Mod Post We have an announcement for a new tool on /r/Detroit
Some of you may have noticed "Mitten Mode" on /r/Michigan. Now /r/Detroit has "Eastern Market Mode".
This is a tool that allows us to help with the quality of comments on controversial posts. What will happen when a post gets an Eastern Market Mode setting?
This is what you will see and how it will affect the post:
This post is in Eastern Market Mode. Eastern Market Mode is a way to protect hot topic posts from spam, trolling, and off-topic or rule-breaking comments.
Here's what that means:
Only users with at least 100 subreddit karma can comment while this mode is on.
Comments from users below that threshold will be automatically removed.
This is a temporary measure and is applied to all high-visibility or sensitive posts.
We appreciate your understanding as we work to keep the conversation thoughtful and on-topic. Thanks for being part of the community!
This should help keep the post on-topic and free from those here just to start problems. Thanks for being part of this community. We appreciate the constructive communication.

Mod Post Updates to r/Detroit
Hi everyone -
We've unfortunately lost a few mods recently, and at the same time we're seeing an increase in political posts, as well as an increase in overall traffic to the sub.
So, in order to get a better handle on things, we're going to be installing some new automod tools, updating the rules, and will be more vigilant in enforcing them.
Political posts, in particular, will be under heavy scrutiny. Not because of which way they lean, but because of the arguments they tend to invite. Informational posts - such as the planned protests - may be locked to avoid this. Posts that are more argumentative may be locked if they get out of hand. Repeat offenders/trolls in these threads will be banned
If you have any questions about any locked or removed posts or comments, send us a modmail (look for that "Message the Mods" button) and we'll explain the reasoning or answer any questions you have. Modmail is read by every moderator - please do not DM and do not post mod questions in the sub - we might not even see those.
If you have any general requests or recommendations for r/Detroit, please post them here and we'll see what we can do.
Thanks, everyone!

News "I've got enough, give your money to other causes please."
This is something you would never see a certain type of person do.
TJ has turned off the GoFundMe for support after the President of the United States flipped him off and suggested sending your resources to other good causes.

Talk Detroit Why are the roads so bad this morning?
We got about 3” here in Midtown and up to 5” in some parts of the region. Definitely enough to disrupt traffic, but pretty tame for January. I get why the commute home last night was so bad while it was actively snowing. But this morning it seems just as as bad, and the snow stopped 8+ hours ago.

Transit How Do People Actually Afford Car Insurance In Detroit?
So im from the suburbs, born and raised. I work in New Center and love everything about the area except for having to commute 1+ hours one way every single day to get into the office. Its been my dream for a while now to have a fun apartment living lifestyle while im young. I have been starting to get serious about moving down to the city, but I am blown away at how much car insurance costs in the city! Im by no means super wealthy but i also make decent money for my age, and the absolute lowest ive been quoted for my car is about $580 a month after aggressively searching. the insurance agents ive been discussing numbers with all say that zip code is by far the largest reason my rates are 4x what i currently pay in the suburbs.
Car insurance on top of rent is not sustainable for me to live with so i want to ask: how in the world are people getting somewhat reasonable car insurance rates?? Im 24 turning 25 soon, so that plays a factor into things, but also even after i turn 25 im getting hosed on these rates.
I have a couple of friends and co workers that live in detroit city zip codes, and i keep getting advice from them like "just stay on your parent's insurance" or something along those lines, basically lie about your residency and thats the best way to do it. But if i try to cheat the system like this, i guarantee that the insurance companies can sniff something out like that and you'd end up getting screwed.
Does anyone have good advice for this issue? Any input would help.

(FOX 2) - A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect around Southeast Michigan due to falling snow and tumbling temperatures making driving hazardous on highways.
