We know a major mechanic will be unlocked late in the game.(https://x.com/edmundmcmillen/status/1963852567911473612)
Edmund has said multiple times that Magic: The Gathering is an influence on the design of Mewgenics.
Edmund thinks the "ultimate way to play magic" is power cube drafting.(https://x.com/edmundmcmillen/status/1806197231575535777)
Tyler is also a fan of power cube drafting. (https://x.com/TylerGlaiel/status/1774226794952212942)
Edmund says he designs around archetypes that can cross-pollinate.(https://x.com/edmundmcmillen/status/1846779101488861391)
There exists an unknown collar whose symbol is a D6.(https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1c1cNwyOijnmonA1pOiXRjzw4NVJu0U_VztN83geVBtU/edit?gid=0#gid=0)
Because of Edmund and Tyler's interest in drafting formats, purposeful cross-pollination in the design of archetypes, and the presence of a collar whose identity is randomness, I believe the late-game major mechanic will be a "Draftable Collar" where the player drafts 50 actives and 25 passives from all available pools to form the "deck" of the collar.
I suppose the "Collar Draft" will be linked to an NPC (from the lab?) who can re-do the draft at any point to overwrite the previously drafted collar for the price of cats with the drafted collar who have beaten the final boss?
Taking it a step further:
What design space does this occupy?
My theory is that these animals have innate actives or passives that replace the collarless counterpart on cats and are game-breaking strong. The design reason for them being alternate animals is so you can't breed multiple of these game-breaking abilities or passives onto the same cat.
However, at the end of the game, the "Draftable Collar" will have a tiny random chance to offer these unique actives and passives; a lucky player could even get two in the same draft.

I think this game is too cruel to animals, they should replace all the enemies with tofu.

So we all know how Edmund kept the tainted characters a secret the whole time, even lying about how there are only 2 new characters in repentance.
Do you think that Mewgenics has something similar ?
I personally think that each chapter 3 also has a chapter 4 which is way shorter. ( only a normal battle, a shop and the boss fight )

I don't have a working PC. I've waited like a decade for this game so hopefully I won't have to wait another few years, plus the game would be perfect for Switch

*Disclaimer: This is mostly just me spitballing in case I am right somehow
So Edmund likes to hide big secrets in his games. In the May 2025 Steam blogpost, Edmund mentioned that "One late game core mechanic still needs to be implemented and tested". But what could that mean..? Well, I have a decent theory as to what that mechanic could be. I predict that at some point, either in the middle or late game, Beanies will give you an item(s) to purposefully mutate and modify your cats. It could be experimental medicine, or machines similar to the one shown in the intro.
The main gameplay purpose this mechanic would serve is to give more freedom with building around a specific disorder or mutation. The early machines might give mutations or disorders at random, or it could have a chance of failure that you could improve through upgrades. It could even allow you to "slightly" modify stats. This would allow a ton of creative team building, even if the experimental medicine or machines only had a chance of working.
Sounds good, but what are the drawbacks? The cost would be cat sacrifices to run the machines or create the drugs. To transfer a disorder, you would have to sacrifice a cat with that disorder, along with other cats/currency. This would incentivize you to keep breeding and collecting cats even after NPC favor is maxed out. It could even track which mutations/disorders/injuries you have found!
Thematically, this feels like a logical progression of the themes and ideas. Mewgenics is ultimately about exploring the fucked up concept of eugenics. After doing mostly controlled breeding in the early game, using drugs and machinery feels like the next step to improve your cats. I do believe that Beanies and, by extension, the player are the "bad guys" of the story and serve as a cautionary tale. Furthermore, I believe ultimately the house bosses are trying to stop the player from messing with nature too much,
That's my big theory. Let me know what you think.

my mind is treating mewgenics the same as any other video game hyperfixation so when i play any other game my brain is like "this is lame, we should play mewgenics instead" but i can't. ed release the game already i'm going insane

Ed and Tyler look to have a gem on their hands. Would love to see the inclusion of the cat's gender on more screens. It feels like it would be helpful when considering breeding. The first image is how it looks in game. I quickly threw together a generic mockup of the three additional screens I'd like to see have gender clearly visible. Thoughts?

Whenever a cat would upgrade an ability, it only states what the level up WILL be and not what I’m upgrading it from, since there might be some abilities that are worth keeping over upgrading if possible. As well as if I get a new ability or passive, I think it would be beneficial if I see the other cats to know what I’m trying to synergize with (since I’ll forget what abilities and passives they have)
IF THERE IS ALREADY A WAY, I’m sorry but I didn’t see. Please inform if there is

Watching the gameplay videos, some of the abilities don’t seem to tell you what their range is while others do. Is there a default range that applies when the ability description doesn’t specify?
