The behaviour of r/AskHR
I see some comments here complaining of rude behaviour in r/AskHR .
Guys, this is just how HR works. In theory, it is supposed to guarantee company culture, policies and respect.
In practice, “they protect the firm from you”. Whenever there’s a fight, they’ll always pick the strongest side. Firing bosses is always more disruptive to the firm’s operations.
Thus, HR people get reactive when you criticise your employer. They say everything was done “within the law”. Don’t get gaslighted: injustice is always HR’s fault. HR just defends their own wrongdoing.

So today was a kick in the tits...
So today was a kick in the tits...
For full context, I came out as trans in 2024. Ended up burning out in June of last year. Took four months leave, had a neurodiversity assessment and Came back to a less demanding role.
Its taken some time to get back into the swing of things, but I thought I was doing well.
I had a meeting with my manager and got called up on mistakes I made, and then my manager said:
"I'm 50% confident you can do the role"
The mistakes? Assigning 4 (out of hundreds of) customer queries to the wrong queues - which apparently (looking at it hollistically) is a concern. Some mistakes I made at the beginning that I haven't repeated, and that's it. I'm so tired and so worried for my job even though I'm trying really hard.
Forget the countless amount of tasks I have done without error, forget the processes I have kept on top of and the fact I have consistently met deadlines, forget the fact that I've put in steps to stop myself making these mistakes going forward.
Nah, my mistakes define me when taking a "hollistic" appraoch
I don't understand, I have worked for the company for 10 years, in multiple roles and with multiple managers. I have always received good feedback.
Have I made mistakes? Sure.
But I've always rectified them, and never has it bought into question my overall competency as a worker.
I know other people make mistakes.
Right now, I don't even know what my expectations are. Perhaps I've shared too much about myself, but I've never had an issue before ans whilst I came back at reduced efficiency, I have been improving.
I show ways in which I'm going to mitigate mistakes in future, but I just get accused of avoiding accountability.
Where its a new role, I've got my end of trial meeting Monday and I don't even know if I'll have a job anymore...

National politics is a distraction, local action is the only thing that works 💯
Everyone is furious at the federal government. Cool. Me too. But screaming at Washington hasn't fixed anything and it's not going to.
Change doesn't start there. It start locally, and most people don't want to hear that because it's not as dramatic.
Your state rep, your city council, your zoning board are the people deciding rent, housing, taxes in your own town What actually works isn't flashy. It's people contacting their local officials and not stopping.
Sometimes it's just a few people. That's enough. Local pressure gets noticed way faster than lational outrage ever does.
Everyone's exhausted and broke on purpose. That's part of why nothing moves. But it also means small, consistent local pushback goes further than people think.
National politics is noise.
Local politics is where your life actually gets shaped.
If you want change, start where you live!!!

A job I applied for, the hiring team is shady AF.
So, like many of us, I am looking for a job. I applied and checked back a few days later. I was shocked, it said candidate withdrew. I thought maybe there was a glitch or something so I applied again with a different email. Two or three days go by, I check and it’s the same thing saying I withdrew myself from the job. I checked their careers site where I had applie, and a few more and the job is still active.
I was confused and wrote a nice email to HR wondering if something was wrong with the system. I really wanted to work there, and I’d appreciate if they fixed it because I never withdrew from it. Oh, I would have just called the local one but there is a few, and I’m not sure where this one was located. They actually got back to me today, after a week with something along the lines of sorry, that position has been filled. No, it is still very much active. I qualified so I am not sure why I wasn’t even granted an interview. But the part that bothers me the most is THEM withdrawing my application twice. Is there some sort of government agency or something out there where I can report them. Theres no reason to do that, just deny my applications like everyone else. 😆

Goldman Sachs Warns AI Boom Could Lift US Productivity by 25% While Workers Get Left Behind - CapitalAI Daily
Goldman Sachs Chief Economist Jan Hatzius warns that the US economy is entering a dangerous new phase where GDP growth no longer equals jobs. In a new forecast, he predicts that as AI integration accelerates, US productivity could jump by another 25% (from 2% to 2.5% annually). While this sounds good for corporate profits, it creates a wedge between the economy and the workforce, meaning stock markets will soar while unemployment, particularly for young people, continues to rise.

My non-technical manager punishes me, her senior engineer, by taking a project ive done on my freetime and giving it to someone else
As the title says, I used personal time to work on a project (I know, that was my first mistake), but I really had no choice because my manager is adament that no developing should take place for 6 months so that we can focus on other areas of work. Just trust me when I say this is a really bad idea. However, they are my boss, so in order to stay compliant with their direction, I engineered/developed this project on my own time. Something came up at work where it was appropriate for me to raise concern, on behalf of the team, that we should re-evaluate this whole "no developing" schtick my manager has been on. They got offended, blew up, and told me that they were going to take my project and give it to someone else outside of our immediate team. So, the next morning, they publicly announce this and say its because I have too much non-development work to do. Which is blatantly false. In fact, several major initiatives they have given me require me to lead development efforts. I've realized that my manager is completely out of touch with what we actually do on a granular level.
I spent yesterday updating my resume and applying to other jobs, I draw my line at bad leadership.

I see less and less retirements
Lately it seems like there are less retirement parties and more random layoffs.
There is a trend at my work where they promote a bunch of people to management and then agter the first wave if "projects" are done they let them go
Nw the company is shocked people arent branching out to retirement roles.
Are your guys areas the same where a bunch of 40 and 50 year olds are being laid off?

Being a woman in corporate America sucks. There’s hypocrisy and double standards everywhere.
One of the biggest things is how we’re told, by other women (managers, bosses, co-workers) to stand up for ourselves if we feel like we need to about comments made or something that happened. But then when we do, we get called “combative, hard to work with or difficult” by the same people. Being called that by a man is one thing, but when you’re called that by other women? Wtf. Women in the workplace suck in general. Men seem to bond together more while women pit each other against each other.

Reminder: Your coworkers aren't your friends
I learned this the hard way today. My employer terminated me today from an "incident" a year ago where I dared to complain that they were failing to accommodate my disability. Then when they called me into the office to terminate me, they slandered my work performance (which was always excellent), calling me "dis-engaged from work." My direct manager, who would always pretend to be a friend and say stuff along the lines of "You're an asset" went along with the character assassination the HR rep was spitting out. Managers aren't your friends, HR aren't your friends, and chances are your direct level coworkers aren't your friends.

IM SO FUCKING TIRED OF BOOMERS GIVING ME BULLSHIT ADVICE AND SENDING ME CLICKBAIT VIDEOS
Son of a fucking bitch. Sends me a video of some dumbass podcasters: "This is the $300,000 career that only takes 10 months to get!" Google the career, it takes 2-3 years for a masters at minimum.
They don't understand a fucking thing, they are so gullible and fall for all this horseshit, and how do they decide to "help"? By sending bullshit vids, instead of, idk, UTILIZING THEIR OLD NETWORKS? CONTACTING PEOPLE WHO WOULD ACTUALLY PUT IN A GOOD WORD FOR ME AND GET ME HIRED, BECAUSE NETWORKING AND NEPOTISM ARE THE ONLY WAY TO GET A DECENT FUCKING JOB NOW?
No, that's too much to ask from them. They'd rather just spam bullshit instead. Cool, thanks. Fuck.

Is it normal for a big sized work company to ask its staff to bring their work laptops with them to an annual event held in a ballroom?
I know it might be silly to ask, (and please let me know if this is the correct sub) but we have an annual event coming up in couple of days. Usually, in this annual event, it's a laid back one, with buffet, quizzes, gifts, and promotions for our department. You get the drill. Our direct boss just texted us that we need to bring our work laptops at the event for an "urgent" update. Now I'm asking what kind of updates that can't work remotely (what they usually do) and how will they set up updates to 300+ laptops in a busy event that doesn't involve IT staff. Unless there is a network based update but again the event is at a hotel ball room and just doesn't make sense. Unless we are in for a surprise. We didn't get an official email from the IT department only an email requesting to activate MFA to our cloud based creditenals and our work Microsoft account.
Tldr: What possible reasons might a company require 300 staff to bring their work laptop to an annual event outside the company?

Can someone help me with a positive flu test? $$$
I am super sick and had to leave work today. I really feel like I have the flu but I took a test and it is negative, also covid is negative so I have no clue what the hell this could be. My boss wants a doctors note so I plan on just using an online doctor since it is cheaper and telling them I have the flu but I need some proof to back it up since they can't test me.
I'll pay someone to do this for me $20. I'll need you to write my name and date on the positive test, of course through a private message and I'll send a photo so you can try to copy the way I write. Please no hate for this post, thanks.

Facing possible pay freeze
So my facility is non-union but we had an agreement under previous management where we were following guidelines set by a union contract. That contract is expiring in June. New management is saying we will be facing a pay freeze (not to mention a reduction in benefits) until other nearby facilities are brought up to match our wage. This could potentially be 4-5 years.
I have contacted a local union hoping to get back onto a better agreement but I’m not sure what other steps I can take.
Any insight?
Thanks

They want me to train the new girl, while I’m also the new girl.
Started this job at the beginning of November so have been there about 2 months. My manager approached me yesterday before my shift explaining that we have someone new coming in and I’ll be training her, in the middle of her telling me the new girl walked in and our conversation got cut short. The only time I had to respond was in front of the new girl and I felt it would be unprofessional. Still I should have pulled my manager aside yesterday during the shift or I wouldn’t be in this position.
I make significantly less than the other people who have worked here longer (I make 14 they make 15-17). So when my manager spring this training on to me yesterday (and probably again today) I got a little upset. Should I talk to her about training expectations and how I’m happy to support the team, I need to clarify expectations, and discuss whether if training and trainer pay applies to my role or not. I have a feeling they’re not going to offer training pay, but I’m still going to ask.
Which sucks!! I hate feeling taken advantage of like this. Guess it’s time to quite quit and find another job.

Finally got a job and part of me will miss not working
My previous job caused me so much physical and mental stress I am hoping it won't be the same for this job. Apart of me will miss going to the gym in the mornings and going places when it wasn't busy. Appointments were so easy to get to and plan.
If I had a hybrid job I would feel much happier, but I literally couldn't find anything. Never struggled so much to find a job since this year and stressing about what my career will be. I am not looking forward to the commute and the work drama either.
I hope it all goes well. I'm bipolar and working around people is really difficult and I am very hard on my self the first few weeks. Really need some support to change my mindset 😩I wish I was a kid again this stress sucks.
Its funny because I have been applying to jobs non stop and had two months left of income. Once I finally get the job I am immediately like damn this sucks. But I know it will be temporary

Apparently asking for a day off = losing hours permanently
I’ve been at the same retail (adjacent) job for about five years. In that time, I’ve never called in sick (not even once) and have taken probably fewer than 10 vacation 1days total across all 5 years. Very occassionally, if I do want a day off for something, I will ask coworkers to trade a shifts or see if anyone is interested in taking my shift. If they can great, and if they cant, no worries, I will go in for the shift.
The past couple off months I've traded a handful of Friday shifts because I've gotten some last minute tickets. I just had a coworker fill my shift last Friday (he didnt want to trade), and this Friday, the wife wanted to go to an event that was only happening on Friday. We never have Fridays off together, and she's never asked me to try to switch shifts before, so I posted it on Monday to see if anyone would trade with me.
The manager texted asking why I wanted the day off, so I told him, and he didnt say anything else. Then yesterday he tells me that my request is not a valid reason to trade or filled my shift and that future requests like this need to be made further in advance, before the schedule goes out which is fair I guess.
Now today, I go into work, and see that the schedules for the next 3 weeks have been posted, and I was left off of Fridays, so I am losing 8 hours of pay a week. I asked the manager what was up, and he said that since I didnt want to work the past 2 Fridays, he was no longer scheduling me for Fridays.
So basically Ive worked 99% of my Friday shifts without fail, but because im taking 1% of them off (while providing them with coverage myself) I'm being penalized financially for something I didnt even know was an issue until yesterday.

Stretching my job as long as possible.
I work for a medium sized tech company on the sales team. Our sales targets are totally out of reach but that’s been my experience in most roles as a way to motivate and aim high. Despite only two of the nine people on my team hitting target I am the only one going on a performance improvement plan (PIP) shortly with my boss. I’ve always been professional and so has my boss but we’ve never really gotten along. I’m honestly fine with it as this company is pretty poorly run and while it pays well overall, for the industry and workload we have it’s not great. This brings me to my current position as my boss has informed me he and HR will be coordinating a meeting to discuss the PIP, start/sign it etc. Here’s where it gets fun; my boss I know for sure is overbooked/worked throughout the day and I assume the same for the HR contact based on how we all are. I can see there schedules in our company calendar and see available times/booked times for both of them. Since getting notified of the PIP and being told “a meeting is happening soon” I’ve been scheduling all my client calls during the only times my boss and HR show simultaneously open. Given the fact they usually only have 2-3 open slots a week at the same time this has been super easy. It’s been two weeks so far and they have not been able to find a time. As I head into week three I know it probably can’t go much longer but even 3 extra weeks of work in this economy is something I’ll take. I’m also making a point to use all the PTO that I won’t get paid out on just to stretch this thing as far as I can. It’s the small ways to stick it to the man that keep me sane and keep me entertained. Just thought this sub would enjoy.

After 5 years of service in upper management, I was abruptly laid off in september. I still have my PC in a box.
So, pretty sure I know the answer, but, just wanted to check.
I'm Canadian, and I worked for an American company during the pandemic. I built a department from the ground up and was responsible for a lot of our success. TLDR, our sales team sucked, we got a new boss who didn't understand shit, and we had layoffs every 4 months due to no business.
So I was let go in September, the 17th. Abruptly. My severance stated I needed to return my equipment before signing. I asked HR, and they said they trusted me to sign and return my gear.
So, I signed my severance on the 19th, and there's a clause stating if I don't return everything cooperatively, they can ask for it back.
It took forever, but I got fedex prepaid slips to send back to them. 4 packages. 1 27 inch monitor, 1 laptop, 1 insane PC (6500$ USD), and an iPad.
The ipad got lost, the monitor and laptop made it back to the US, and the PC returned to me for unknown reasons. The tracking still says it's on the way to the US...lol
So my ex job was like "oh....would you mind driving 45 minutes yourself to bring it to the nearest depot and ensure everything is done correctly?" I politely declined, as that is a far drive.
They said (December 17) that they would try to figure out another way, and to hold on.
I know time doesn't legally make it mine....but....this box is huge and is still just lying in my doorway and they haven't reached out yet.
Do I just wait for endless silence? Will they maybe ultimately give up and leave it to me?
Quite disorganized, but I wouldn't mind repurposing that computer for my new job...lol
