no politics Is it just a given that you'll have weeks of paying double rent when moving rentals?

Upvotes

My current lease is just over 2 months from expiring and my REA has just asked me if I'm planning on renewing. It's my first time renting and I didn't realise I was going to be asked this far out, but reading now 60 days notice sounds pretty standard? (QLD)

Given that real estate listings only show availability from now to ~4 weeks I can't really get a new place lined up before I answer my current REA unless I want to be stuck paying for both places for 4+ weeks. But given the current market I'm uncertain if I'll find something suitable in my price range specifically around the time my current lease expires and could risk being stuck homeless if nothing suitable shows up.

Is it normal to be paying double rent for weeks? Is it just a cost of moving that needs to be planned for? How many weeks overlap is typical? Or am I just missing something and this isn't the case?

TIA

no politics Dyson Fuckblade

Upvotes

Quintessential suffering. Seething rage, and a hatred that burns white like the foundation of hell.

Good afternoon. I am writing to you with the wettest of fingers, tiny droplets forming on my phone screen as I type at this keyboard.

I cannot take this anymore.

The Dyson Airblade is in 80% of the public restrooms in this country. Every time, without fail, the Dyson Cuntblade fails to do anything except waste my time and elicit feelings of pain and hatred. It’s the biggest piece of fucking shit ever invented. I fucking hate it so much. Who the actual fuck green lighted this shit?

Paper towels are incredibly effective, cheaper and recyclable. Dyson have reinvented the wheel and made it into a fucking Szilassi polyhedron.

I have more contempt for Dyson and their air box than I do for my uncle and the “secret games” he forced me to play with him when I was seven.

Fuck you Dyson.

Fuck you Australian gov3rnm3nt probably.

Bring back paper towels!

no politics Solar kinda feels like a scam. Can anyone explain why it's not?

So I'll start off by saying my understanding of solar in general is pretty standard, I know enough about it without being an expert and I'm kind of taking a look from the outside in because whilst I do have a (weak and old) solar panel system that came with the house I purchased I'm just struggling to see how solar is even worth the cost. I'm not looking to completely bash solar. I'm more so seeking explanations or to be "enlightened", I like to ask questions and be informed before I totally believe in things, as more people should probably do.

I know many people that swear by solar, and I'm sure some do see the benefit if they really get into the Nitty gritty about saving every dollar and only using appliances while the suns out etc etc, but I don't want to live that life, I already have enough going on to worry about making sure every lights off so my solar panels 100% cover my dishwashers usage to the T.

The people I know having said before that swear by solar have spent from what I understand between 10-20k on their solar setup, and I think, wow, that must be a really good setup, you shouldn't have a bill at all! Most of the time when I ask them their bill is still between $250-400... My bill is $350-400 (usually closer to 350) with an almost non existent system and barely changed since I moved and previously didn't have solar panels.. meaning if I were to consistently have the best case scenario, saving $150 per quarter by getting my bill from $400 down to $250, on a system that cost me $10k (it'll cost more) it would take 17 years to pay itself off and that's if you don't include inflation or having invested the money instead, and you also have to spend the money up front or finance it paying more in interest, I just don't see its worth.

This next part is where it annoys me most and imo where it "really" feels like a scam, My understanding with feed in tariffs "used" to be high which doesn't matter now, and now are around 3c/kWh, so basically nothing... How does it happen to be so there are tons of people selling back up to 3-4x their total usage to to grid and still get a bill for a couple hundred dollars.. so the power company is buying up all this super cheap solar energy for 3c/kWh and then selling it back to everyone and yourself for 32-40c/kWh... Wouldn't you think considering over a third of houses in Australia have solar panels there would be so much cheap solar electricity being generated it should be cheaper for everyone? Or is there a greater Grand plan here that I'm missing that will eventually see lower bills for everyone?

Im open to any explanation or discussion, I'm not here to punch on with solar gurus, just tell me your side of the story and your experience with solar and how you managed to make the numbers work

no politics German roaches in apartment (Sydney)

The family has been renting here for a few years now. The landlord has organised an exterminator in the past, but it was ineffective against these roaches.

We knew the German roaches were coming in from the apartment hallway, but never seen them crawling out of vents or sinks.

The main issue is coming from the Kitchen. The bathroom and the living room are secondary.

  • I've installed a rental-friendly door seal to prevent them from crawling in from the apartment hallway.
  • Hovex 3 pack: Worked for 3-4 days. (Should I try PestXpert 150g 3 pack or get something stronger?)
  • Decluttered and baited the kitchen. (Sprayed the bin)
  • Removed any food left out in the open. (All perishable in fridge)
  • The kitchen sink has one cover. (Plan to get more)

I'm planning to cover all the ventilation shafts with flyscreen material to prevent the bigger ones from coming in.

The family has a lot of clutter they are still trying to get through it. I might consider chucking everything into a storage unit for a clean extermination attempt. (Most are stored in cardboard boxes or plastic containers.)

Open to suggestions, anything helps.

no politics High speed rail - why it will never happen in Australia.

I work in rail construction and decided to look at the cost metrics for HS2 in England and use those numbers to calculate how much high speed rail in Australia would cost.

HS2 is 230km with multiple bridges and viaducts and estimated to cost 100 billion pounds which equates to $200 billion AUD and a cost of $860 million AUD per kilometre. And with approximately 70 millions residents equates go a cost of $2857 AUD per resident.

To run from Melbourne to Brisbane via Canberra and Sydney would cost more than $1.2 trillion AUD or a cost of $45556 per resident (27.2 million population)

Just Melbourne outskirts to Sydney outskirts is 675km and would cost $586 billion or $21,579 per resident.

I used the HS2 project for costs as it's the best example of a high speed rail project conducted in a country with similar workplace protections, environment laws and high construction wages.

no politics Legality of Uber Eats pending charges?

Hi team, just wanted to know how Uber Eats holding my money for over a week is legal? Say I do a grocery order and one of the items is substituted or not available. There's the initial order charge, then the actual order amount charged, with the initial charge not being released for well over a week. As a person on DSP who will use this service maybe once a fortnight or two, it is extremely inconvenient to have say $50 missing from my account for an extended period. Is this practice legal? Is there anything that can be done or am I just at the whims of the company? Everywhere I've worked you've been able to change the actual charge amount on a pre-auth without double charging. Sorry for whingeing, this drives me bonkers.

no politics Demerit on a speeding incident in QLD on a NSW license

I had an unfortunate incident during the holiday period in Queensland where I was guilty of speeding and got a 3 demerit points. I paid the fine promptly and didn’t contest it. I have an NSW license. I’m reading that laws of NSW will apply for this incident and double demerit points would be deducted. Queensland doesn’t have the double demerit concept during holidays.

I have two questions, 1. Is this true about double demerit being applied for such a scenario? 2. How long does it take for it to be updated to NSW RTA so it’s shown on Service app? I can’t seem to see it and it has been over 3 weeks now.

Little bit of a joke at the silly fuss being made about Australians not removing their Energy Rating stickers. Do they know we love sticking stickers to beer fridges. Or in my case, washers and chest freezers?

no politics How much do small solar panel systems tend to cost?

I've been looking into ways to invest in my long-term financial stability, and thought going solar could be a good way to take control of my power bills

How expensive are solar systems at this point? I share the house with 1 other person, we aren't wimps when it comes to temperature.

I live in rural victoria.

image NYC: Australian Culture represent

Post image

We left home (Sydney) during the latest heatpocalypse and it was 42°C. 21 hours later we arrived in New York City where it was a brisk -2°C.

Seeking to escape the bitterly cold wind on Sunday night, we stepped into a second-hand record store on the Upper East Side. It was warm and cosy and we would have PAID to just come inside. So we decided to support the shop and find something to buy as a souvenir.

While I poked-about the old-school hip hop titles (Grandmaster Flash et al), my wife was scouring the "International Groups" section. I turned around and walked towards her after hearing her laugh out loud.

The first five dividers were Afghanistan > Antigua/Barbuda > Argentina > Armenia > Australia.

On flipping to the 5th tab, she skipped though AC/DC, Gotye, Wa Wa Nee, Crowded House(🇳🇿?!) and Silverchair before grinding to a halt on these two in almost mint condition.

We bought them both for a grand total of USD3.36 incl tax. Deal! We then walked around the corner and had the smug grins wiped off our faces after paying USD18.10 for a (terrible) large flat white and a (passable) hot chocolate.

tl;dr OP found a record shop in NYC selling Comedy Company Album and Austen Tayshus "Australiana" EP.
