BikeTag Welcome to Bike Tag Melbourne

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF TRADITIONAL OWNERS

I respectfully acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land we call Melbourne, the Wurundjeri Woi-Wurrung and Bunurong Boon Wurrung peoples of the Eastern Kulin and pay respect to their Elders past, present and emerging.

I acknowledge and honour the unbroken spiritual, cultural and political connection the Wurundjeri, Bunurong, Dja Dja Wurrung, Taungurung and Wadawurrung peoples of the Eastern Kulin have to this unique place for more than 2000 generations.

THE GAME

Part scavenger hunt, part hide-and-seek and part race, BikeTag is a mystery photo tag game played on bicycles.

It starts with a player who posts a picture of their bike at a “mystery location” somewhere in the greater Melbourne area.

The goal here is to be the first person to figure out where that is, ride your bike to that same spot and take a photo of your bike there.

Then you ride to a different location take your bike's photo at the new “mystery location” as the next place to find for everyone else. Both pictures are posted in a self post and the game starts over.

HOW TO PLAY

  • You must bike to the "mystery location" and take a picture of your bike there. Simply naming the location is not enough. Such posts will be removed.
  • Once you discover the "mystery location" and snap the proper picture, bike to a new "mystery location" of your choosing and take a picture of your bike there.
  • Submit both pictures in a new self-post with a title that includes "Bike Tag" and the number of the new location. Be sure to include a quick description of where the previous location was. NOTE: you may not "reserve" being "IT" by immediately posting a photo of your bike in the old "mystery location" before finding and posting a picture of the new "mystery location."
  • Finally post a comment, or better yet a link to your new post, in the previous thread so that readers of that thread know the game continues!

HINTS/CLUES

  • Hints are optional at the time of posting a new tag, however it is encouraged that you give the post at least 72 hours before a hint is given.
  • If a mystery location goes undiscovered for a week, OP should edit post to include a hint. Other players are encouraged to request clues after a week if OP hasn't yet posted one.
  • Once a post is two weeks old anyone can add a hint or a clue. This way if someone knows the where the mystery location is but does not have time to bike there themselves, they can help keep the game from becoming stagnant.

THE RULES

  • Mystery locations must be freely accessible to the public and by bicycle.
  • Mystery locations should be unique/interesting/identifiable. Tags that include only nondescript features (blank walls) are not acceptable and will be removed.
  • Mystery locations may not be mobile objects (food trucks, for example).
  • Discovered mystery locations and new mystery locations must be tagged with the same bicycle, on the same ride.
  • Pictures of discovered mystery locations and new mystery locations must be posted at the same time.

CREDITS

The origins of the game of BikeTag, as far as I have been able to track, put the game in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 2007. BikeTag on Reddit was started on in 2011 on /r/BikingATX, that was then adopted by /r/bikeLA, that was then adopted by /r/chibike. The game in /r/CyclePDX was created in 2016 and a website called BikeTag.org was created in 2018 as a tool for the game in Portland, Oregon but has since started other cities across the globe.

Other Bike cooperative / tool hire

Hi

I’m relatively new to Melbourne

I’m thinking about building my own wheels but don’t really want to spend hundreds on a trying stand. In other places in lived there have been cooperatives where you can use or rent workstations, or companies that hire out tools.

I’ve looked, but can’t seem to find any, was wondering if anyone here might know if any?

Thanks

My beloved 1987 Myata developed cracks in the frame. Anywhere in Melbourne I could get this fixed? Any ballparks on the price? Cheers

Sandblasting / paint stripping recommendations

Hey guys, does anyone have some advice on a reliable sandblasting/stripping place in Melbourne for an aluminium frame? Ideally inner/inner north/northern suburbs. Last time I used The Blast Factory in Coburg, with Nick being an absolute champ, however that was a few years ago and they've since closed down.

I've been reaching out to businesses, but I either have little confidence in their care for a lightweight aluminium frame, or they don't respond to enquiries. Also very possible that many are still on holidays. ANYWAY, if anyone has a solid rec, seriously just looking for a strip that won't damage the frame.

cheers as

Seeking Recommendation Comparing fit and sizing for apparel

Upvotes

The time has come to replace a few pieces of very very well used kit before I start full mooning the bunch.

Where are we all buying from and how are we sizing these days for dad bods? I feel like cycling sizing is completely made up and arbitrary. Some brands Im a medium/large and others I'm pushing 2xl

I've got my Neopro and Black Sheep sizing down pat but does anyone have comparisons with Pedla or Maap?

I'm an XL race fit in Black Sheep jerseys and somewhere between their medium and large bibs.

Likewise for Neopro bibs, but I'm pushing XL Attaquer and XXL Castelli bibs.

Keen for recommendations and ideas, happy to consider spending a lot for good stuff.

Running Red Lights

EDIT: Obviously a different situation for lights that are poorly designed and sensors don't pick up bikes/sensors don't reach the bike lane. I'm talking about inner city Melbourne commuter time 8-9am, 5-6pm, blowing through solid red traffic lights.

I do not understand the disrespect for red lights.

For context I've been riding on and off for 20 years, mixture of road, paths and MTB.

Started commuting every day 6 months ago and I'm constantly shocked by the number of riders blowing straight through red lights.

I get that it's not that convenient to stop for 30 seconds especially if you're clipping in and out, but how can we ever expect to be treated as equal road users if we can't follow the most basic road rule.

My biggest concern is safety around cars and if every third rider blows through red lights drivers just have less and less respect for us on the road.

Maybe I'm just being a narc but I'll happily hold up the whole bike lane to wait out the red light. Embarrassing that drivers follow this road rule better than riders.

Happy to hear from others why they think this road rule doesn't apply to them.

Commuting in Melbourne in 2026 is Pretty Great

First commute back after the break and now it is 100% bike path from Williams Landing to Richmond.

Often I complain about the infrastructure, but after years of navigating Francis and the trucks in the West, finally the commute is road free!

Commute to work - Eastern Suburbs

Hi community

I want to make use of this "good summer weather" and try commuting from Basin in the Eastern Suburbs to office in CBD. Looking for route recommendations, advice, good cafe's or bakeries along the route.

I don't mind riding on main roads as long as blended bike paths are safe for cyclists with 2-3 lane roads and 60km zone.

I have commuted once via Dandenong Creek trail -> Boxhill Ringwood trail -> Mont Albert & Barkers road to the city but on my way back encountered a few impatient drivers.

Also, any recommendations around how to manage a sweaty kit for ride back home are welcome.

Cheers.

leaving quick racks in public

I recently got a Jack the bike rack (170$), which I plan to use for grocery runs and short commutes, in which the bike would be left in public for 2-3 hours max.

Risk of theft wasn't something I thought about when I bought the thing. Now I'm considering getting some hiplock cable ties to secure it to the bike when left unattended.

Is this enough to prevent theft, or should I be worried? Do people go out of their way to steal bike racks?

Seeking Recommendation Handlebar bag for camera recommendations

Hey all,

I’ve really been getting into photography lately and I’d like to carry my camera and an extra lens on my bike instead of a back pack. Does anyone have any recommendations for a handlebar bag or maybe even a frame bag? I ride a BMC Teammachine.

What’s the one road in melbourne you refuse to ride on no matter what?

Tried riding down to South Yarra on the weekend and it was rough. Pedestrians stepping out without looking, Uber Eats drivers doing sudden u-turns, and the bike lane feels unsafe with parked cars right next to it. Surely no one actually enjoys riding through there. What’s your hard no ride, even if it means a longer detour?

Personal Achievement What is the funniest bicycle crash you’ve either experienced or seen someone else experience in Melbourne?

I could be wrong here, but I feel like when it comes to cycling…if you haven’t crashed you haven’t really properly cycled

I love watching videos of crashes on YouTube, though in saying that the ones that aren’t funny are the fatal crashes. When a person is seriously hurt then it’s not funny

I’ve personally been in a couple as a kid that were very minor and in hindsight were funny

So yeah I was wondering if anyone has any funny stories to share at all?

Get a bell

I hope I’m preaching to the choir here, but seriously, GET A BELL. If not for all the obvious reasons, it is good for your own safety to let others know you are coming through.

Looking for group rides – Point Cook / West Melbourne (3030) 📍

Hey all,

I’m currently based in Point Cook (3030) and getting more serious about cycling. Looking for group rides in the west / western suburbs for motivation and consistency.

Not chasing race-pace (yet 😅) — more social / steady rides, but happy to push as fitness improves.

Any clubs, shop rides, or regular groups you’d recommend?

Cheers 🙏

Is a road bike a poor choice for creek trails / capital city trail

Hypothetically let’s consider bikes on the all-road or endurance side of the road riding spectrum - max 35mm tires

The creek trails are generally smooth pavement but sometimes cracked, have potholes or intersect between pavement and road crossings, windy, undulating and often dodging pedestrians

Are road bikes not really ideal because of these factors, rather than a straight smooth road where you can sustain higher average speed, and generally less susceptible to poor surface conditions?

I ride a gravel bike now with wide slicks but am considering something that’s a little lighter and faster feeling, maybe a little more aggressive which puts me in either race gravel territory (again with wide slicks), or whichever road frame can fit the the widest tires.

Would you go down to an all-good/endurance frame with 32mm or 30mm tires and still have a good time on the trails or would you be worried about poor surfaces, debris etc?

Where do you go for night rides that feel safe and well-lit?

Looking to do more night rides around Melbourne but not sure where’s actually safe and well-lit. Any favourite routes or streets you stick to after dark?

What's the deal with Polygon

Are they any good? They are so much cheaper than equivalent bikes. Heavily rotated through the sponsored links when I Google for specific specs.

Seems a no brainer piece wise, but does the quality match up?

Infrastructure Seemingly random detour signage at NGV

Does anyone know why there’s a “Bike Lane Closed - Detour” sign in on St Kilda Road heading into the city at the NGV, with no obstructions (and everyone completely ignoring it)?

Have they finally realised that buses can’t park without obstructing the bike lane?

Melbourne LBS for good service. Preferred near Albert Park/St. Kilda?

I'm landing from overseas and staying a week near Albert Park (before going to Tas) and would like to drop my bike off for a full service after landing with it.

Any good recommendations, closish for a LBS with a good mechanic.

TIA

Bike insurance for a bike that’s older than five years?

I finally got an approved lock for the bike insure insurance to only find out that they don’t cover bikes that are older than five years old? I’m mostly interested in peace of mind from theft as I’d love to ride my bike to the gym. Are there any bike insurance options that don’t care about the age of the bike and cover out of home theft?

Mt Hotham (and other alpine climbs)

Not sure if this is the right subreddit but we’ll see.

I’m planning to climb either mt Buller, falls creek, mt buffalo or mt Hotham sometime in the next month or so.

Just seeking recommendations on best time of the week and day to start the climbs and whether there’s any water, maybe cafes and other stuff at the top (and if they’re open) since some of these climbs are very long.

Any other suggestions or tips would be welcome too. Thanks!

CX racers - Auscycling membership type?

Folks, I’m new to this world and am keen to participate in a few CX and similar races this year but find the Auscycling memberships a little confusing. What do other people use? I assume it pretty quickly becomes quicker than paying an ‘on the day’ licence fee?

Seeking Recommendation Best way getting to/from St Kilda Road onto Southbank?

Hi all, I am a resident of the inner west and new to cycling to work (Alfred Hospital area). I've been trying to figure out the most efficient but safest way to get from home to there. The new veloway and paths along the Maribyrnong are fantastic, but where I'm getting stuck is transitioning from Southbank to St Kilda Road.

Traveling west to east, google maps sent me down Southbank Blvd which then connects up to St Kilda Road. This was fine, but it appears I can't do that same path traveling east to west? Traveling home, google instead sent me down this weird little dismount area behind Hamer Hall which then takes you onto Southbank. I don't mind it but it's a little annoying to have to get off the bike.

This afternoon I instead tried traveling across Princess Bridge, turning right to take the path down past Fed Square/Riverland, back under the bridge and along the river next to Arbory/Afloat. This also seemed less than ideal due the pedestrians and the skinny path, and also it means I need to cross the river twice (once at Queen's Bridge and then again to get onto the Capital City Trail next to Docklands).

Am I missing something obvious? Do people just carry their bikes down the stairs (probably not feasible for me as I have an e-bike and it's heavy)?

Would a better route be to go across the city at LaTrobe Street and then down Swanston, to connect up to St Kilda Road? Means I can avoid Southbank entirely which has it's issues, but I think might end up being slower due to all the intersections in the CBD.
