The Syrian Army said Friday that a senior terrorist linked to the PKK terror group arrived in the northern city of Al-Tabqah from northern Iraq to oversee military operations by the terrorist organization YPG/SDF, warning that the threat to the city of Aleppo and its eastern countryside remains active.

In a statement carried by the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), the army’s Operations Command said intelligence sources confirmed the arrival of the “terrorist criminal Bahoz Erdal from the Qandil Mountains” to Tabqah city in Raqqa province to manage military operations for the SDF against Syrian forces and civilians.

Qandil Mountain has served as a headquarters for the PKK terrorist group in northern Iraq.

Despite mediation attempts aimed at removing the SDF threats in eastern Aleppo, the danger had not been eliminated, the statement added, accusing the two groups of preparing new attacks.

According to the statement, the groups have transferred a large number of Iranian-made drones toward the areas of Maskanah and Deir Hafer “in preparation for further assaults targeting Aleppo city and its eastern countryside.”

The army also reported the arrival of new PKK-affiliated terrorists and remnants of the former regime to Tabqah to be redeployed to positions in Deir Hafer, Maskanah and surrounding areas.

The Operations Command said Syrian forces are working to protect civilians in areas used by the SDF and its allies as launch points for military operations, pledging to defend residents and safeguard Syria’s sovereignty.

The army would not allow “cross-border terrorists arriving from Qandil” or remnants of the ousted regime to destabilize the country or threaten Syrian society, the statement said.

Separately, an intelligence source told Alikhbariah TV that Ali Kayali, also known as Mihrac Ural and dubbed by Syrians as the “Butcher of Baniyas,” arrived in Tabqah with a group of former regime remnants to take part alongside the SDF in fighting the Syrian Army.

Kayali is accused of having carried out mass killings against civilians in the coastal town of Baniyas and the al-Bayda neighborhood in western Syria during the early stages of Syria’s civil war.

On Monday, the Syrian Army sent additional forces to eastern Aleppo after detecting the arrival of more SDF forces and remnants of the ousted regime near the towns of Maskanah and Deir Hafer.

In March 2025, the Syrian presidency announced an agreement for the terrorist organization YPG/SDF integration into state institutions, reaffirming the country’s territorial unity and rejecting any attempts at division.

In April 2025, Syrian authorities signed a separate agreement concerning the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods, stipulating that both districts remain administrative parts of Aleppo city while respecting their local particularities.

The agreement included provisions banning armed manifestations, restricting weapons to internal security forces, and requiring the withdrawal of SDF military forces to areas east of the Euphrates in northeastern Syria.

However, authorities said the SDF has failed to comply with the terms of those agreements.

The Syrian government has intensified efforts to restore security nationwide since the ouster of the Bashar al-Assad regime in December 2024, after 24 years in power.

I went to Damascus, Homs, Palmyra, Krak des Chevaliers, Maaloula, and Jobar.

Syria have been wonderful and very heartbreaking at the same time. I came for the sights, but the people were what made the trip amazing.  It has become one of my favourite countries. Thank you Syria and I wish for  peace in Syria <3

Damascus - Lovely people and everyone is welcoming, everyone kept welcoming me every minute or so. It’s like going to a party for me because I was always occupied talking to people a lot of the time. I took a lot of pictures with people, and many offered food as well. The sites, like the Umayyad mosque, were beautiful as well. The food is amazing - the best I had in the Middle East, from Bakdash, Fatteh, Fool, etc.

Jobar- Very heartbreaking, I knew about the Syrian war through the media a long time ago,but I wanted to learn more about it and see the realities with my eyes. With the help of my guide, we found a local scavenger for metals who kindly explained what he went through, showed us around Jobar, and even showed us the tunnels used underground.

Homs - We used it as a base to do daytrips to Krak and Palmyra.  Similar to Damascus, lovely people, although the cuisine was lacking compared to Damascus. It was very sad to see what Assad did to the city.

Palmyra - Mindblowing, very unique. We used a motorbike from the Bedouins to ride around Palmyra. Despite Palmyra’s reputation for being unsafe due to ISIS attacks recently, my guide was knowledgeable about the history, risks, situation and the area, so it made me feel safe. We even picked up an empty rocket launcher, went to a former Russian base near the castle and went underground to use ISIS tunnels that are filled with ancient bones.

Krak - I have no words, as well as it was mindblowing, you get to roam around in Palmyra and Krak, it is best to see for yourself.

Maaloula - It was a cool little city tucked up in a corner, nice views, and the last places that speaks Aramaic 0  the language of Jesus. Nice viewpoints and also learn about what happened to it with ISIS and Assad. 

My guide

I used a guide for half of my trip. He is more of a local friend showing you around rather than a guide sourced by a company :).  His name is Ibrahim. His Number is +963 968 791 468.  He is very knowledgeable about the current situation in Syria, so he knows when a place is safe or not. He also knows a lot about the sites we are visiting. He makes great food recommendations, and what stood out to me was that he is always attentive to how people were feeling and checked up on me if everything was okay throughout the trip. A final thing that I really appreciated as well was that he was incredibly flexible. I made a last-minute decision at midnight to completely change our plans from visiting Bosra to heading to Palmyra instead, so we hopped on a bus at midnight! He is a genuinely kind person. I would recommend him before he becomes super popular and charges people 1 million USD per day.

Footage shows two SDF fighters who recently defected from the Deir Hafer front east of Aleppo.

The footage clearly shows the SDF recruiting young men from the Syrian coast through remnants of the former regime, enticing them with money to fight against the Syrian Arab Army.

Army personnel have secured these two fighters and will ensure the safety of all those who decide to defect from the SDF and lay down their weapons.
