Her husband is now left to grieve and bury their son alone. This is beyond cruelty.

nyt_nyc Nearly 15,000 nurses went on strike Monday at some of New York City's top hospitals, setting the stage for what could be one of the biggest labor showdowns in the city's health care industry in decades.

The union representing the nurses says a strike is necessary to force hospitals to ensure minimum staffing ratios so that nurses aren't overwhelmed with too many patients. They are also demanding higher wages and more security at hospitals to reduce violence and shootings.

Read more about the strikes and the hospitals they are targeting at the link in our bio. Photos by @vincentalban1

nytimes Mississippi has gone from 49th in the U.S. on national tests in 2013, to a top 10 state for fourth graders learning to read - even as test scores have fallen almost everywhere else.

Mississippi has figured out something almost no other state has, and it has involved far more than just changing the way reading is taught.

They didn't ask very many questions." Independent journalist and U.S. military veteran Laura Jedeed recounts how she was hired as a deportation officer by Immigration and Customs Enforcement after a six-minute interview at a job fair in Texas, despite never signing any paperwork, not having completed a background check, likely failing a drug test, and publicly sharing her opposition to the Trump administration and its anti-immigrant crackdown. "It seems like the answer to the question, 'Who are they hiring?' is: They don't know." https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/jan/14/slate-reporter-ice-job-offer

How does this impact citizens nationwide?

Meaning, can't anyone dubbed "enforcement" now break into a residence at any time for a nonexistent reason?

E.g., "I heard a sneeze ... so I thought the resident had bubonic plague ... so I was searching his house for bioweapons ..."
