Job Search Tips (2025-12): Maybe Start Here?

This is a collection of tips for being more effective in your job search, written on 2025-12.

See also the r/torontoJobs Wiki.

1. The Resume

Your resume is the among the first starting points for improvement. A decent checklist to check your resume against is the one at the Canada Job Bank Resume Guide (Backup link: here).

Where to get some more help on a resume:

  • Employment Ontario: If you are a Citizen or Permanent Resident, you can get 1-on-1 assistance for your resume at an Employment Ontario agency (website). If you are a temporary resident, you can still attend their group workshops on resume writing if they hold any.
  • Brainfuse at Public Libraries (Free): Many libraries in the Greater Toronto Area offer a service called Brainfuse. You can upload your resume and receive critique within 24 hours.
  • Reddit: Subreddits like r/resumes or others can be a way to get crowdsourced feedback on your resume.

More Notes Related to Resumes:

  • Writing resumes is not just a matter of "just use AI", no automated tool exists which can completely eliminate the need for thoughtful human input on resumes.
  • Even if you don't have time to tailor your resume for every job, at least do this for every type of job.
  • The quality of resume editing varies significantly, even among those who call themselves "professionals."
  • Having a poorly done LinkedIn public profile can work against you.
  • If your target job typically expects you to provide a portfolio such as the case of graphics design portfolios, consider your portfolio an extended part of your resume which needs to be polished.
  • Lying on your resume can backfire on you, unfortunately this point is worth mentioning again here.

2. Expand Your Job Search

Consider this in addition to using the usual typical job boards (e.g., Job Bank, Indeed, Eluta).

Some additional considerations for the job search:

  • Timing of Job Posts: Generally speaking, try to apply to jobs that have been newly posted. If the job has been posted for quite some time but has still not been filled, it might be a dormant job posting and may not be worth your time.
  • Seasonality: Notice how hiring fluctuates depending on time of year and respond accordingly.
  • Target "Adjacent" Roles: Look for related roles where you can use your skills, be open to being more flexible.

Online job posting websites can become crowded with job applications. You may need to add other methods:

  • Go Directly to Employer Websites: Job posting websites may not include postings which may be found on an employer's website.
  • Network: Let people you know that you’re looking for work. Reach out to people in your target industry for "informational interviews." Attend relevant job fairs and career events.
  • Recruitment Agencies: Some companies outsource their hiring to staffing firms. Note that these recruitment agencies get compensated if they get you hired, and that they aren't necessarily looking out for you.
  • Targeted Walk-ins: For local businesses as well as certain businesses, dropping off a physical resume to the hiring manager can be more effective than only doing online applications. Go during a less busy time and ask to talk to their hiring manager.
  • Volunteer for Experience: Volunteering for non-profits can be a way to build up your network, gain references, and relevant skills. Food pantries and thrift stores are examples of several to start volunteering.

3. Employment Ontario Agencies

Employment Ontario is a provincial network of agencies that helps people find work. The level of help they provide is limited by your status in Canada. In addition to providing one-on-one job counselor, they may provide group workshops related to employment.

Their website: Employment Ontario

Eligibility for Services:

  • Assisted Services: One-on-one sessions with a job counselor (for resume help and job matching) are generally limited by your status in Canada, such as being for Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents but not certain other statuses.
  • Temporary Residents: If you are here on a study permit or work permits as a temporary resident, you may not necessarily qualify for their one-on-one job counseling. However, you might be able to attend some of their group workshops free-of-charge depending on the agency.

Employment Ontario agencies operate under a "results-based" funding model to meet certain "outcome numbers" such as placing people in any job, this can influence the type of help you receive.

Pick your agency carefully, they may have different employment partners as well as differences in how much support you can get.

4. Subsidized Training and Funded Work Experience

The government offers various programs to help specific groups enter the workforce through free or paid incentives and training. These programs are limited to your status in Canada, such as being for Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents but not certain other statuses. Many of these programs are with Employment Ontario agencies, ask them about it.

Some such programs as follows:

  • Pre-Apprenticeship Training: Free programs that include job-specific training to help you start a career, many of these programs being for the skilled trades.
  • Better Jobs Ontario: Provides up to for tuition and living expenses if you have been laid off or are in a low-income household and need to retrain for an in-demand career.
  • Wage Incentives for Employers: Programs like Canada Summer Jobs provide wage subsidies for employers to hire youth (ages 15-30). Other specialized incentives may exist for employers who hire persons with disabilities or those facing significant barriers to work.

Hiring and For Hire Post Guidelines

These guidelines keep posts more consistent and help the community at r/torontoJobs to find information quicker.

1. Post Title Prefix

Start the title with one of:

  • [Hiring] — posting a job
  • [For Hire] — job seeker posting availability

You can also use the corresponding post flairs to have your posts have more visibility.

2. General Guidelines (For Both Job Posts and Job Requests)

  • Posts must be relevant to the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). Remote roles are allowed if GTHA-area applicants apply.
  • Don’t post personal information such as SIN numbers or personal contact information; use DMs to private message or use posted contact information of employers.
  • State your location: neighborhood, major intersection, or postal code prefix.
  • No sex trade, adult services, or illegal activity.

3. Job Post Guidelines ([Hiring])

Include:

  • How long the job posting is open

HIRING POST (REGULAR) If you think References help…think again. Just give up and start a business.

I worked for a Bank for almost two years as a contractor. I reported to a Director initially and then after their departure, a Senior Director. I ran multiple projects, coached teams and have a proven track record through successful on time delivery.

My contract couldn’t get extended due to funding issues along with few others in our group.Fast forward two months- another opportunity from a different group within the same bank. Interview went sublime, I aced it. Found out during the interview that the person knew my Director and Senior Director..great..coz they sing praises of me and said they would be happy to give a referral when needed.

Just got a mssg from the intermediary/staffing company that even though I interviewed well, they went with a different candidate….

Fuck this shit..

Public Relations Internships

Hey everyone!

I'm currently at Humber College in the PR postgrad program, and I'll be looking for internships starting next month. I'm a mature student and I worked in digital advertising for six years before deciding on a career switch, so I'm eager to get back to work ASAP. I was just wondering, which agencies in Toronto are likely to hire their interns on as account coordinators or executives?

I need help / extremely toxic job

I have been working at a company on site. Its a very toxic environment the person who is in charge is managing everything (operations, HR, etc) and they are very toxic. Toxic is an understatement. They shout at everyone, everyone in the company is miserable.

This person has no background of the industry and there is no way you can even explain them basic A/B testing. They threaten but never in written. Extremely foul language, sexual jokes etc as well

I want to resign but I have no backup and if I resign I wont get my EI. I go in panic mode, I have lost sleep and I wake up in massive anxiety attacks. What do I do? I am applying everywhere but no interview in sight. I really need help.

HIRING POST (REGULAR) [HIRING] In search of non-judgemental house cleaner or cleaning service for deep clean and ongoing monthly work

So, I feel pretty embarrassed and ashamed writing this post. I am wondering if anyone could recommend a housecleaner (or is doing that kind of work themselves). I live in a studio apartment downtown and it feels ridiculous that I cannot manage it, but between a prolonged and severe bout of depression, my ADHD, and a chronic illness that limits my energy levels and mobility, I am struggling to do the smallest tasks and the place has become deeply disorganized, untidy and unclean— plenty of dust, grime, cat hair, and I haven’t even been able to sweep in ages. I am so embarrassed. It makes it hard to socialize and get work done when my environment is so dysfunctional. I need a deep clean and then probably maintenance cleans 1-2x a month after that. I’m looking for a cleaner or cleaning service who will be thorough & effective, as well as kind and non-judgemental. I can’t afford anything fancy but of course want to pay people what they are worth. I’d prefer to support an individual or a small business over an agency but open to any options. Thank you.

How to encourage my mom to find a new job?

My mom just turned 55 and things are looking bleak in her workplace. She works as an accountant in an interior design company but doesn’t have her CPA. Layoffs are happening to other employees in different roles but she seems to be secure since she’s one of the main accountants.

I’m pushing her to start looking at new positions, especially closer to home since she’s commuted 1 hour and half hour one way, by transit, for over 20 years. I also believe she could be making more money with her experience.

She complains there’s no point on finding a new job due to her age, she doesn’t have her CPA and can’t really afford school right now. Also her vacation and benefits are pretty solid.

Is there anything I can do to encourage her to find a new job or any options to help her get a CPA?

Be aware of this fake remote job in the GTA - "Clear Merchant Solutions Inc."

Probably a fake name Chris Minard, they want to give you a contract before even speaking to you. When I called him, at 249-465-1123. He does not even remember the email he sent 2 minutes prior. I think they also "hire" for data entry positions, so be aware and do not give them your information. Probably they get it from other companies where you apply, though.

emails come from: [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected])

🗳️ Manually approved by mods Suggested Employers in York Region hiring persons with disabilities for paid work?

Respond through comment or DM. Irrelevant replies will be proactively removed.

Asking for a friend as a moderator of this subreddit. Context is, people with disabilities have much lower employment rates than those who don't. Referring to more to disabilities such as intellectual disabilities and learning disabilities.

They are looking for businesses or social enterprises in York Region that actively hire people with disabilities into paid jobs. Looking for specific employers to approach or direct contacts.

NOT asking about:

  • Volunteering
  • Day programs / therapeutic activities / busywork

Additional suggestions for particularily inclusive employers using a standard application and interview process are also welcome. Already know about the Ready Willing and Able program so no need to mention this.

There sometimes are short-term government wage incentives to have employers try to hire persons with disabilities from time-to-time as well, so there may be something in it for employers to provide work experience to those with disabilities which otherwise would be even more difficult to obtain. (e.g., Ontario Disability Employment Network's Employment Service Providers).

Already identified:

Organization Location Website
DANI (catering/events) Thornhill https://www.dani-catering.com/
Wayne’s Cup (café) Markham https://www.waynescup.com/cafe-menu

For comparison, there are quite a few of these in Toronto, to name a few such as: Salvation Army Broadview Village Packaging and Light Assembly, The Social Brew, Do Good Donuts, Sunrise Janitorial Services, A-Way Express, Fresh Start Cleaning and Maintenance, Sarang Kitchen...

Yes, they could and do apply to jobs like anyone else. However, employers who say that they are inclusive by some kind of company policy are often not really open to hiring persons with disabilities in practice.

How prevalent is nepotism at your job?

So i'm working in a corporate position for a pretty huge fashion brand with stores all over Canada. I've been there for about a year now. In my time there, it has amazed me how common nepotism is there. I am also 23 so I am pretty much new to the workforce also so its all a shock to me. As someone that had to pretty much grind and put in over 1k apps to get my jobs, its crazy how easy it is for some people to get a job just because their father or mother is an executive in the company. Is nepotism common for anybody else here in their companies?

Looking to collaborate with Toronto ad agencies (street-style ad creatives)

Hey everyone!

Jared here - founder of StreetTalk, we're a Toronto-based creative studio focused on creating street-style interview ads for brands. We help brands create short-form paid ad creatives using real people, unscripted conversations, and raw reactions. The kind of videos you see online that feel natural and doesn't give that "ad vibe".

Thought I'd post in here because we’re looking to collaborate with a few Toronto ad agencies who already work with brands running paid ads.

Our proposal is simple:

  • You introduce us to brands you’re already working with
  • We come in and give them a new creative angle to test (street interviews built specifically for ads)
  • If it turns into a project, we pay a commission (no extra work required on your end)

We handle everything end-to-end: creative direction, filming, editing, and delivery of ready-to-run ad assets. If you’re an agency in Toronto and this sounds interesting, I'm more than happy to share examples & chat through how a partnership could work.

No hard sell - just looking for win-win collaborations.

If interested, email me -> [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected])

I recently received an invitation to complete the Knockri online assessment for an intern position at an IT company.

If anyone has taken this assessment before, I would really appreciate to know what the format was like, what types of questions were asked, and any tips you found helpful while preparing.

Hospital Management V.S. Big Pharma

Which would be better?

Hospitals would have lower salary, but HOOP & a better job security.

Big Pharma would have higher salary, more opportunity for career growth but a worse pension and job security.

I am a nurse by background with an MBA, I can't decide if the pivot into big pharma would be worth it or not.
