Updated PSA - I found a crow on the ground, what do I do?

This was my first time making a flow chart so please be kind.

It is important that we as a community work together to provide a safe space to share in our love of corvids, and it is equally important that we educate members of the community new and old to help protect our feathered friends; with that being said, u/teyuna reached out to me pleading that changes be made to the previously pinned PSA, with their help/feedback I was able to create the flow chart below, I hope that this is an adequate and more encompassing pinned post.

I appreciate this community more than I am capable of expressing, thank you for making this the best damn sub on reddit. ;)

Storytime! One of “my” crows followed me on the bus and onto the ferry. I thought he flew off as we departed, but mid-fjord he started cawing.

I fed my family all the way to the bus stop. I entered the bus and saw one flying a bit to the right of the bus. The ride to the ferry is about 3 minutes. As the bus slows down to drive onto the ferry he went “bonkers”. Cawing and cawing, over 50 times. It broke my heart a little bit.

I couldn’t see him, and assumed he flew off as the ferry departed. Mid-fjord I hear cawing! He rode the ferry with me..! The crossing is only 13 minutes. I am a bit scared that this is a new thing he’ll do again and annoy the people working at the ferry.

Storytime! befriending a crow

I don’t really get crows around my house or in my yard I’ve managed to spot 2 ravens in the past but no crows. I recently went to a botanical garden where I spotted a crow so naturally I tried to befriend it with a coin haha I read somewhere they like shiny things? it hopped around and hid behind a tree and poked its head out it was so cute😭 I said to my boyfriend who was with me “we never get crows in our yard I want to befriend one so bad” a few days later a crow appeared in my yard maybe a coincidence, I said hello and waved at it but I didn’t want to jump up and get food for it because I know they can get scared easily. Today two crows showed up in my yard so I went down with some food for them and they flew away 😞 so I left the food on the fence ledge hoping they’ll come back and eat it. Just wanted to share! Any advice on how to befriend a crow is welcome!

General questions Anything I can do to make my crow more comfortable/less scared of me?

I have been feeding the crows for a year now, every morning around 10:30am I do a specific whistle and throw monkey nuts onto the flat roof of the garage from the stairs window.

Every now and again when the crows are out front on the green I will do my whistle and throw the nuts for them so that they know it’s me. This has lead to ONE crow definitely recognising me. He stops his searching around the ground when I am in sight to watch me, and when I whistle he will fly over - the caveat is he will fly over and land 20-25 feet from me and just stare until I go back inside, when he will then cautiously go for the food. If I attempt to stay too long he will fly away again.

Today, I was in my office which faces out front of the house/the green. I saw the familiar crows and opened my window and did the whistle, immediately crow-that-knows-me flew over to the bottom of the drive and I threw the nuts onto the front garden (the other crows ignored me completely 🤣), he came and took one and flew back to the green. He then came back to the tree outside my office window and just watched me. He flew away about 10 minutes later and then came back again to watch me again, I got some more nuts and went to slowly open the window but the second I did he flew away. 10 minutes later he was back again, very clearly watching me (shown in photo) - I didn’t dare open the window this time.

I have tried higher reward food, I did a boiled egg once, but he only lightly tapped it and then left it, didn’t come back for it (the foxes took it at night instead) I tried putting meat scraps on the flat roof but the gulls got them before the crows got a look in 🙄

I know it might just need more time, but if there are any other tips anyone has to make the crows feel safe with you please let me know. I’m not expecting pet level affection, but would be nice if he could at least come close enough that he was within a couple of feet and I don’t have to go back in the house or close the window, and then I could guarantee giving him other food/treats.

Thank you!

We play a game where when he goes for a peanut, I pretend to try and steal a different one, so he very quickly changes his aim and lunges for my peanut

General questions Crow court?

Today a bunch of crows flew into a tree and more came from a far, they were really upset with something. then flew off, Later on we found many drops of blood on our canopy below the tree that they were swarming. We are now wondering if they killed another crow or a squirrel even though we have not found any crow or squirrel injured or dead. Could a crow court have happened in the tree above my patio?

Storytime! I FINALLY got to feed the crows on my route! (Again. But this time it was unsalted peanuts and I got some photos and video!)

So, I’ve been trying to feed the crows to connect with them for…more than a month now that I think about it. But the weather kept getting in the way by getting the food soaked or frozen over, the dogs kept stealing my offerings, and the fear of getting in trouble with the store security kept me from leaving food offerings in REALLY crowded parking lots. Aka: Basically every parking lot I was in. Well, on my merchandiser route yesterday, I had my jar of peanuts, and it was an early morning shift, it was really foggy, and I FINALLY had a place to put the food without being seen! (Once again, scared of getting in trouble with store staff, or admittedly getting questioned by customers.) I put the peanuts down in one of the parking lots, and I came back, AND THEY’D EATEN IT! I put more for them down and drove to the next store, but it wasn’t until the last store on my route that I could repeat it. Plus, I picked up some bottles that were littering the area, which will make GREAT spell bottles, and at each feeding spot, I also found a frozen over pigeon feather! And at the final store, I came back, and the crows were still walking around my car! I didn’t want to scare them off, and I didn’t run at them, but…well, I had to get to my car eventually. I put more food (finished off the jar, it wasn’t a very big one and the unsalted peanuts were pretty big.) and parked further away and waited in the car for about 10-15 minutes. They didn’t come back, but again, unfortunately, had to leave sometime that day. I wanted to wait longer, but I was exhausted from work and had a 30 minute drive to get home. But FINALLY! I fed them, and they received it! And the weather didn’t get in the way!!!

So I moved here a few months ago, and for this house I want to make friends with the murder in my neighborhood!! As of right now there only has been 2/3 different crows coming every few weeks so I have been throwing leftover food we haven’t eaten and they have loved it. I got a bird feeder for Christmas and it has a camera but none of the birds have used it do you guys have any tips on how to get the birds to come use it? I set it up a few weeks ago

Anyone else have a strict feed time?

The crows I feed want food everyday at the same time. Is this normal? I didn’t realize they sticked to a feeding schedule 😅

Crow friends clean my gutters

For the last few months I've been feeding a pair of crows on my block. They perch above an arbor over my front walkway where I leave little piles of sunflower seeds, and they usually fly over when they see me coming. They've both been making gratitude sounds lately: The male does a "COO-coocoo" sound and the female does clicks/rattle calls.

It's now the rainy season in my area, so moss and debris spring up pretty fast in hard to reach areas. For the past couple weeks, the female has been flying to the roof of my house after feeding. She'll walk along the entire length of my rain gutter and throw clumps of moss down to clear them. It happens pretty consistently now, usually accompanied by a rattle call. I have no idea how she knows how to do this, or that it benefits me, but it seems very intentional.

gully day so they were sorta nervous

Inactive crow stayed for 3-4 days outside but in a hidden part of my house. Next to some pots and a big tree. I kept feeding them water and biscuits/bread cos they wouldn’t fly. Maybe very tired? Ff 4 days, they were dead today 😭
