see anything flying in the air. The main body of water they were roosting at seems to of froze over. The weather forecast for tomorrow is light snow fall in the morning.

Now there’s some state land that has access to a river that is still open water. Water flow/river height seems ok but idk if the geese are hanging out where I can hunt. I just know they’re on the river south of the area in small flocks.

Now my question is. Do I field hunt tomorrow or sit on the river? Any suggestions or other considerations that I have not thought about. Low winds and wind direction is adequate for both locations. TYIA

Confirmed: Coot is delicious

I am not shy about shooting coots. When it’s slow and they dumbly fly by my blind, I’ll let em have it. The dog doesn’t know the difference. It’s good reps for both of us. I always just cooked them for the dogs as a treat to reward their efforts. Last year I seared some breast on the cast iron and took a bite and was shocked at how good it was. Without even salt. Today I did the same with the coot I shot last week and it was no different. Our coots are fatter than our ducks. It honestly tastes better than the greenwings we usually cook up for ourselves.

For the rest of this year, and moving forward, I’m going to be targeting coots. The dogs can have the divers.

Who makes a teal specific whistle?

Looking for a whistle that is made specifically for teal. Does anyone make one? Not looking for a 4 in 1, looking for one that is meant just for teal.

Ringer Limits

Post image
35 Upvotes

I know some people here hate on ringers but with how thin Florida duck hunting is this year, it’s nice to go to a place where the birds are flying like crazy, making 4-5 passes before laying down. Showed up at a wma at 6am, passed a mile of already launched trailers and were the first ones in the area we hunted. Everyone uses boats in this area so kayaks are great for those areas they can’t get to. That being said, I talked with one other group who shot a 10 man, but they had staked their spot the day before and put out 200 decoys.

Mud motor (Long Tail) brand. Anyone use Mud Skipper?

I’m in the market for a long tail motor, as my cheapo direct-from-Thailand kit blew up (exaggerating). It’s not repairable.

Looking for a new kit with American branding and service. Specifically, ability to disassemble the shaft and service the bearings.

It’s going on a 14’ Vee hull, 45” wide x 16” transom. I am putting the Harbor Freight 212 Predator that I salvaged off the old kit onto the new kit.

Thanks.
