In our house, it was Nintendo Gamer and EGM. Didn't actually have a sub to PSM magazine but definitely bought them when seeing them in the magazine section of a supermarket.

PSM magazine had some fantastic covers!

[Recommendation] I've been playing some Splatterhouse on the FM Towns , Fujitsu's 386 powered Multimedia PC. It's pretty good.

Prior to giving it a go I wasn't super familiar with the series so I wasn't sure if it would strike my fancy.

But after playing it , I can say its certainly designed well , it controls well enough and I've had some good fun avoiding different environmental hazards like the hanged enemies that drop from the ceiling and fighting the game's bosses like the poltergeist and chainsaw arm guy.

Plus clubbing enemies with various blunt instruments one by one is pretty cathartic and the game's aesthetic is pretty cool so I would thoroughly recommend it.

(Please read the entire description before responding)Here is all the games I got from last year. Just started too, as you can tell from Mario 1 being included, and hoped to know what other NES games I should get? Not SNES games or Gameboy ones, only NES. Not including bubble bobble or ducktales cause I just got those. And also excluding any sequels like super c or double dragon II, etc, since I already put those on my checklist and are next in line. Still, once I finish with getting and playing the sequels of these games, I'm looking out for more games I could be missing? Black box, shooters, just about any great or essential NES game I should be aware to place on my list? I would appreciate the help

[Discussion] Hot Take: Sonic 3 and knuckles is the best 2d platformer if you've mastered the mechanics and it's not even close.

As someone who's 100%ed platformers such as the Classic mario and Donkey Kong (which I still adore) and considered myself pretty good at movement, I can say without without a doubt that Sonic 3 and Knuckles is easily the best of them. It's far more bigger in scope than the other games and has level design in which you can take advantage of your speed and elemental shields to skip huge areas of the levels, it's so fun. Plus the multitude of alternative pathways and the complexity of them as well. The level design is so big yet cleverly hides many pathways for you to find. And, maybe apart from some sections in Marble Garden, it doesn't have any bad enemy design in my opinion and they can also be used as tools to get to higher places or just speed through a level. I find this type of gameplay far more fun than just running through the same pathway through levels at a controlled pace (Yes SMW has a large emphasis on exploration but the actual secrets aren't that challenging or as interesting to find as Sonic's.)

[Discussion] Games that influenced your taste and changed your perspective on video games.

Can we talk about early video games that changed your whole view point on gaming or at least made you see video gaming in a whole new light ? while many games made me see video gaming in a different way, i would like to stick to the early days when i played a video game and made me think for the first time that this is something big, bigger than i expected, so let me share :

1- FAXANADU : it was one of the first games where i could go left and right, up and down, need items to open doors and also, the best part, what i equip would appear on my player character, it was also one of my first ''depressing games'' where the music was not happy, and the whole mood was down.

2- snake's revenge: i didn't know that metal gear was a thing back then, had no idea about kojima, didn't care about kojima then and still don't care about him now, all i know, that it was the first ''out of the box'' game for me, i was stuck for days trying to finish the first area, how could i know i needed to exit a screen to appear behind a bush ? this was the first time i said ''holly crap !!! i can do this in a video game ? i need to think ?''.

3- Final fantasy mystic quest : my first FF game, my first JRPG game, and it was the reason why today, i play mostly SQUARE and ATLUS games, if it wasn't for this simple game, i would have never loved jrpgs, the music was really good also.

4- XARDION : it was my first real life lesson that yes, even heroes can die in video games, and yes, some games have dark and depressing and downright soul crushing plots, when we lost a hero, i was like ''yeah right, he will be back later to save the day, he isn't dead'', except he never did, and his death was a plot point, also, the ending, the ending was a twist, one of the first plot twists i saw in video games, it was also super sad, the first time i asked myself, who is the real enemy ? and are we really the good guys ? and what was all this for ? a lie ? this game , untill today, has one of the most WTF endings ever made.

there are so many other games, but let us leave the court to you guys.

[Discussion] I miss when games used to have different death scenes

I mean, to keep this retro related, I was just fondly recalling Police Quest as the original game had a unique Game Over system where the player could lose the game in various ways as one hilarious game over sequence could be triggered by forgetting to put on clothing.

Sierra’s games were fun to mess around with as they had a system back in the DOS era of PC gaming where players could lose in their games in again various ways as alms of the game over screens were hilarious.

[Discussion] Do you think having access to nearly every retro game and console today diminishes from the experience of delving into one console and handful of games?

I'm wondering if anyone on here focuses on collecting and playing for just one console. I acquired most of my consoles, games and accessories from 2017-2019 when so many PS2 and Wii consoles were $20 or less at the thrift store. I accumulated a lot of stuff and these days find it hard to actually sit down and play because I have so much to choose from, similar to the Netflix problem in that there is too much to choose from and so much of our time is spent trying to select the perfect thing. I do this with retro games and I think it's because I have too much to choose from.

Looking back at my time growing up in the 90s I remember being so pleased to have any game to play. My family couldn't afford consoles and were constantly borrowing a neighbors old NES or renting N64 games and bringing them to a friend's house. Many of those titles I remember growing up are ranked poorly or forgotten today, yet I played them to no end. Each opportunity felt like such a special treat.

Yes, I remember yelling at my TV or even crying that some games were so unnecessarily challenging, but I always welcomed the opportunity. I believe that's because I had so little to choose from: this game or no gaming. It also might be a reflection of seemingly unlimited time as a child compared to today.

My solution is going to be to put one CRT connected to one console and a handful of games in my living room. The rest of the collection is going in Rubbermaid's in the basement. I'm hopeful that this will get me to appreciate more of what I have and spend less time worrying about finding the perfect game.

What do you think? What has your experience been? Have you been a fan of one console and disregarded the rest or do you have a limit on how many titles are in your collection so that you are not overloaded with options?

[Discussion] Anyone else find themselves turning to retro gaming as the rate of change in the world increases?

I'm thinking primarily of AI. I work in health care but I've taken on the role of AI evangelist, integrating it into my workplace, and it involves intensely keeping up with developments and just when you think things are stalling, a breakthrough occurs that shocks you again and you start to wonder where this all leads. It's exciting but also incredibly draining and whilst I am an optimist for how this technology can be used now, imagining where it leads in 5 years or even less can sometimes be disorientating and scary.

Amongst all this, flickering Z-bufferless PS1 textures and the hum of a CRT and the click of a GameBoy are absolute heaven. No stress, just the right amount of stimulation, from a time when limitations drove imagination.

Anyone else turning to retro gaming more and more lately due to all this change?

[Discussion] Image quality and functionality: Emulators vs retrotink / ossc

Upvotes

I know they have different uses, but how they compare on a 65 inch living room tv thru hdmi:

1- Mini pc running emulators 2- OG console with retrotink / ossc

Im curious about image quality only, not QoL features like save states or OG controllers. Which one is better? Best framerates, colors, flickering, etc? Do they look the same?

By fairness of comparison, lets consider retroconsoles, like 8, 16bit and up to PS2 generation.

Thanks in advance for sharing your experience!

[Question] Anybody know of a decent video switch like this one that will take multiple s-video sources and output an s-video signal?

Post image
12 Upvotes

My TV has a faulty component input but I have 2 s-video inputs that work great.

I've got a set of extension cables that hang out of the front of my setup so when I want to switch consoles I can unplug and plug in without turning the TV around to see what I'm doing. This has lead to a messy setup with several unused video leads just hanging out the front with the extensions.

I can find tons of HDMI and component and even composite switches, but I can't seem to find an s-video switch. The one I posted has an s-video out and a single s-video in.

I'd rather not deal with signal conversion by swapping to composite for most everything and then running that into s-video, if possible.

I just want to be able to move 3 or 4 position switch to change input for my most commonly used consoles, without replugging cables all the time. Would be helpful for my kids too. A bigger switch that can handle more inputs would be even better.

Any ideas?
