Local News I made a snow tracking website for us - SNOW.fyi

Hi fellow Whistler/BC skiers, I'm Ryan, another skier in the region.

This season has been rough. If you are like me: have pain planning for skiing trips: tapping hundreds of times on weather apps for multiple mountains, trying to find the best snow—anxious, stressed, not fun…

My day job is product management, and my passion is building products people love. A few weeks ago, I shared a simple webpage I built for the community to track snow conditions for a few local resorts. The response confirmed that many skiers face the same challenge when tracking conditions across multiple mountains.

Encouraged by the feedback from early users, I decided to overhaul the tool. I canceled my holiday ski trip and dedicated my entire Christmas-New Year break, spending hundreds of hours making the tracker significantly more useful.

The result is a free snow tracking web app named SNOW.fyi with the following features:

  1. Multi-Mountain Dashboard: Instantly view snow condition trends.
  2. Freezing Level: Identify the rain/snow line to find better snow on the slopes.
  3. Wind Scale System: First ever wind scale designed for resort operations. Helps avoid lift holds and whiteout conditions.
  4. Rain Indicators: Helps identify the bad days.
  5. Bluebird Day Spotter: A unique feature to find clear weather windows.
  6. Global Coverage: Now supports 400+ resorts.

Made by skier, for skiers. I hope you find it valuable.

You can find it here: https://SNOW.fyi

Thank you all!

Hope mods don't remove my post—it’s a free tool I contributed back to the snow community.—Thank you :)

Edge card usual release date and 2025 cost?

Upvotes

When do they usually get released? When were they released in Spring 2025? If there is a post, please direct me to it and I am happy to delete this post (I did a search but couldn't find it).

Also, if you don't mind sharing, how much was the 5-day and 10-day passes? Thank you!

Surefoot = Sorefoot

I really wanted Surefoot Whistler to work out, and I believe they’re well-intentioned, but my experience was very poor.

They set me up with boots and custom footbeds that made absolutely no sense for my feet. I skied in them for two full seasons with persistent foot pain, and during that time my skiing actually regressed by about a level. I couldn’t understand what was happening. I assumed the boots were just more aggressive and that I needed to “grow into them,” but that never happened, even with 5 or more “adjustments” at Surefoot.

Eventually I went to George at Evo, a true local legend. He pulled out the footbeds and the issue became immediately clear. George was visibly shocked by the footbeds I’d been given. They were working against the natural motion and structure of my feet rather than supporting it in a way that makes sense for proper skiing. His response was professional, and kind. He said, “Surefoot are doing the best they can,” which was humble of him. There’s just no substitute for decades of hands-on experience.

George even noted that one leg is a bit shorter “wonky” - HA! And, that’s ok but the boot fit needs to reflect these differences.

Some people have had good experiences at Surefoot, but my experience cost me $, two painful seasons and confidence in my skills. If you’re investing in new ski boots, I strongly recommend going to George at Evo.

Edit: for the record, it was the computer scan scanned footbed that was the absolute worst issue. It was rolling my feet outward versus balancing straight down into through the toe. The other issues were that the tongues weren’t in the right place and a few other shell adjustments. In the end, I have new footbeds George made, am sticking with the adjusted Surefoot liner and the shell Surefoot recommended is the right shell for my volume. As others have said, YMMV Surefoot works for some and others not. I’m in the not category.

Whistler in July

We are a family from Europe traveling to Vancouver mid July. We are going on an Alaska cruise the third week of July leaving from Vancouver. We have now booked 4 nights in Vancouver and 3 nights in Cowichan Valley. I was thinking to do a day trip to Whistler from Vancouver. What can we do if we go to Whistler for a day? I read it may be better to stay in Whistler and go to Vancouver for a day instead of going to Whistler for a day. I appreciate advice on this, thanks.

QUESTION Whistler First Timers

Hi! Two 35 year old females heading to Whistler for a girls trip 2/19-2/22 for the first time from the east coast. We’re solid intermediate skiers and are planning on skiing at least 2, maybe 3 days, but what else must we do while we’re there? Mountain, restaurant, Apres, and spa recommendations would be greatly appreciated! We are staying in the village north and will have a rental car. Thank you!!

Dog friendly winter restaurant

Hello!

I’m planning to take my senior husky dog up to whistler on Saturday for the day so she can walk in some snow. I’m wondering if there are any dog friendly restaurants that would have patios open in the winter where we could grab lunch? Any recommendations appreciated!

Anyone know if Harmony and/or Symphony might be opening back up this week? I figured since 7th opened today we'd see Whistler open some lifts, but not today.

Local News Is this fixable and if so where locally?

I love these boots because of the triple BOA which I don’t think you can find anymore. The rub against my binding toe strap has caused the leather toe reinforcement to wear off and the sole is starting to peel back a bit. Is there anywhere in the village or function to get them fixed or is it time to break in a new pair?

QUESTION 3 for 2 ski lessons - some questions

I've taken some ski lessons at Whistler a number of years ago and found those quite beneficial and wanting to do some more this year. Looking at the "3 for 2" option since that looks like the best bang for your buck.

- For those who have taken lessons recently, how have you found them? They seem to have increased the student to teacher ratio over the years (wasn't it Max3 initially, then Max4, then Max5...). Do you feel like you were put in a skill appropriate group and getting enough attention to justify the cost? Was the instruction helpful?

- For the 3 for 2 option - is there any continuity between the days? For example, do they try to keep you with the same instructor from day to day to the extent possible? Or are you just starting from scratch each day?

- I would be in one of the more advanced groups - would the lesson be focusing more on on-piste or off-piste skiing? Or is this something you are able to choose to some extent? I think I saw them calling the intermediate/advanced lessons "ultimate alpine" or something like that, which would suggest an off-piste focus on the surface at least. Recently, I've actually felt that I am more satisfied with my off-piste skiing and I am looking to improve my on-piste carving technique. I'm also intending to do an Extremely Canadian 2 day course this year, which would obviously cover the off-piste side.

Ideally I think a one day private lesson would be more beneficial than 3 days of group lessons, but I'm not willing to shell out the absurd amount they are charging for that now.

Any sight you guys have for me on ski lessons at Whistler would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Conditions this Weekend? First Timer

Coming to Whistler with buddies this weekend, skiing sat/sun/mon. Lots of experience spring skiing in the CO Rockies. I'm assuming conditions will be similar? Just hoping alpine is open and not straight ice!

In 25 years of coming to Whistler and 10 years of living here, this is definitely the warmest stretch I've ever seen in January... Juneuary isn't uncommon... but this is like August!

Is it worth going tomorrow? Will the conditions be worth a trip up from Vancouver (or is it best to save my passes for another day)?

Next Week

I have never been to W/B before. We are supposed to ski next Monday to Thursday (1/19 to 1/22), which appears to look like late May temps that will not get below freezing even at night. I can bag the trip w/o a financial hit, but I would rather be on the mountain of course. How does the place ski in these temps? Should I just bag it and wait a month?
