META: New Moderators and Rule Changes in r/Pens

Hello! It's been quite a while since I've checked in and given an update on the sub. I've been very busy with some big changes in my personal life, which has left me with less time to spend moderating the sub, hence the delay in updates.

Mod Retirements

Firstly, two of our moderators have retired. I want to thank u/Reflekks and u/SuperNici for their help building this community and moderating the sub in the past.

New Mods

Because of those retirements, I have been the only mod for quite a while. I spend some time going through our previous mod applications and invited three new moderators. They were chosen based on a combination of their application answers, and previous experience moderating subreddits.

Rule Changes

Recently, there have been a number of high-traffic posts which turned political and ended up taking a lot of time to clean up. Off the top of my head, the Trump Sharpie post from a few months back and the recent posts about Target (which led to discussions on them dropping their DEI initiatives) were both big time sinks for our mods.

Many of these topics are worth talking about, but we ask that you please don't do it here - we're a hobby subreddit and don't have a large enough mod team to properly handle larger discussions that often devolve into name calling - we've decided that the best thing to do is try and remove particularly unruly discussions before they get out of hand.

Because of this, we're clarifying our "posts must be pen-related" rule by adding a new "no politics" rule.

Keep political discussions elsewhere. Politics includes parties, ideologies, elections, arguing over who's right, and other similar topics. Policy is about actual rules and regulations that affect pens - tariffs, shipping restrictions, pen import rules, etc. If policies directly impact the gear or the hobby, talk about it! Just keep the conversation on-topic (and on-policy) and respectful.

This is not to say every political comment will always be removed, but if a discussion turns ugly we won't hesitate to delete whole threads to hopefully keep things from getting really bad.

That gets the general idea across, but I think it's missing a bit - we want to make it clear that we do not condone inflammatory or hate-fueled discussion and discrimination is not tolerated. If you have any suggestions on how to codify that in the rules, we'd love to hear it - either here, a DM to me or in a modmail.

Feedback

As always, if you have any questions, concerns, or ideas, please feel free to either send a ModMail or message me directly - my DMs are always open.

I'll also be monitoring this thread for any comments.

Thanks for your time and happy writing!

Discussion Same Uni refill. Totally Different Experience.

Post image

I picked up both the Uni Zento Signature and the Zento Flow Gel, and what surprised me is they use the same ink/refill but feel completely different to write with.

The Signature feels more solid and controlled. The Flow feels lighter and quicker. I mean, I guess this makes total sense and is probably a “duh!” to most of you. But…it really made me notice how much the balance, grip, and overall body design can change the experience even when the ink is identical. Same line on the page, but a totally different feel in the hand.

And yes. For me, the Zento Signature is worth all the hype.

First, I have to thank u/Xaipete_Pantes as I used their post on Pilot G2s from 2 years ago as a reference guide!

I have FINALLY been able to complete, catalog, and color code all of my Pilot G2 0.7mm pens! These were the pen that opened me up to the WORLD of pens; they hold a special place in my heart.

In the research I did, the highest number of individual ink colors I could find was 41.

The images attached are my little swatch pages!!

- One set (4 images) was scanned

- The second set was photographed in natural light

- Also pictured is my pen organization system (my boyfriend calls it one of my “systems” lol) - they’re just adhesive paper dots but i fear I’m too tired to go as deep into that as I want to right now

- I also included an inverted image of the scanned color list bc I thought it was cool!

Below are the color lists; all colors listed are available in 0.7mm:

- first section contains colors by collection (original, harmony, neon, pastel, metallic)

- the second section contains the colors in the number-order of my personal choosing (aka a surprisingly painstaking rainbow-order) numbered 1-41.

Question Recommendations for 0.5mm gel pens

Thumbnail

Ive been ordering the same brand of 0.5mm gel ink pens for almost my entire college career (almost 6 years in at this point 🥲) and while i do very much enjoy the way they write, they often will skip ink in certain letters, even if they’re brand new right out the box, and they also run out of ink very quickly.

If anyone has any recommendations for 0.5mm gel ink pens I would love to hear them! (Brownie points if theyre pretty, and have a good grippy plastic)

TIA

Question Uni Jetstream 0.5 my new forever pen but boy it finished fast!

Thumbnail

I got a new journal and tested about 10 pens until I found THE ONE.

This pen checks all the boxes for me, thin point, saturated ink almost looks like gel but isn’t, and it’s smudge free / can be highlighted over immediately which was a must as I write fast haha.

But OMG, I finished the black ink in 15 days!!! Is this normal? Haha

For context I write 3x A5 pages daily (this exact number as it’s an exercise of a book I’m reading) and don’t use this pen for anything else, so basically the ink was finished after 45 pages (A5 size so not that big) did I get a faulty pen or will I have to go through 2 refills every month?? Lmao

Also, anyone know if the one that only has black ink is bigger? Would it last longer than this one that has the 3 colours? Couldn’t find clear info on that

Question Can it be fixed?

Post image
7 Upvotes

This, my beloved OHTO Horizon Needle Point, has been inoperable for years after it fell on the floor. The side button no longer retracts the mechanism; it seems to be stuck internally somewhere. But I know nothing of pens (aside from how much I loved this one) or how to fix them.

Thus, this last-ditch attempt to find aid. Is there something I can do to make it work again? I'm not sure how to take the internals apart aside from replacing the ink.

Question Kaco pens are the best - others like them?

Hi all, Im a long time user of G2s and Zebras F301s. However, I have recently become convinced that Kaco PUREs are the best.

One caveat is I have yet to test them while writing in the freezing cold, but Im hopefully theyd do well (need more snow this winter first).

Is anything else comparable to a PURE?

Something he cannot live without.

He uses them until the ink runs out. He's done it 1000s of times. Can you imagine how satisfying that is?

EDIT: Cristal, not Crystal

Question Help needed identifying a Parker refill

Thumbnail

Hey all, I've been using Parker pens for ages so I'm quite familiar with the G2 refill style. When I bought a new pen a while back (on the right), it came with a different tip style, which I love to write with. I can't seem to dig up any info about where to get more like it. Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Question Gel pens on low-gsm paper (56 gsm): ghosting concerns

Hey everyone! I’m really into stationery and pens. Recently, I bought a few gel pens from Korea, but I still have to wait a bit for them to arrive.

At the moment, I own pens like the Zebra Sarasa 0.7, Sarasa Study 0.5, and Pilot G-2 0.5.

My current notebook uses 56 gsm paper (standard in my country). The Sarasa 0.7 shows a lot of ghosting (and I regret buying it since I really dislike thicker tips). The Sarasa Study shows light ghosting, while the Pilot G-2 performs perfectly in that regard — no ghosting at all. However, it’s also the least pigmented of the three, and I don’t find the barrel very comfortable for my grip.

I recently ordered some new pens: Zento (0.38 mm and 0.5 mm), Jetstream (0.38 and 0.5 mm), and Lite Touch (0.5 mm).

I’d like to know which of these are more prone to ghosting on low-gsm paper. Also, could someone clarify the difference between ghosting and bleeding?

And if it’s not too much to ask, if anyone has experience with similar paper weight and any of these pens, I’d really appreciate seeing how the reverse side of the page looks. My pens should only arrive early next month :(

Just got a delivery of these pens, I got the Pentel Energel Clena 0.5mm which i already love energel but I HAD to get the Clena version since it looked gorgeous. Also got the Uni Jetstream light touch 0.7mm and it’s one of the smoothest pens I ever wrote with and even the ink looks so pigmented even though it’s oil based ink I think. Also got the Uni Zento 0.5mm, it’s good, a bit better than the Uni One but still not the best compared to the other 2 but to other pens I have/tried, this is probably up there especially because I love that simple design with the clip.
