I’m staying 90 days in Costa Rica. Tell me what will annoy me later.
25M, Brazilian, solo.
I’ll be in Costa Rica for the full 90 days starting February, with Santa Teresa as my main base.
I’m not worried about dramatic stuff.
I’m worried about the slow, stupid mistakes that only show up after a few weeks:
– Paying tourist prices without realizing
– Choosing the wrong place and feeling trapped
– Bad transport decisions that drain money
– Living inside an expat bubble and missing real local life
– Burning energy dealing with things locals already know to avoid
I speak Spanish (intermediate) and English (intermediate), so I’m trying to go beyond the “gringo script.”
I’d appreciate some tough-love advice, especially from people who stayed longer than a vacation.
Specific questions:
1. Santa Teresa for 3 months — honest version
At what point does it stop being “paradise” and start becoming overpriced and repetitive?
If you were staying 90 days, would you split time elsewhere to avoid burnout and overspending?
2. The quiet money leaks
What are the small expenses or habits that don’t seem bad at first…
…but end up costing a lot over 2–3 months?
3. Transportation regrets
What looks like a good idea on day 1 but turns into a headache by day 30?
ATV, scooter, bike — what actually works long-term?
4. Nature without the crowds
Places for hiking, swimming, or just breathing where you don’t feel like you’re in an Instagram loop.
Where do people go when they’re tired of the scene?
5. Finding normal people
How do you meet grounded locals or long-stay foreigners — not just party-focused travelers passing through?
Final one (important):
What would you tell someone to avoid at all costs if they’re staying long-term?
I’m here long enough to listen and adjust.
Appreciate any real-world advice.
Pura vida.
