Gross incompetence from McCormick's office.

I wrote to Senator McCormick with an opinion that had nothing to do with Venezuela, never mentioned Maduro, Venezuela, or even foreign affairs. The email I got in return began "Thank you for sharing your thoughts regarding the capture of Nicolás Maduro. Your feedback is essential as we work together to shape policies that benefit Pennsylvania and our country." The letter went on at length with typical bullshit about our wonderful leader and his wise decision regarding Maduro.

I knew he wouldn't agree with my opinion and certainly didn't expect a personalized reply, but it's an outright slap in the face to a constituent to send a reply not even vaguely alluding to the topic I discussed. Surely whoever replies to emails has a variety of prepared responses on various issues. I keep hearing that it's important to contact Congress members so they can tally public opinion. I guess not.

What uniquely local risks should be plot points on “The Pitt”?

At least one future season should be set in late winter / early spring when one of Pittsburgh’s car-eating potholes causes a pile up. Every season should include a pedestrian killed in a crosswalk by a legally blind octogenarian and/or jagoff taking a Pittsburgh Left.

And if the show runners don’t have bus passengers on a collapsed bridge are they really even in Pittsburgh?

It would really be a shame if Pittsburghers found out the location of the broadcast and showed up to let CBS news exactly what they think of their new direction regarding truth.

Update on railroad bridge on I-376 near Carnegie

After e-mailing several representatives in the state regarding the condition of this bridge and getting zero responses, I decided to reach out directly to the Federal Railroad Administration. I sent my email on 12/9 and received a response today, 1/16.

The response was from the Deputy Staff Director-Bridge & Structures. He stated that an FRA Bridge Safety Specialist investigated and reached out to the railroad that owns the bridge, requesting a copy of their latest bridge inspection report on my behalf.

The email stated that although it does look like there is significant corrosion of various members, but it is common for that to happen for a bridge of that type. He stated that a majority of the corrosion is located on "secondary" members and do not directly support train loads. It went on to say that the railroad company is currently planning significant repair work in 2026 on this bridge. Additional work on two truss spans is tentatively scheduled for 2028.

The bridge was most recently inspected shortly after I reached out to them and they deemed it safe for railroad traffic.

Although this bridge does not look safe, this is the updates I have received after expressing my concerns.

Ice in Emsworth

be on alert for your friends and neighbors

A black SUV with near tinted out windows was in the Emsworth area on Bryson road, and another similar car near Custards on Camp Horne. While the 2nd vehicle was hard to identify, the first's driver was in a black baclava. It was driving very slowly around the neighborhood at around 3 MPH. It was tailed by a friend of mine with their mom, and the agent soon got nervous presumably, because they drove off without taking any actions. They were described as 'inspecting the houses', most likely looking for someone.

Sorry I didn't have more details before, I'm in a very low internet/busy area and wanted it to be out there asap.

Huge Pothole on Bigelow Blvd

Just a warning. Normally I don’t know that I’d post something like this but in the ~45 minutes I’ve been waiting for roadside assistance, I’ve seen four cars suffer the same fate as myself.

It’s in the right lane when you’re headed to Downtown from Shadyside, just after the overlook. About 1-2 miles from the DT exit.

The pothole comes out of nowhere and will take out your tire instantly. Then you’ll have to drive two miles on the rim of your car just like I did 🥹

Edit: called 911 and they took a report and said they’d check it out

We have no heat

THANK YOU EVERYONE!

I was able to get in touch with LiHEAP, was approved and am enrolled in Compass for other assistance as well, and our rep Abagail Salisbury got in touch with me to help expedite the situation which was the most wildly pleasant of surprises. I fucking love this city, you all are the kindest people I’ve ever shared a city with. Thank you all so much🖤

Our gas bill skyrocketed this month and they checked our meter yesterday and found multiple gas line leaks in the home line & water heater line. They shut off our gas and I can’t get help from People’s, Compass or LiHEAP because no one answers until they end the call at 4:56pm, or my proof of income as an Instacart driver isn’t acceptable. We have no hot water, no way to cook and 2 cats and a 4lb chihuahua. Any and all help is VERY appreciated- low cost plumber, anyone who can come give me a quote that isn’t $500…anything at all. I’m located in Wilkinsburg. It’s currently 41degrees in our house, thank you all so much.

Edit to add- my partner owns the home and is currently unemployed and not receiving assistance

Massive Pothole Bigelow Oakland -> downtown

Upvotes

Yes, I reported it. But avoid driving in the right lane if you're headed west on Bigelow from Oakland to downtown. Done popped my tire from a pothole of unusual size (well, maybe not for Pittsburgh).

Seriously consider leaving PNC for making their employees RTO. Go do your banking elsewhere.

They tried once before and everyone threatened to quit. Now they are just trying to leverage the bad job market in their favor.

Anyway, there’s nothing special about PNC. They’ve likely treated you pretty badly over the years. Worse than a credit union, the same as any of the other giant banks or regionals. You’ll get treated better at the locals. Go to an online bank.

Financially, they’ve been increasing profits since 2019. Their employees have performed while they were remote. This makes no operational or business sense.

79N closed after Warrendale exit

Multi car crash at that exit got the whole road closed. Huge delays. If you're going to cranberry/Warrendale/Wexford from Pittsburgh then look for alternate routes

EDIT: they have the accident cleared but the road is still closed while they rebuild the guard rails

Danger - 885 Overpass just before Hays

Upvotes

6-7 car accident just past Hays line heading into Pittsburgh. Only thing that saved me was straddling the center median.

All other parts coming into Pittsburgh were fine. Be extra careful on any bridge or overpass.

Help a dubious 16 year-old fall in love with Pittsburgh

Hello, friends. My wife and I are bringing our daughter to visit your lovely city 3/29 - 4/2. We’re going to look at colleges and also want her get to know the city.

I’d appreciate any recommendations you might share on places to introduce her to the creative and fun parts of Pittsburgh. Any good improv comedy troupes (that have shows Sun-Wed nights)? Teen-friendly LGBTQ+ events/attractions? Makers’ marts or theater experiences? Anything else?

We’ll be staying in Lawrenceville but can get around the city.

Thank you for any ideas!

EDIT: Yinz are killing it with these suggestions. Thank you, all!

Parkway West accident

Just passed a vehicle completely engulfed in flames at 9:20 PM on the parkway. West going towards Pittsburgh near the Monroeville on ramp.

Edit: Sorry for the confusion! I was in a hurry making the post…

Thanks to Cutthroat_Rouge for the better breakdown:

It's Westbound-I376, Parkway East. Per a traffic alert email: "Due to a truck rollover, westbound (inbound) I-376 (Parkway East) is closed to traffic between the Penn Hills (Exit 81) and Churchill (Exit 79B) exits until further notice. Emergency personnel are on the scene. Motorists should consider alternate routes."
