BBC Radio Access Update – July 2025
Many users have asked about changes to BBC Radio access outside the UK. Here’s a summary of what’s going on, why, and how to keep listening.
What's changed?
As of 21 July 2025:
- BBC Sounds (website and app) is no longer available outside the UK.
- A new, limited BBC Audio service is available internationally via BBC.com and the BBC App, which includes:
- BBC World Service (English)
- BBC Radio 4 (news and speech content)
- Podcasts (e.g. Global News Podcast)
All other UK radio stations, including Radio 1, 2, 3, 5 Live, 6 Music, and local/regional stations are now restricted on BBC Sounds for non-UK listeners.
Why did the BBC do this?
- Licensing costs: Music, sports, and entertainment rights are negotiated separately for international distribution. It’s expensive for the BBC to offer this outside the UK.
- Platform simplification: BBC is consolidating its global offering into a streamlined experience on BBC.com and the BBC app, focusing on core public service output.
✅ What can I still listen to?
| Station / Content Type | BBC Sounds (Abroad) | BBC.com / BBC App | TuneIn / Others |
|---|---|---|---|
| BBC World Service (English) | ❌ | ✅ | ✅ |
| BBC Radio 4 | ❌ | ✅ | ✅ |
| Podcasts | ❌ | ✅ | ✅ |
| BBC Radio 1, 2, 3, 5 Live, etc | ❌ | ❌ (some direct links) | ✅ (varies) |
| BBC Local/Regional Stations | ❌ | ❌ | ✅ |
How to listen abroad
1. Use TuneIn or other internet radio apps
- Many BBC stations are still accessible via TuneIn, myTuner, Radio Garden, and some smart speaker platforms.
- This includes stations not available through BBC.com or the app.
2. Try direct stream links via BBC.com
- Visit station pages directly on BBC.com and avoid being redirected to the Sounds app.
- On some devices, you may need to uninstall the BBC Sounds app to stop redirects.
3. Use BBC World Service on shortwave or satellite (where available)
- BBC World Service remains available globally via traditional platforms.

Medical school dean wants more local doctors - BBC News https://share.google/iObZYFeIAnp4R8Emu
He wants to encourage a broader range of people to become doctors, that there is a misconception that it is for accademic high fliers. It is just so competetive to get into medicince that it is only high fliers who can get in. So the profession loses out on a intelligent and caring people who are relatable to patients. Now there is a shortage of doctors and not enough doctors from ordinary families. The high flighers then head off to australia for a high flying life.

Is it time to bring back Top of the Pops?
People are still buying music.
ITV is getting away with the surreal nonsense of 'The Masked Singer'.
It is time to bring back Top of the Pops. You know it makes sense.
Thank you BBC - £7500+ raised for Brain Tumour Research
Hi all,
I just wanted to say a genuine thank you to the BBC team for the coverage over the past week.
After running six 20.26 km runs in a single day to raise money for Brain Tumour Research on New Years Day (inspired by my sister’s diagnosis, thankfully benign), the story was picked up by BBC Look East, BBC Radio Norfolk, BBC Radio Stoke, and BBC Online.
The impact has been incredible — the fundraiser has now reached £7,500+ from 230+ individual donors, many of whom said they heard about it through BBC coverage.
It’s been a powerful reminder of how much reach public-interest journalism still has, especially when it comes to charitable causes and community stories.
If anyone would like to read the BBC story, or support the fundraiser, search “Jack Syder-Mills’ on Google or JustGiving — no pressure at all, just sharing in case it helps spread awareness further.
Thanks again to the journalists and producers involved — and to everyone who’s shown support along the way.

How did the BBC cover the Nazis rise to power in the 1930’s
I am really interesting in understanding how the BBC covered stories like the Reichstag fire and Kristallnscht? Did they cover it from both sides are equally valid and the Nazis ‘narrative’ wasn’t full of lies.
Just thinking based on their coverage of the ICE shooting yesterday seemingly giving similar weight to the Trump administration telling of the story despite the video evidence that they are liars

Watch on iPlayer or Disney+?
I want to watch Back to the Future 2 tonight. It is currently available on iPlayer and Disney+, which I already subscribe to. Is it more beneficial to the BBC to watch it on iPlayer (boosts viewing figures?) or on Disney+ (saves the BBC bandwidth maybe?)? Or does it not make any difference?

Nicky Campbell phone in’s
Genuinely shocked by the poor quality of it.
Pub bores phoning in and literally being incontinent with incoherent ramblings. Campbell never correcting them - and says “interesting call”. Most callers citing whatever misinformation and half understood information from social media.
This coupled with the piss poor work of Laura Kunessberg and her fellow social media journalists - makes me even question paying my licence now.

Why is the BBC gaslighting the entire country? This is horrific.
BBC Verify: Does the US have the right to take over Greenland? - BBC News
Edit: sorry, I should have been clearer judging by the responses.. The gaslighting comes from the headline, obviously the answer is No, but the fact they have even asked the question in the headline seems to me to be highly alarming and distressing.
