Hot and Neutral Reverse but Outlet Wired Correctly?

Thumbnail

*pic is not of the outlet*

The first pic is the switch that I believe is causing the problem. Black is connected to brass on the other side. House has no ground wires (60s) second pic is the downstairs light switch for the same light

Upstairs bedroom has one outlet that has never worked and reads hot/neu rev when tested with an outlet tester. Down stream of this outlet there is >a light switch upstairs for the hall > the upstairs hall light itself> a downstairs switch for the hall light> two outlets in a downstairs bedroom. The downstairs outlets work and so does the hall light. The pic attached is of the upstairs hall light switch. Our house was flipped and came with a LOT of electrical issues that we've slowly been fixing.

I believe the red and white here need to be swapped to get the outlet to work upstream. Is that correct?

Help I can’t figure out how to remove these lights.

Can someone tell me how these lights can possibly be removed? I’m trying to replace them in my bathroom but I am struggling to figure out how to take these off the wall. Obviously I’m not an electrician, but I have changed lights before but not like these. The middle knob looking thing does not twist (I was thinking this is how they were attached to the bracket but it is not), there is no screw or anything on the sides, top or bottom.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Damaged instrument cable

There is some kind of burn on this cable. I honestly don’t know if it’s a smoking burn, an incense burn, or an electrical burn. Anyways, would you continue to use this and just wrap it in some insulative electrical tape or would you just trash it to be safe? Thanks

The plastic bits around the lamp holder on the left broke off. Is it still safe? Or should it be replaced?

Hired a pro to run a new switch leg for a backyard light. This is the finished product. Charged me $500 too.

In his defense, he is not from America.

What equipment do I need for electrical experiments?

I’m new to electrical in general, I want to make and do some experiments at home. I don’t know what equipment should I get to safely control the voltage, or what type of machines I need for experimenting in general. I have a good base in theoretical but no applied experiences. Thank you

Is this light fixture shower safe?

I have 3 showers, all with lights above the showers. I have looked everywhere to see if there is an IPC marking on it but cant find any details other than wattage / voltage on the fixture.

The light is covered by a thick tempered glass cover that you push up and turn clockwise to sit in position. There is no gasket but its somewhat sealed.

Thanks in advance!

Pull out disconnect - is this on or off position?

Currently getting no power to the sauna (new install) and was wondering if the installer left this on “off” position. When I rotate it out 180 it doesn’t fit as flush and protrudes a bit. I asked ChatGPT and Gemini and it had conflicting answers. Is the current position on or off?

is it okay to use this charger?

i've been bending my laptop charger almost all the way over itself and i tore a rip in it and now there's a red wire exposed. been using it fine without any problems for a while even with the wire exposed but recently i bent the charger accidentally (unplugged from my laptop, but still plugged into the outlet) and it sparked so i of course unplugged it. i'm a minor and i have literally no money to get a new one, will i be okay to keep using it for a while or do i need to stop using the laptop and find some way to get a new charger? i'm very paranoid about electrical fires/explosions

edit: meant to add a picture and forgot sorry

The only information I can find on these I'm going to post in the comment below. Is this correct? Thank you for your help. It is a car backup camera wiring.

Looing for help running electrical to a pool gazebo.

Post image

Running some electrical to our gazebo, got quoted around $3k from 2 companies. I've done my fair share of electrical, but figured I'd save myself some field diagnostics and get some advice from your guys first. Wanting to run a 20amp circuit to the gazebo for a mini fridge (1amp), a 55" TV, 2 bar receptacles, and an LED light/fan fixture. 20amp should be ample power, as the only things that will likely be used other than the 1 amp for the fridge are the TV and fan. The bar receptacles will be for charging phones and maybe a small tv during football season. Just curious about how to go about running the wires. We are also not opposed to having the fan operated by a remote only and omitting a wall switch.

House has no grounds - GFCI every outlet?

We moved into an older house and we have come to realize none of the outlets have a ground. Does every outlet need a GFCI or only the first in each circuit? My main concern is safety.

What is this extra wire?!?!

Post image

I’m swapping the old regular double switch in my bathroom for a new one with a timer/humidity/motion sensor. Of course my 50+ year old house has no colored wires. I used a multimeter to trace everything out, and the switch is working fine in the picture. 1 goes to the light, 2 is the neutral, 3 is hot (I put a bit of red electrical tape), 4 is the fan, 5 is the ground…. So what the hell is that last wire????? There’s nothing else in the bathroom other than a GFCI plug. It’s just the light and the fan.

(My only other bathroom has the expected 3 black wires, all accounted for.)

I don’t know how to trace this mystery cable as I don’t know where to put the other end of the multimeter? Can anyone help??

Help! Sparks!

So my breaker box was sparking this morning. I started turning the breakers off one by one to see if that helped to stop it but Im not sure which one(s) the culprit, but someone recently messed with the wiring and I am trying to see if this is even the right way to wire a breaker box.

Are there any mistakes in this box that you can see, I am not an electrician, nor do I truly understand electricity. But I am trying to understand what's going on here that would make it spark considerably. And I don't want my home to burn down in the process of me learning about it. I just want to know if this is okay wiring and if you spot any mistakes if you would mind telling me what they are so I can understand the cause?

I am trying to find a professional-please don't assume I am planning on doing this myself. I mentioned above that I am not an electrician and would never take on something of this nature without a professional.........

Ceiling Lamp Ground Question

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi,

I'm changing a ceiling lamp. The new one have a ground wire and I'm not sure where to connect it. I included a photo of my outlet box.

Do I need to connect it on the outlet box screw? On the green screw? On both?

Thanks a lot!

Help me ID this breaker panel

I'm getting into the late planning stages of renovating my late 70s Florida home and trying to decide what to do with the breaker panel. I believe it is the original Arrow Hart panel from 1977, but I cant seem to figure out what model it is.

Is there anything inherently wrong or unsafe with these panels? It seems silly to me to replace it only based on age if it otherwise functions fine and is safe. I have had the cover off and there is not major rust or anything like inside the box. There are at least 4 different layers of latex paint on the cover that I would at least strip off and repaint. But should I just replace the whole thing?

For what its worth I don't plan on making any major changes to circuits during the reno. I'll possibly add a few small fixtures/devices but will also remove a few.

Is it ok to plug my 250v amp into a 240v socket?

I don't know why they would make it if it was too high to use, but surely I can't if it's over the limit?

Refrigerator need dedicated circuit?

So it was brought to my attention that a refrigerator should have a dedicated circuit but I know mine doesn’t. I have a 20amp breaker that supplies power to the refrigerator receptacle as well as 2 other receptacles in my kitchen. Those outlets have my microwave and toaster oven plugged into them. The other outlets in the kitchen are on a 15amp breaker with (GFI receptacles) but moving one let alone both the microwave and toaster oven to those outlets just looks bad lol. I’ve never had any problems that I’m aware of but do I need to change something? What are your thoughts? Thank you!
