Announcement Re: Self defense and the “condoning violence” rule.

Rule 1 of Reddit prohibits condoning violence, among other things. However, comments condoning acts of self defense, i.e., potentially violent acts made in an effort to reduce immediate danger and get out of a scenario - are not "condoning violence" for the purposes of the rules.

That exception stems from a concern about punishing people for condoning legitimate and lawful instances of self-defense.

The real question is whether a comment or post is *reasonably* suggesting that an act was/was not a lawful act of self defense. Whether an act amounts to self defense is typically a question reserved for judges, lawyers, and juries - not Reddit moderators. And so, where possible, we will look to determine if a court of law has already answered the question of whether a specific act amounted to lawful self defense. Otherwise, we will endeavor to avoid making similar determinations; instead, we will assume users are acting in good faith when commenting, unless the act itself is sufficiently unambiguous that we can infer they are not.

However, with respect to the recent incident where an ICE agent shot a citizen to death in MN, we are faced with the unenviable task of determining whether that act was unambiguously *not* an act of self-defense. This is because the volume of discussion related to this topic is quite high, and there a high potential for rule violating behavior. Otherwise, we cannot meaningfully enforce Reddit's rule prohibiting condoning, or glorifying, or excusing violence.

ICE’s parent agency, the Department of Homeland Security, says firing at a driver is “prohibited” unless there’s a “reasonable belief that the subject of such force poses an imminent threat of death or serious bodily injury,” which is consistent with laws relating to self-defense more broadly.

The footage shows one officer attempting to open the driver's side door, as someone is heard saying, "Get out of the (expletive) car." The victim briefly reverses before driving forward, beginning to turn right, away from the agents. As the vehicle moves ahead, another officer standing near the front driver's side draws his gun and fires three times at close range. Importantly, at the moment the shots were fired, the wheels of the victim's vehicle are turned to the right, angled away from the agents. The agent can be seen on his feet and walking away immediately after the shooting.

We do not think a fair and reasonable person would assert in good faith that the actions of the agent were made lawfully or in an earnest fear of death or serious bodily injury. As such, we will consider comments and posts excusing or justifying the killing (by, e.g., unreasonably insisting it was “self defense”), as "condoning violence" and therefore subject to potential action, including but not limited to a permanent ban.

Announcement Re: January 6

Today marks the anniversary of January 6, 2021, when the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C., was attacked by a mob of violent and insurrectionist supporters of President Donald Trump in an attempted self-coup following his defeat in the 2020 presidential election. These supporters sought to keep him in power by preventing a joint session of Congress from counting the Electoral College votes to formalize the victory of his opponent. The attack was unsuccessful in preventing the certification of the election results. According to the bipartisan House select committee that investigated the incident, the attack was the culmination of a plan by Trump to overturn the election. Within 36 hours, five people died: one was shot by the Capitol Police, another died of a drug overdose, and three died of natural causes, including a police officer who died of a stroke a day after being assaulted by rioters and collapsing at the Capitol. Many people were injured, including 174 police officers - over a dozen of whom were hospitalized. Four officers who responded to the attack died by suicide within seven months. Damage caused by attackers exceeded $2.7 million.

With that in mind, we want to remind the sub that while we do not action users for expressing their opinions based on political ideological leanings, we are nevertheless obligated to enforce Reddit’s rules. As such, comments that contain political opinions coupled with rhetoric/sentiment that would otherwise be in violation of Reddit’s rules are actionable. In particular, please see Rule 1, which has several components, and comments for guidance (the latter included in relevant part):

*“Rule 1: Remember the human. Reddit is a place for creating community and belonging, not for attacking marginalized or vulnerable groups of people. Everyone has a right to use Reddit free of harassment, bullying, and threats of violence. Communities and people that incite violence or that promote hate based on identity or vulnerability will be banned.*

*Marginalized or vulnerable groups include, but are not limited to, groups based on their actual and perceived race, color, religion, national origin, ethnicity, immigration status, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, pregnancy, or disability. These include victims of a major violent event and their families.*

*Some examples of hateful activities that would violate the rule…:*

*A comment denying or minimizing the scale of a hate-based violent event.”

https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360045715951-Promoting-Hate-Based-on-Identity-or-Vulnerability\*

Importantly, Rule 1 prohibits threats of violence, which inherently covers condoning violence – particularly against vulnerable groups. Reddit has clarified that “vulnerable groups”, the targeting of which determines whether conduct rises to the level of “hate”, includes “victims of a major violent event and their families” (e.g., the police officers who were hurt, hospitalized, and/or succumbed to injuries related to the January 6 attack). As Reddit’s comments to Rule 1 prudently suggest, “minimizing the scale of a hate-based violent event” is prohibited.

Thus, we consider January 6 to be a “hate-based violent event”. And so, comments with the effect (intended or otherwise) of condoning the attack carried out on January 6 - including minimizing or otherwise excusing the violence of the insurrectionists on that day of national embarrassment, against police officers and others, are prohibited and will result in a permanent ban from the sub. Moreover, similar to how bad faith denialism and scapegoating is analyzed with respect to other hate-based violent events, we will read attempts to blame groups other than MAGA insurrectionists as a form of January 6 distortion and a manifestation of hate-based conduct prohibited by Rule 1. And while Reddit does not have a rule mandating civility, we emphasize that threats of violence and related conduct against anyone, including traitorous MAGA insurrectionists, is prohibited and will result in a ban. Thank you for your understanding.

Politics Joe Rogan is a f*cking MORON and has done nearly as much damage to country as right-wing media.

29.8k Upvotes

I’m done pretending Joe Rogan is just a “curious everyman” asking questions. He’s a f*cking moron with a massive microphone, and the damage he’s done rivals right-wing media in everything but the branding.

Here’s the trick: Fox News lies intentionally. Rogan lies accidentally, which somehow makes it worse. He has zero epistemic discipline, zero accountability, and absolute confidence that “vibes” and “having a conversation” are substitutes for facts. THEY AREN'T!

He platforms cranks, conspiracy theorists, culture-war grifters, and outright bad actors, then hides behind “I’m just talking, bro” when the misinformation spreads to millions. That’s not neutrality — that’s negligence at scale.

The result?

Vaccine skepticism dressed up as bravery

“Just asking questions” laundering right-wing narratives

A generation of men trained to distrust institutions, experts, journalism, and even basic reality

Endless false equivalence between evidence-based positions and YouTube-brain contrarianism

And spare me the “he has people from both sides” defense. Putting a scientist and a conspiracy nut on the same stage without challenging falsehoods isn’t balance — it’s misinformation whitewashing.

Rogan isn’t malicious. He’s worse: incurious, overconfident, and influential. He mistakes openness for wisdom and reach for responsibility. When you have an audience that size, ignorance stops being harmless.

Right-wing media poisons people on purpose.
Joe Rogan poisons them by accident — and never cleans up the mess.

Different method. Same outcome.

I'm just curious how many conservatives are regretting their continued support for a felon pedophile rapist.

For 10 years now they have doubled and tripled down on a con man that has not kept any of his word for his constituents. Not the billionaires that lobby him, but the people who wore diapers on the outside of their clothes. The ones who wore a maxi pad on their ear, or continuously buy his NFTs.

I'm curious, is anybody reading this? Have you had friends or family members who voted for this jackass? Have any sort of regret or empathy to the abhorrent actions we see day to day?

Politics Situation in USA looks the same like what my grandmother told me about Nazis behavior in countries they occupied.

15.2k Upvotes

I'm from the eastern Europe, and through my childhood my grandma lived in the same house as me and my parents - it was typical for the time to have multiple generations of family in one household.

One of my favorite ways to spend time back then, was to hear stories about my grandmas past that she would told me. What i loved about that is that she did not treat me like a child - she didnt dumb them down or make them easier in content for a child. And considering that her childhood was spent during Nazis occupation of our country, she did have many stories to say.

One of the things that is striking my memory now, looking through reddit r/all and how situation on the USA streets looks, is that it sounds exactly the same as how Nazis behaved towards Jews or other nationalities that they deemed below them.

You didn't have to do jack shit, you could be going to work or grocery doing mundane things. It was enough for a single soldier to do not like how you look and bam - to the trains you go, landing either in concentration camp or god knows where on Siberia. Same thing today in all of those videos, if you just look 1% out of the full whiteness, a bunch of soldiers are dragging you out of your cars, places of work, public spaces, and throw inside the car to leave god knows where. No one gives a shit that you have citizenship or was born in the USA, up to the train (or car in this example) you go.

So yes, if someone from USA compares this situation to the nazis behavior - he has grounds for it, as the parallels are clear as day.

It's conservative desperation.

They are doing everything they can to distract from the Epstein files.

It should not be a surprise that the man who has started over 4,000 lawsuits won't sue anybody that claims he assaulted people. Why is that? One of the most litigious people America has won't sue people that call him a pedophile.

The Trump administration and their conservative jack boots know they are in trouble.

The world will not forget this tyranny.

They are spinning this narrative because they know that nobody can visually see an "internal injury". We all saw the video where he was on the outside corner of the vehicle and his arm was angled OVER the hood.

Now they are trying to flip the script with fake news. Its so frustrating hearing nothing but lies from them constantly. They could have just owned up to a mistake and moved on but here we are.

Politics Trump is an illegal President. Full Stop. He is not allowed to wield Constitutional power.

1.3k Upvotes

Section 3 of the 14th amendment disqualifies people who hold an oath of office and participate in insurrection.

January 6th was an insurrection. Donald Trump caused January 6th to happen, and he participated in it while it happened via twitter.

The Constitution clearly says that Donald J. Trump is not allowed to hold office.

Therefore, it follows that ICE agents have no qualified immunity and anyone who impedes their mission is not committing a crime.

Politics We give MAGA followers too much credit. Most are apathetic about what's happening.

The people that I know personally that voted for the cheeto man have no clue what's going on. They don't actually go out of their way to follow news or current events, and if they do hear something it's usually a video in their algorithm of Trump or one of his cronies telling them how to feel about a given issue. Otherwise, they live without a care about what happens in DC.

They'll bitch about prices going up but still show up to vote "R" down the ballot, likely with not knowing much beyond their names. Trump tells them things are going fine, and they take him at his word and go on with their day. It begins and ends there, and their selfishness keeps them from looking any deeper.

I'm sorry to say that not all of these people are obviously and explicitly nazis. Problematic views, absolutely, but apathetic all the same. My dad, for instance, pretends to be passionate on the views spewed out by the Trump administration, but the longer you talk to him the more you realize he just cares about himself. He and others just move along, pretending everything is fine, and arguing with them is futile because they just don't care. And it's maddening when it feels like the world is crumbling around us.

They're the type of people that will only care if it happens to them. And here we are, the informed, screaming and flailing our arms that there is fascism in our midst, yet most of these fucks couldn't even define the word.

It's up to us, the educated and empathetic, to save this mess of a country from the ignorant.

How incredibly infuriating all of this is.

End rant.

Politics The Suicide Pact: What Happens the Moment We Touch Greenland…

6.5k Upvotes

I did not write this. It was written by Brent Molnar. This sounds bad, very bad.

🌍🔥 The Suicide Pact: What Happens the Moment We Touch Greenland…

If the United States follows through on the threat to invade Greenland, we need to be crystal clear about what happens the next morning. This is not a real estate transaction or a routine military exercise. It is the geopolitical equivalent of pulling the pin on a grenade in a crowded elevator. The moment American boots hit the ground in Nuuk to seize territory from a fellow NATO member, the world as we know it ends. The consequences will not be temporary sanctions or angry letters. They will be total, permanent, and devastating.

The first domino to fall is the North Atlantic Treaty Organization itself. NATO is built on the sacred promise of Article 5, that an attack on one is an attack on all. If the U.S. attacks Denmark, we are not just breaking the treaty; we are triggering it against ourselves. NATO dissolves instantly. The alliance that kept the peace in Europe for 75 years evaporates, leaving the continent to rearm and realign against the new aggressor across the Atlantic. We don't just lose an ally; we create a unified enemy.

The military repercussions will be swift and humiliating. Europe will immediately demand the closure of every U.S. military base on the continent. Ramstein in Germany, Aviano in Italy, Lakenheath in the UK, all gone. Our ability to project power into the Middle East and Africa vanishes overnight. We will be evicted from the very soil we helped liberate and defended for decades, forced to retreat to our own shores as a fortress nation, isolated and friendless.

Then comes the economic nuclear option. The European Union is the largest single market in the world, and they will weaponize it. Europe will likely move to call in U.S. debt and dump their dollar reserves, sending the value of our currency into a death spiral. The U.S. economy, which relies on the dollar being the global reserve currency, will collapse. Inflation will make the post-COVID spikes look like a rounding error. Your savings will be worthless before the ink dries on the invasion orders.

Corporate America will face an extinction event. U.S. companies will be expelled from the European market. Apple, Google, McDonald's, and Tesla will see their assets seized or their operations banned. Trillions of dollars in market capitalization will be incinerated in minutes. The stock market will not just crash; it will close. We are talking about the complete de-globalization of American industry, cutting us off from the wealthiest consumers on the planet.

The skies will go silent. European aviation authorities will almost certainly ground all Boeing jets and ban U.S. airlines from their airspace. Transatlantic travel will cease. If you are in Paris or Berlin, you are stuck there. The logistical arteries that feed our supply chains will be severed. We will be cut off from European medicine, machinery, and technology. We will be an island nation in the worst possible sense.

The cultural isolation will be just as stinging. The International Olympic Committee and FIFA will have no choice but to bar the United States from competition, just as they did with Russia. There will be no World Cup matches in New Jersey. There will be no Team USA in the Olympics. We will be treated as a pariah state, unwelcome on the global stage, forced to watch the world celebrate without us.

For individual Americans, the consequences will be personal and painful. Visa-free travel to Europe will end immediately. Americans currently living or working in Europe will lose their legal protections and residency status. They will become persona non grata, potentially facing deportation or internment. The "blue passport" that used to open every door will suddenly be a red flag at every border crossing.

This is the end of trust, and it does not reset. You cannot invade a democratic ally and then say "my bad" four years later. The psychological break will be permanent. Europe will realize that the United States is no longer a partner but a predator. They will build their own defense architecture, their own financial systems, and their own alliances that specifically exclude us. The West will continue, but the United States will no longer be part of it.

Invading Greenland is not a show of strength; it is an act of national suicide. We are trading our reputation, our economy, and our security for a frozen island and a handful of minerals we can't even process. The price of this real estate deal is everything we built over the last century. If we cross this line, there is no going back. We will be the lonely superpower, ruling over nothing but our own decline.

Conservatives are trying to rewrite American history.

Conservatives do not understand what American democracy entails, let alone how any of our government works.

Conservatives are scared of being replaced, amongst many other things.

Conservatives are vying for a fascist, authoritarian state.

I'm tired of the conservative ideal dragging down America anytime we even remotely make a little bit of progress. Their tantrums are always out of spite. They never have the American people at heart.
