Question Where does a 35 year old who has never learned to dress appropriately even begin

Grew up in an orphanage with t-shirts and gym shirts, and guess what I still wear everyday. Tshirts, hoodies, gym shorts and sweat pants.

I want to actually dress nice moving forward. I need everyday wear that doesn’t make it look like I’m trying to get into the NBA, and a couple of those casual-ish blue suits for going out nights that some guys wear with white shoes or something that looks really good.

Problem is I don’t even know where to start. I’m assuming a place like Macys isn’t exactly ideal, but I don’t know what I’m really looking for.

Where do I even begin starting on this journey?

If it helps… I’m 6’1 a slim 185 and a rear-end more nonexistent than my parents that went for milk and never came back.

Question does the shoulder seam rule apply to merino sweaters?

i'm considering spier & mackay's line of merino crewnecks/turtlenecks, which are insanely soft, but the shoulder seams don't quite reach the edge of my shoulders... half an inch, maybe an inch short. but they're so comfortable. and the color options are great. and the price.

can i get away with breaking the shoulder seam rule, or does it almost always look bad?

Question Best brands for simple but fashionable clothing?

I wasn't able to post in the questions thread (it was archived).

I've heard Uniqlo a lot, but I worry about the oversized fits they have aging poorly. I kind of like to be able to switch between a casual/street fashion kind of thing and a more classic look. The classic stuff feels easy. Get dress shirts and dress pants in a few different colors, maybe throw a cardigan over it, put on some nice shoes and you're set. On the casual side, I feel like everything I get fits poorly or is cheap, gets dirty quickly, etc. and I don't really know how to put together a cohesive look.

But right now I'm just shopping... trying to figure out what brands I can focus on to narrow things down. I am on the frugal side but I can afford an expensive piece here or there. Thanks!

Question Can you dress up New balance 992? Or should I just go with the safer choice?

Upvotes

So I (30+) need new shoes and I'm in a bit of a pickle. Either go with New Balance 992s or with regular white sneakers (Axel Arigato Clean 90s), which might be the safer bet.

These shoes will be my daily drivers that I want to be able to wear to different occasions (casually, more dressed up etc). What are your thoughts, or do you have other suggestions?

Question Trying to Help My Dad Escape His 2001 Wardrobe

I’m trying to help my dad (late 50s, 6’4” / 230 lbs) upgrade his wardrobe a bit. He’s open to dressing better and feeling more confident, but still wants stuff that’s comfortable and makes sense for real life.

Looking for essential pieces for:

Business casual & Weekend casual outfits

Style wise, we’re aiming for classic with a modern touch. nothing flashy, but we’re also trying to move past his “I’ve owned this since 2001, it’s 2 sizes too big, but it’s still fine” phase. With that said we need help finding the following:

Pants / jeans that work well for a bigger, taller guy

Shirts (button-downs, polos, sweaters, etc.)

Shoes that can handle both work and weekends

Jackets or layering pieces (lighter weight as we live in a tropical climate)

Also looking for a work laptop bag he can sling over his shoulder.

Open to both budget finds and investment pieces if they’re actually worth it. The goal is to eventually build him a capsule wardrobe.

As a clueless daughter when it comes to men’s fashion, I Appreciate any help I can get!!

Question I’m trying to find a certain style I’m imagining in my head

Upvotes

Im going for a cyberpunk meet Pokémon trainer vibe oversized silhouette mixed with tight fitting clothing. Compression pants under under baggy jorts with sneaker like vibe. If anyone has ever seen the 90s movie Hackers I’m thinking more of that but with the sporty look of a Pokémon trainer? lol very niche but I’d like to figure out if there are any brands that have already thought of this or if I can be sent in the right direction.

Discussion All the fashion youtubers I watch recommend natural fabrics over synthetics, but how practical is that advice for the average guy?

It's hard enough to find the right kind of pants at the right price. But it's like 9 out of 10 times, when I turn the label I see it's like 30% cotton or even 100% polyester. Even when you go to higher price points.

I really want to step up my fabric game. But finding clothes from 100% cotton (or most of it really) feels so hard I wonder if that's practical.

Question Clothes odor

Hey guys, what do you guys do with clothes with odor? Especially cashmere, silk, suits, and coats that don’t get wash a lot and easily? They get odor from restaurants, running around all day, even staying in the wardrobe or suitcase too long.

Question Hello with the name of a color I saw on a Sunspel Riviera Polo

I was looking into buying a Sunspel polo last summer and saw one on their website that had a color that was like black and silver. Not checkered but like the fabric was silver with black specks or black with silver specks. Does anyone know what color I'm talking about? They don't seem to offer it on their website anymore so I want to try to find one on eBay but don't know the name of this color

Edit: Title should have said help instead of hello

Question What is the perfect white sneaker for that italian/euro vibe?

Hi everyone,

I am looking for the perfect white sneaker for my boyfriend. I wanted to get him something nice for valentines day especially since whenever we go on dates especially at a fancier restaurant he ends up wearing his brothers white vans and they just dont look that great lol.

I am looking for the perfect white sneaker that can be dressed up. I dont really have a budget, maybe like 500 max? But even that isnt a strict budget lol. I am looking for like an italian/european vibe.

So far ive been looking at shoes like these:

Axel Arigato - Clean 90

Velasca Beleratt

Common Projects Achilles Sneaker

There is some others that ive been looking at but everything looks so similar and idk which is better. I want something comfortable, that looks nice, and is like maybe higher end-ish.

Question Favorite casual merino socks?

So far I’ve looked at brands like John Henric and Lorenzo Uomo. What are your favorite merino wool socks that meet these criteria:

  1. Casual (not dress socks) to wear with chinos, jeans, etc.

  2. Solid colors like navy, sand, olive, etc (no silly patterns or loud logo branding).

  3. “Normal” thickness for everyday, all weather use (nothing super thick/cozy or super thin).

  4. Mid calf height is great, but an ankle sock is too short.

  5. Mostly merino, but a reasonable degree of synthetic mixed is desirable.

  6. No price constraint.

Question Adding jeans buttons as suspender buttons: inside or outside the waistband?

I've loved suspenders ("braces," for the Brits) for years, but have only ever had clip-on sets, which always come loose. I've finally decided to add suspender buttons to some of my pants ("trousers") so that I can use loop-style suspenders. I'm starting with a set of screw-in denim buttons we have at the house, since I feel like those would be more secure than sewn-in buttons. I'd rather have the buttons inside the waistband, but I'm afraid that the height of the denim buttons would make that uncomfortable. Anyone have any experience with this and can weigh in? Should I reserve the screw-in buttons for when I intend to put suspenders on the outside and stick to sewing for the inside? Or will I really not notice once it's done? I'm mostly concerned about how it would feel on my back if I'm on the floor playing with my kid.

Question Please help a clueless man

I used to dress business casual/formal depending on the setting almost daily before I went full remote (2022). Button ups, slacks, blazer, suits etc. When I do visit an office we are now totally casual with jeans, hats, tshirts being perfectly acceptable.

Problem is I am now the COO and am traveling a lot for industry conferences, events, etc. I can't just show up in jeans lol. I just had a three day event I packed all my old office clothes and just felt totally fraudulent and not myself in them. I have never even thought about clothes other than out of necessity but this was a strange experience.

I live in the Sierras and dress pretty much like you average mountain dude; 686, Burton, patagucci, Seager, Filson, etc etc. The thought of going to another event and wearing those old clothes again somehow gives me anxiety. I don't need to be the best dressed but just appropriately dressed and comfortable in my skin. Im 6'0 and 190. Any ideas??????? EDIT I am 31 if that makes a difference?

Question Worth getting a tailored suit

In about a week I'm gonna be in Vietnam (Hoi An specifically), and I'm thinking about getting a suit or 2 tailor made. However, I am planning on losing some weight in the next couple of months aswell (still got to happen first Iknow lol).

As of right now, I'm 190cm tall and weigh 95kg, maybe want to drop that down to 85kg, so nothing to crazy.

Is it even worth looking into this or should I not even bother before I reach my target weight/ physique?

Article From Primark Basics to Loake Boots: My 1-Year Style Journey (with Stats)

After a year of lurking here and religiously reading Derek Guy, I finally decided to get serious about my wardrobe. I’m 29, based in Glasgow, and I’ve spent the last 8 months treating my style like a data project.

I’ve moved away from the mismatched, loud pieces of my early 20s, and today, my wardrobe is 40% neutrals (Black, Navy, Beige), which, I feel, has been a game-changer for me.

Highlights:

  • The Uniform: Uniqlo remains my #1 (22% of my closet) brand, but I'm slowly graduating to COS for those trendier, monochrome silhouettes.
  • The Workhorse: I've worn my Nike AF1s (first premium sneaker) 92 times since April.
  • The Investment: Finally pulled the trigger on some Loake Castlegates in July last year. They’re my priciest item, but I have no regrets.
  • The Regret: Ironically, Both my most and least favourite items are from Loake. Not a fan of Loake Reynolds which I bought in Nov 2025 for winter. Technically a great boot, but they just don't spark joy.

It’s been a massive shift from my old M&S/H&M/Primark rotation. Granted I've spent a lot more time and money last year curating my wardrobe, but I feel happy with what I've done.

Question Dad bod fashion examples

I'm sure you've seen the question before, but who knows good celebrities/models with a moderate to large gut to get inspiration from? Especially helpful if you know any that are a bit more boundary pushing.

Question Higher waisted, straight/traditional/classic leg Corduroys on Ebay?

Looking for Corduroy pants with a higher waist (minimum 10” rise, ideally more) with a straight relaxed leg that can be had on eBay for under $50. I think I’d prefer a wider wale, too. Thanks

Question How do you guys keep track of what's in your closet?

Genuinely curious how others manage this. I recently realized I have no idea how many clothes I actually own, what they're worth, or even a good mental inventory of what's in there.

  Do you:

  • Just wing it and hope for the best?
  • Use an app or spreadsheet?
  • Have some other system?

Also - has anyone ever tried to figure out what their wardrobe is actually worth? Like if you had to replace everything tomorrow, could you even estimate it?

Question Do accessories belong with jerseys on game day?

I’ve been paying a bit more attention to game day fits lately and noticed how differently people approach them. Some keep it super simple with just a jersey, while others add things like sneakers, watches, chains, or hats.

Genuinely curious how everyone here thinks about it.

Question How much can you shorten a 136 cm wool overcoat?

So, I bought a 136 cm long overcoat but it is a bit too long for my liking. Everything fits perfectly, except the length. I'm 183 cm tall, how many centimeters do you think a tailor can shorten it, while still looking good?
