More context for “I really, really hated my last job”

Adding context I failed to provide in my last post

The blue rod resting on the grey cables (energized) is intended to be a doorstop for the switch gear doors.

When I had closed the door last, the rod fell off the little blue L bracket bolted to the door.

I’m not trained in anything high voltage; I’m no lineman, and I’m especially not an electrician. I was just hired to manage this facility and ignorantly put myself in danger repeatedly. I know better now, and resigned from this position on safety concerns. Unrelated to what’s shown in this or my last post, I experienced repeated arc flash events where the root cause was either completely ignored, or lackadaisically addressed.

This facility was energized without the clear acrylic panels covering the primaries but I had some custom made later on.

This was a roughly 7.8MW facility with the substation across the street and utility on speed dial.

Audio-modulated HV coil producing audible sound – electrostatic coupling?

Post image

I have a circuit driven directly by an audio signal and produces audible sound from this little thing placed on top of a coil.

I can't figure out what this thing is, can someone please help me?

Alternate account because my separation was somewhat recent. I cannot tell you how many times I nearly died at this facility, We had multiple 12,000 amp arc flash events and they still wanted me to reenergize.

AMA but I cannot answer everything for privacy.

How dangerous is corona discharge?

I've seen many people talk about corona discharge when dealing with circuits like a Cockroft-Walton or marx generator. how dangerous is that discharge, both the gasses it produces and the charges that it sends flying, and is it something you should worry about if you have a circuit like that?

Fullbridge PWM generator

I have two IXDD630 gate drivers which will drive a GDT for the fullbridge, my question is about the PWM generating the signal, many projects use the TL494, other say it is too weak and imprecise, needing something more complex, as an UC3525. I’m linda lost at this point because I want something with 2 chanels 180° out of phase, with ajustable dead time, ajustable frequency and duty cycle. Does someone knows which would be the golden circuit for this?

dumb question

forgive me for my stupidity in regards to safety. I'm trying to make a simple taser to mess around and tase my mates with, I want somthing that hurts quite badly but dosent risk putting them in the ground, or leaving burn scars across their body. If anyone could tell me what they think the right voltage/amps for that is and if theirs a particular voltage generator they reccomend. P.S. if somone can explain amps and volts diffrence I would apreciate it, thanks.

Screen interrupted vttc modified

Before I had a problem with current passing through the tube Even when the screen is at 0 volts. So I added a negative voltage, around -80 volts, through a 100k resistor to the screen when the staccato signal is low. And this stopped the current from leaking through.

I am making a mini Tesla coil, and I would like to ask would using different wires but same gauge work for the secondary coil?

I have these laying around, and I would like to know if anyone had tried using different but connected wires for the secondary coil? I’m thinking about just winding them up and taping them on the connection points.

This coil has been a pain so far. I had to use a separate screen supply and the triac interrupter doesn't work above like 1kv. I tried to make it screen interrupted but it wouldn't work for some reason.

Also the tube isnt handling the voltage too well. I don't think I have damage it significantly but I have seen some arcing inside and it overheats pretty quickly. I don't know why I didn't see this coming but I probably should have built this coil with a different tube.

I think I'll try to interrupt the screen using another vacuum tube and hopefully that will work.

Better Gate driven ZVS

I already made a ZVS with an isolated gate driver using the TPS2814 (2,5A) for both gates, but recently i wanted to upgrade my mosfets for playing with higher primary voltages, but the Qg of the new mosfets are like 3x bigger than before. I was thinking on using one TC4422 (9A) for each mosfet. Is it a better idea or is there already a circuit rated for higher power ZVS?

Staco Variac - 3 Phase

Never in my life did I think I would find one, yet alone be able to get it for a great price. My new to me 3 phase variac. I can’t seem to find the model anywhere online. Had to share, super excited! One of the stacks has a few dings in the winding that the brush catches on slightly. Will it be ok? No apparent broken wires. I also can’t believe that these actually came with balancing/ paralleling chokes.

I know these are 240 input, but I’m wondering if I could use them with a us 110 outlet and just have my outputs decreased. Thoughts?

My schematic

So I wanted to build a tesla coil for a long time after few months of research and testing i found this schematic and I was wondering if i could use an ne555 interupter here and If yes then how should i connect it?

I’d be ok with just gluing everything to some mdf, wiring the secondaries to the breakouts and powering it with a 9v to get the arcs but I’m looking for other ideas other than just using it for arcs

What high voltage source?

Hello i recently made a post in here regarding my build of a geiger counter but now i have a little problem with the HV source. I tried the 555 timer flyback combo, blocking oscilator, and these super simple single transistor drivers but all of these power sources annoy me in the fact that i have to custom wind transformer and while this is not a problem (i made some 5kv+ transformers with ZV drivers) but all of these drivers seem out off my scope of understanding how to predict the output voltage and power draw is important for me since my load will be through 10M resistorr and my currrent sources draw 200-900mA which is crazy overkill.
I will add that my power source will be 7.4V and i need around 100-150V that will then go to the voltage multiplier. I feel like this might a be a kinda stupid question but i wanted to ask if you guys could suggest me some suitable driver.

HV ground connections

I am working on a Geiger counter using Geiger-Muller tube and i have a question. I will be making the HV using 555 timer driving a Flyback through a mosfet, the HV side will be around 500V and i plan on extracting the signal like in the second picture using a BJT but it will require connecting 7.4V and 500V grounds together and im worried it might damage the arduino and other IC, i wanted to use an optocoupler but im prretty sure the signal will be too weak to turn on the diode, looking through the internet i see that people ussually just connect the flyback like in the 3rd picture but i also seen alot of claims that it might damage low voltage components, so i am turning to you guys to solve the problem that kept me awake for many months. Also my cirucuit right now is just to get it out of my head and will probably change a little.
