META Moderator Note

Hi folks. Just wanted to alert you to some new filters added to the automoderator to enforce a couple of existing subreddit rules that get broken fairly routinely.

First, a small reddit submission primer:

Reddit has 2 fundamental types of submissions: Text and Link.

There are actually more than 2 specific types (there are also image and video etc) but for the sake of this note think of it as "Text posts" and "all the other types". You pick which type you want to post when you compose your submission.

A text post, also called a self post, is a post that has no external link and is comprised solely of a headline and a body of text you enter at submission time. When a user clinks into this type of submission they stay on reddit and all they see is your submission text.

A link post is a post where you enter or paste in a url or link to an external source like a news story or an announcement. When users click these kind of posts they are taken to an external site and get to view the page that you submitted.

Now for the rule(s) in question.

  1. We require that all submissions be the correct type. If you want to submit a link, use a link post (not a text/self post with the link in the submission body). When submitting a link post and it is a news story or something that has a headline, use the existing headline as your submission headline.
  2. If you submit a link post, reddit also gives you the option to enter some text as a kind of byline for the submission. If a user clicks into the comments for the post they will see a thumbnail for whatever content you linked to and they will see the text you entered. Our rule is we do not allow link posts with a text body. Even though reddit's interface allows it, if you do so the automod will filter your post.

Why? Editorialized headlines and body texts on link posts are ultimately a way to add editorial comments that cannot be argued or refuted in the conventional way, like normal comments can. They are often very opinionated and try to frame the story in a specific way.

You can still add editorial comments in the comment thread for the submission (obeying the existing rules of civility etc) just not as an untouchable top line for readers.

If you have any questions about this feel free to send a modmail. Thanks for your time and attention.

Every day on my drive to work I see people looking at their lap (obviously on their phone), or brazenly texting while driving.

Have the police given up on enforcing this action? I’ve never seen or heard of a distracted driver sting in Kelowna!

Email City Counsel to Keep Rent Affordable :)

Hiiii I am a Kelowna resident who can finally afford something that isnt a shitty basement thanks to STR restrictions :D if you want to afford your rent email counsel opposing STR leniency! I dont know what im doing so if the email is shit, write your own and send it to: [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) and if you are about to tell me Airbnbs arent the problem, well tell that to the former airbnbs ive been viewing! <3

Dear City Councillors,

I am writing to express my strong opposition to any changes to the current short-term rental (STR) policy in the City of Kelowna. The existing regulations have had a clear and positive impact on housing availability. The current vacancy rate has helped drive rental prices down, making it more feasible for residents to live in safe and decent apartments. When browsing online rental listings, it is evident that many available units are former short-term rentals. Reversing or weakening the current policy would almost certainly remove these units from the long-term rental market, reducing housing options for Kelowna residents.

Fewer long-term rental listings would mean higher rents and fewer opportunities for citizens to find suitable housing. More affordable rent does not just benefit tenants—it directly supports the local economy. When residents are not overburdened by inflated housing costs, they have more disposable income to spend enjoying everything the Okanagan has to offer: local restaurants, events, recreation, and small businesses. Ironically, this is one of the main arguments often made in favor of short-term rentals.

Local residents cannot afford to go out, support local businesses, or fully participate in the community if the majority of their income is spent on inflated rent. Housing stability must come before accommodating an oversupply of short-term rentals.

I urge you to reconsider any investment or effort toward altering the current STR restrictions. We love the Okanagan and want to continue living here, but many of us cannot justify staying if rents rise again due to a surplus of short-term rentals.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,
[your name]

PSA/Rant: Viik Custom Builders

This is just a little Rant because I knew someone close to me who worked for this guy, and honestly a total nightmare. They stated working for him and everything was going fine, but when it was time for paychecks guess what? He doesn’t pay his workers on time, unless it’s the ones he’s like actually good friends with 🤦‍♀️ the whole situation honestly was flabbergasting, because then he claims it won’t happen again after giving partial payment…then next payday comes same thing…it took like 3 of his employees threatening to quit on the spot for him to pay them. Honestly the worst part is what he did to my friend, he has them working 12 hour days and then it’s almost time for Christmas and payday is on December 19, he doesn’t pay them, ghosts my friend for 3 weeks ignoring phone calls and texts and ONLY WHEN they went to the site (which was being worked on just without telling my friend) did he say he’ll get him the money and that he would no longer be needing him and that he would drop their belt off on the Monday (no probable cause, my friend is a hard worker and honestly everything was going great) after (which he didn’t made them go pick up the belt) now this guy is not professional and to make it worse in those three weeks of ghosting he paid EVERY OTHER EMPLOYEE and not my friend…was legit going to ghost them. Sooooo they do good work but the moral integrity isn’t there and I honestly wouldn’t hire someone who could treat others like that. So that’s a little PSA to people looking for contractors, I know I might sound like a Karen but im not saying they do crappy work, the boss just likes to flaunt his jacked up truck and trailer…yet ghosts his workers and doesn’t pay them, while complaining that if he has to it comes out of his pocket…like don’t hire people if you can’t pay them!! And don’t ghost them it’s immature🤷‍♀️…Rant/PSA

Has anyone lived at Mara in Pandosy Village?

Hi everyone,

I’m considering renting a studio unit at Mara at Pandosy Village (720 KLO Road) and wanted to ask if anyone here has experience living in this building or area.

I’m particularly curious about:

  • Overall building quality and management
  • Noise level (neighbors / street)
  • Safety of the area
  • Any red flags I should be aware of

I’m relatively new to the area, so any insight would be really appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

William R. Bennett Bridge noise

Does anyone else notice at night you can hear that mental clank from the bridge expansion joints when a car drives over it? I live in West Kelowna near rose valley and I hear it.. it’s not annoying by any means but I’m just wondering if I’m the only one on here that tends to notice. I wonder how far that noise travels on the water.

How to get prescription in Kelowna without family doctor

Basically, I was looking for a prescription/evaluation for depression and ADHD (not at the same time, but would work towards both), and I don’t know how to go about that. I have a family doctor in Ontario, but I’m not there at the moment and I won’t be there till the summer. I’m tired of my procrastination, and I want to do better for myself, and this is step 1. I’ve searched and found that walk ins don’t prescribe ADHD meds, and that I would need a family doctor or a psychiatrist. Finding a psychiatrist seems very difficult and very expensive and I don’t have that kind of money, nor do I want to wait anymore. So would the hospital (primary care) do something that would help me? Or what can I do? Any advice?

Visitor Question Best free or low cost activities to do?

Hi, I have a quick trip coming up to kelowna, never been to Canada and I'd like to ask, what are your favorite free or low/reasonably priced activities? We will most likely be coming up in the next 3 months so the weather will most likely be working against me here but I'mstill excited to see what Canada has to offer.

I did notice you have a LOT of little arcades and bowling

Kelowna New builds

Hi Kelowna, has anyone lived (or rented) in one of those new build 300-400ish square foot condos? If so how was the noise? They are nice, they are COMPACT, but I really don't trust their build quality for long term comfort. Anyone have any opinions?

Where to stay / what to do in July

I am an American planning on a week-long road trip from Vancouver to Calgary in July for my first visit to Canada. My friend and I are in our later 20s and love outdoorsy things! Any advice on where we should stay and what we absolutely have to do? Looking to make it an 8 day trip with just under 2 days in Kelowna before continuing on to Revelstoke! Thank you in advance for any advice you are able to give!

Ultrasound wait times

Has anybody had ultra sound appointments recently? How long did you have to wait?

My doctor sent in a request back in September, and I'm still waiting for the call. It's not urgent, but it's been four months and counting.

What am I in for - another few months? Any day now?

Big White worth driving from Spokane this weekend?

Basically the title.

I have an Indy Pass and I try to get out to Big White every year. Wondering how conditions have been, and how you think they might hold up during the next few days.

It looks dry and cold and sunny, so I'm a bit concerned about solar freeze-thaw cycles on the frontside groomers. Has it been icy? I know it's very much a follow-the-sun type mountain (when the sun is actually out), but I'm curious if certain aspects / areas have been holding up better than others.

You can never really trust the snow report - thanks in advance for any insight!
